After Sam Raimi’s darkly playful 2009 fright fest “Drag Me to Hell” came out, star Alison Lohman said she faced a question. “It was kind of like: Do you want to be a household name?” she remembers in a recent phone call.
She didn’t. “I don’t think I really really wanted that, to be in the public eye,” she said.
If you had told film fans in the 2000s that Lohman would have essentially vanished from the big screen in 2024, they might have a hard time believing you. The decade offered Lohman an incredible run, starting with her breakout role in 2002’s “White Oleander,” Peter Kominsky’s melodrama, where she played the daughter of Michelle Pfeiffer. She played the love of Ewan McGregor’s life in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,...

The movie, about a figure skater and a hockey player who team up to achieve an Olympic dream, featured D. B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly as the pair who build both a working and romantic relationship over time. As Sweeney told us when the film was released, the skating in the film was real, and it was a real challenge for him to learn, especially the figure skating. (Click on the media bar below to hear D. Dexter Romweber, the musician who founded the pioneering guitar-and-drums duo Flat Duo Jets, later inspiring the likes of The White Stripes and countless other lo-fi acts, has died. He was 57 years old.
Romweber’s death was announced via a statement posted by his family on Facebook, which revealed that had died at home on Friday, February 16th, and though “a medical exam is pending,” it is “believed he died of natural causes.”
Born on June 18th, 1966, in Indiana, Romweber got involved in music at an early age, forming his first band when he was 10. By the time he was attending high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the ‘70s, he began performing with drummer Chris “Crow” Smith. In 1983, the two formed Flat Duo Jets, a rip-roaring psychobilly duo that harnessed the electrifying interplay of Romweber’s guitar playing and stage prowess with Smith’s thunderous drumming.

Over the past 32 years, Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series has proved that the singer’s studio albums represent just a tiny fraction of his musical output. Some of the releases in the series spotlight key concerts from tours like his 1966 European run with the Hawks or the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, but most of them focus on albums — both loved and unloved — to let listeners in on Dylan’s creative process and show just how much stunning material he discards along the way.

It might sound crazy now since it’s such a huge hit, but “Ted Lasso” did not have the easiest of times finding a home. The Apple TV+ comedy is based on a character Jason Sudeikis created with Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, and played in a series of Premier League promos for NBC Sports in 2013, but the Ted Lasso of yesteryear is very different from the Ted Lasso fans know and love today.

People always want to know how Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, the longtime collaborators responsible for hit indie films like the Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine, divvy up the work on the set. “I always feel like this is a very unsatisfying answer,” Faris begins, “but we do really trade off roles all the time.

The Summer Olympics are just a test of who can run fastest, jump highest, score the most goals. There’s real danger in the winter games! Try skiing down a mountain at high speeds, taking a sled through an icy slide, jumping as far as you can and not breaking your legs on a massive ski jump or not breaking your neck by falling on the ice. The streaming service is adding a ton of genre movies to its selection this month, including supernatural superhero flicks, time traveling psychological thrillers and renowned occult classics.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. This year’s much-maligned Hellboy reboot is headed directly to Amazon Prime, less than three months after it unceremoniously left theaters. A variety of silver-screen favorites and Amazon Originals are also streaming well before the end of the month. Learn some history by watching “Peterloo,” which portrays the 1819 Peterloo Massacre in England after British forces charge through a peaceful pro-democracy rally, or catch the premiere of “The Boys,” which follows five vigilantes on a heroic quest to combat super-heroes using their powers for evil.

The 14-disc companion set to Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story just arrived in stores, but Dylan’s team is already looking ahead to their next archival project. “We’re thinking about possibly doing Bob’s work in Nashville from John Wesley Harding through the Johnny Cash sessions as the next Bootleg Series,” says a source close to the Bob Dylan camp. “The outtakes from that period have never been heard.”

One of literature’s most famous crime-solvers is coming to the small screen.
NBC has handed a pilot order to Lincoln, a drama based on Jeffery Deaver’s series of Lincoln Rhyme crime novels, TVLine has learned.
Originally titled The Bone Collector (which is also the first book in Deaver’s collection), Lincoln centers on legendary forensic criminologist Lincoln Rhyme, who was seriously injured during his hunt for a diabolical serial killer. Called back into action when the Bone Collector re-emerges, Lincoln forms a unique partnership with Amelia Sachs, a young beat cop who helps him hunt the deadly mastermind...

Washington — Tony Gilroy, the screenwriter of the new political thriller “Beirut,” says that he originally completed the script in the early 1990s, thinking that production company Interscope would give it a green light.
Instead, “it just disappears and goes in a bin,” Gilroy tells Variety‘s “PopPolitics” on SiriusXM, before the company, searching for material that it already owned, finally revived it two decades later with Brad Anderson directing.
Jon Hamm plays Mason Skiles, a diplomat in 1972 Beirut, then a thriving, cosmopolitan center of the Middle East, whose life is upended when a group of terrorists kills his wife. Ten years later, having switched careers, he reluctantly returns to the city, torn apart by civil war. The CIA convinces him to help negotiate the release of one their agents, one of his former colleagues, who the Reagan administration fears will give up intelligence secrets.

There’s nothing quite like the drama (and, on occasion, trauma) of Olympic-level sports to rally even the most relaxed of audience members. When this year’s Winter Olympics — the 23rd in the contemporary iteration of the event — stages its opening ceremony this Friday in Pyeongchang, South Korea, it will herald in over two weeks of the very best that the athletic world has to offer. Even better: it’s all real.
But for those interested in cinematic renditions of stories of grit, determination, and often a metric ton of sequins, the movie world has provided a few choice picks. From the drama of such classics as “Downhill Racer” to the joy of “Cool Runnings” and the wacky happenstance of “I, Tonya,” check out eight solid gold picks for some Olympics-centric binge-watching below (if you can find the time during watching the actual events unfold in the coming weeks).

The Golden Globe-winning comedy series “Mozart in the Jungle” returns to Amazon for season 4 beginning on Feb. 16. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Rodrigo, the roguish conductor of the New York Symphony. In season 3, he and his troupe travelled to Venice, Italy to stage a new opera, “La Fiamma.” He clashed with Malena (Monica Bellucci), the diva at the head of the cast. Expect more fireworks this season as he back behind the podium in Gotham.
And the second half of season 1 of the rebooted live-action version of “The Tick” is set to stream on Feb. 23. Peter Serafinowicz plays the sassy superhero who says, “murder is just not cool.” The show is created by Ben Edlund, who introduced the character in comic book form in 1986. His comic was adapted into an Emmy nominated animated series that ran from 1994-1997 and a short-lived live-action version in 2001 that starred Patrick Warburton.

Emmy winners Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) and Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”) head up the new Hulu original series “The Looming Tower,” which chronicles the rise of Osama Bin-Laden. Also featured in this docudrama about the inter-agency rivalry between the CIA and FBI in the first part of this century are Golden Globe nominees Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg. The first of the 10 episodes starts streaming on Hulu on Feb. 28.
Before then, Hulu viewers will get a chance to see another acclaimed docudrama, the film “Detroit” by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”). She reteamed with screenwriter Mark Boal, who also picked up an Oscar for “The Hurt Locker,” for this acclaimed film. “Detroit” documents the riots that beset the motor city in the summer of 1967 after the police raid an unlicensed bar on July 23 and arrest the 82 patrons and staff. Margot Robbie recently shared this pic from "exactly a year ago" when she was training for I Tonya
Is Margot Robbie the first actress to ever be nominated playing an Olympic athlete? I legit don't know the answer but I can't think of any others. The only previous Oscar nominated performances that we could think of were men: Will Smith as Muhammad Ali (though the focus there wasn't on the Olympics) and Mark Ruffalo as David Schultz (thanks commenters for this one!)
If you think back over movies that revolved around the Olympics in some way they aren't usually acting showcases (Chariots of Fire) or aren't focused on the Olympians themselves (Munich) or they're films that were either aimed at wide audience crowd pleasing or just didn't connect with awards voters (The Cutting Edge, Personal Best, Running Brave, Prefontaine, Eddie the Eagle, Cool Runnings) or they're documentaries...

Perhaps it’s time that Jon Hamm finally got his own action franchise, one that’s lighter on actual stunts than “Taken” and with a little less brain than a John Le Carre thriller. With that in mind, Brad Anderson’s “Beirut” just might fit the bill as an origin story.
It opens in 1972, when diplomat-turned-sorta-spy Mason Skiles (Hamm) is hosting a rollicking house party with his lovely wife; they’re aided by their orphaned Lebanese charge Karim, who is happily delivering finger foods to government VIPs. And then, everything goes topside when his best pal Cal (Mark Pellegrino) arrives at the party with frantic news: Karim isn’t an orphan, and in fact has a big brother with major ties to terrorism.
This accidental crisis doesn’t seem unlikely; Mason is a bit of a smoothie, a negotiator who likes talking his way out of a situation and happens...

A little under a year ago we got tremendously excited when we learned that VH1 Classic was going to be reborn as MTV Classic. Visions of Remote Control marathons filled our heads along with the chance to finally see if lost classics like The State, The Ben Stiller Show, The Tom Green Show and The Andy Milonakis Show lived up to our memories. The MTV vault was overflowing with half-forgotten gems and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to see them again.

On March 27, 1992, Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney heated up the ice rink on the big screen as mismatched Olympians Kate Moseley and Doug Dorsey in The Cutting Edge.
Moseley — a rich, stuck-up figure skater — is paired up with working-class former hockey player Dorsey after an injury derails his NHL dreams. They instantly clash. (Among other barbs, she asks him if he can read, tells him "don't quit your day job" and asks their coach if they can "teach it to breathe with its mouth closed.") But as the duo work together and advance to the Olympics,...

It’s all over but the cryin’… but there’s a lot of cryin’ left to do in this week’s Nashville.
That’s to be expected, of course: While we’ve had a week to process Rayna’s unexpected death thanks to complications from a car accident, her loved ones have had just a few days. So when we check back into Music City, it’s a somber place, indeed. Deacon’s a mess. The girls aren’t much better. And the unholy alliance of Teddy and Tandy...

The Undertaker made his return for the historic 900th episode of Smackdown and boy did he make an impact. When Team Smackdown, the five Superstars who will be competing this Sunday against the five Superstars from Team Raw, were on The Cutting Edge with returning star Edge, the legendary Deadman made his return to the show.
What's newsworthy about the return is a couple things. First of all, he stated that "...Wrestlemania will no longer define who I am." With reports earlier in the year that The Undertaker needed crutches to get around, being involved in the highly physical matches he'd been having at Wrestlemania the past decade is probably not the smartest thing to do for his long term health. Pro wrestling takes a horrible toll on the body. Anyone becoming a wrestler knows this. It's nice to see that he may be putting the brakes on the types...

American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday, a stunning announcement that for the first time bestowed the prestigious award on a musician.
The Swedish Academy cited Dylan for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
Reporters and others gathered for the announcement at the academy's headquarters in Stockholm's Old Town reacted with a loud cheer as his name was read out.

Dylan, who turned 75 in May, had been mentioned in the Nobel speculation for years, but few experts expected the academy to extend the prestigious award to a genre such as popular music.
The academy's permanent secretary, Sara Danius, said that while Dylan performs his poetry in the form of songs, that's no different from the ancient Greeks, whose works were often performed to music.

Tributes to legendary producer Sir George Martin have flooded in across the music world since his death was announced on Tuesday at age 90. The “Fifth Beatle” will next be honored in the forthcoming PBS series, “Soundbreaking: Songs From The Cutting Edge Of Recorded Music,” TheWrap has learned. The 8-part television series was a passion project of the late Beatles producer — the original concept for “Soundbreaking” came from Sir George — as he believed that the remarkable evolution of recording technologies is one of the most important stories of the twentieth century, and one that needs to be told. Edge and Christian will face off with the New Day at Fastlane, in a segment that will combine ‘The Cutting Edge’ with ‘The Peep Show’ format.
It should make for a fun verbal joust, with Edge and Christian as well as the New Day being entertaining mic maestros. Undoubtedly another team will also get involved, probably to take out the New Day after they threaten Edge and Christian.

I'm inspired. And you will be, too, after you watch this video. Not much more need be said about Sir Bob Dylan. Many consider these years to be the zenith of his songwriting prowess. You should know this "rap" song already, but you may not have heard or seen this alternate version taken from his latest must-have collection Bob Dylan - The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (Columbia Records). I believe there is a correlation between flying and filmmaking. Walter Murch makes reference to it in the documentary The Cutting Edge, but his coloration is different. Let’s pretend that Bob Dylan’s The Cutting Edge 1965–1966: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 12 — which covers the studio processes that resulted in the epochal, rock-changing trio Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited (both 1965), and Blonde on Blonde (1966) — exists only in its two-disc version, as it might have some years back. We could rightly laud it, toss the word revelatory around a bit, and wonder idly at just how much is left in the vaults to exploit. There’s got to be a stopping point, right? But since it’s 2015, we get three versions of The Cutting Edge: two CDs of highlights, six CDs of deep diving, 18 CDs of are you fucking nuts? This isn’t just a sop to the nuts who initiated the entire Bootleg Series enterprise by, you know, illegally releasing and/or buying Dylan’s outtakes and concert recordings at the dawn of the '70s.

Dylan concerts have never really been intended for hit-seeking crowds (imagine that), as he's fond of reworking his most iconic songs into different styles and tempos. It can be a fascinating thought experiment, hearing what could have been of the '60s folk and rock canon — one that drives interest to a new Dylan box set, The Cutting Edge 1965–1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, out this Friday. Over the course of many discs (one comprised of nothing but alternate versions of “Like a Rolling Stone”), listeners bear witness to Dylan’s creative process in the studio during one of the most divisive moments of his career: starting with 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home and culminating with his all-time classic Blonde on Blonde the following year, the period when he first gravitated toward electric sounds and more abstract lyrics. On a micro level, “Just Like a Woman” — one of...
