The full version of the song 'Toxic Love' has obvious and very disturbing sexual implications in the lyrics - it was basically the character Hexxus (Tim Curry) singing to himself about how he has a pollution fetish and how he gets off on wrecking the environment. The lyrics also had the phrase "a special kind of horny". To make the song more appropriate for children, they greatly toned down the innuendo in the original lyrics to something less perverse. The original song can still be found on video sites like YouTube, and it was released on vinyl in an album. The toned-down version of the song is more mainstream.
Rap artists like M.C. Hammer were very popular at the time and rap music was used in the soundtrack of Ferngully to follow what was trendy at the time. It wasn't the only one; films like The Addams Family (1991) and Uncle Buck (1989) also "jumped on the bandwagon).
