Development continues on a live action, supernatural crime TV series, based on the feature "Maniac Cop" (1988), to be produced and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and John Hyams, for HBO in North America and Canal+ in France:
The first "Maniac Cop" feature, directed by William Lustig, starred Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Robert Z'Dar, and Sheree North, following an ex-police officer, who returns from the dead, seeking revenge on criminals, corrupt politicians and co-workers who wronged him.
"Maniac Cop" was followed by the feature sequels, "Maniac Cop 2" (1990) and "Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence".
"We've been talking about a re-imagining of the 'Maniac Cop' films for a number of years," said Refn, "but as we continued to work on the material, we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth.

One lesser known but extremely cool horror series that’s worth revisiting is the Maniac Cop franchise. Directed by William Lustig and scripted by Larry Cohen, the Maniac Cop trilogy got off to a great start in 1988 with a film that stars Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Laurene Landon, and Evil Dead franchise hero Bruce Campbell, with Robert Z’Dar as the title character. Although Campbell emerges as the hero in the first film, he’s killed off early in 1990’s Maniac Cop 2 – which, despite losing Campbell so quickly, still manages to be one of the best horror sequels out there. Things don’t get questionable until 1993’s troubled Maniac Cop 3. But even though the first two movies are awesome, Campbell doesn’t seem to have the fondest memories of them, as he revealed during a recent interview with Variety.

Classic campy horror film franchise Maniac Cop is getting a remake series at HBO with Nicolas Winding Refn in the driver’s seat.
Maniac Cop, the 1988-1993 slasher film franchise, has been eyed for a remake treatment of some kind for several years, with its last attempt, a feature film, having come to a screeching halt a few years back. However, like the films' homicidal zombified flatfoot himself, the remake endeavor has been reanimated, this time in the form of a television project at HBO!
In a fascinating resurrection and repurposing of the formerly-mooted remake film project, Nicolas Winding Refn will head a Maniac Cop remake event television series for HBO, reports Variety. Refn steps in a showrunner, and will also direct the entirety of the series alongside John Hyams, essentially reviving the would-be lineup for the 2016 remake movie attempt. Refn brings a CV of sullen thrillers...

It looks like the cameras may finally start rolling on the remake of William Lustig's 1988 horror crime flick, Maniac Cop, as director John Hyams is pencilling in a spring shoot for the new take.
According to Variety, Hyams plans to film the Maniac Cop remake in New York City from a script by Ed Brubaker (Angel of Death).
On board as a producer, Lustig is involved with the remake, along with Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon), who is also producing. Here's what Hyams told Variety about the remake's script:
"The script is able to re-invent the original with the same mythology. We had thought about shooting in the fall, but we decided on the spring to give ourselves enough time to get the best cast and crew."

Black Friday just became Blue Friday thanks to Blue Underground’s Blu-ray releases of Maniac Cop 2 & 3. I asked Matt Fini to join me for what I intended to be a 20-minute audio review covering the two special editions; 64 minutes later we had the makings of a Foycast.
Be warned: It begins with me rapping.
Anyone who has read my writings or listened to Dinner for Fiends or the Foycast over the years should already be well aware of my love for Maniac Cop 2. Love of this magnitude cannot be adequately conveyed with mere words on the printed paper or scrolling text on a computer screen. That’s why I asked fellow Maniac Cop fan Matt Fini to join me to record a short audio review that quickly exploded into an hour-long Foycast. I was a fool to think we could cover the awesomeness that is Maniac Cop 2...

“The Vivien Leigh Anniversary Collection”
Another Wtw, another Cohen Media Group release. Seriously, the good folks at Cohen have been doing an amazing job of finding relatively obscure classics and recent foreign films and polishing them like they’re beloved worldwide. They’re rivaling Criterion and Scream Factory as studios for which every release truly matters. Their latest is a collection of four early films from the legendary Vivien Leigh, an actress best-known for “Gone with the Wind” and a true Hollywood icon.

According to DVD Active, Blue Underground will be releasing Maniac Cop 2, Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence and Snuff on Blu-Ray. Blue Underground has been quiet on the Blu-Ray front for far too long so I’m happy that they have come out of hiding.
Snuff has a street date of October 22nd while Maniac Cop 2 and Maniac Cop 3 still haven’t been officially announced with a street date. I can tell you that it will be November or December more than likely. For fans of Maniac Cop 2, keep your ears peeled as I know this won’t be the only news related to the film you will hear this year.

The Maniac Cop will soon be back in blue again - on Blu-ray by way of Blue Underground, that is. Maniac Cop 2 and Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence are coming via the company run by the director of the franchise, William Lustig, so you know he’ll do them justice.
Blue Underground will release both the criminally underrated Maniac Cop 2 and the nearly criminally sabotaged Maniac Cop 3 as Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo packs later this year. In the case of Part 3, this is its first appearance on DVD as well as Blu-ray.
An official release date, technical specs, and supplemental features will be announced shortly. I think we can pretty much count on commentary tracks by writer Larry Cohen and director William Lustig. Such a commentary for Maniac Cop 3 would be quite interesting considering its troubled history.

This is the Pure Movies review for A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), directed by Samuel Bayer and starring Jackie Earle Haley, Katie Cassidy, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz and Clancy Brown. It refers to both the literal, fatal nightmares experienced by the characters in the film, and the figurative nightmare of having to sit through this embarrassingly boring work of rubbish. Fan-chat prior to the release of the movie took the quality of the plot and back-story for given. Fans’ fears were focused around the casting of horror new-comer Jackie Earl Hayley (Shutter Island, Watchmen, Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence) as one of the ripper genre’s most famous faces; Freddy Krueger. Would Haley be able to bring suitable manic creepiness to the undead slasher made famous over a string of films by Robert Englund? Would he manage the delivery of Krueger’s bizarre, mocking dialogue?...

Good news for ex-child star Haley
"Jubilation. Pure unbelievable joy. This is a day of all days," said Jackie Earle Haley, best supporting actor nominee for "Little Children". The actor, who lives in San Antonio with his wife, said he was an emotional daze after getting a nom for his first work in 13 years; his previous movie was "Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence".
Haley was the child star of 1976's "The Bad News Bears" and appeared in 1979's "Breaking Away" and 1983's "Losin' It", but he found the transition to adult roles difficult. He spent the past several years working in Alamo City as a limo driver, security guard and pizza deliverer. Haley was lured back by director and screenwriter Steve Zaillian for "All the King's Men", which is where he first worked with fellow "Children" nominee Kate Winslet.
"I knew him from 'All the King's Men, ' and when ('Children' writer-director) Todd Field) said, 'What do you think of Jackie Earle Haley for Ronnie?, I said, 'Oh my God, fly him in, '" Winslet recalled.
