Kim Gordon has released a new song, “Banging on the Freeway,” alongside a music video for the track. The clip was directed by her daughter and frequent collaborator Coco Gordon Moore.
The track is a clattering, mesmerizing blast of propulsive noise rock crossed with some far-flung hip-hop influences as Gordon sinks into repetitive hooks and phrases, including the titular “Bangin’ on the freeway” and lines like “Bad TV on repetition.” The video, meanwhile, largely comprises shots of Gordon and her daughter doing the most Los Angeles thing anyone can do...

Science fiction and socially conservative Thailand are an unlikely mix which is explored in upcoming anthology series “Tomorrow and I,” that global streamer Netflix will release later in 2024.
Directed by Paween Purijitpanya, the four-part show reimagines everyday scenarios in intriguing ways. The 70-minute episodes cover: bringing loved ones back from the dead through use of cloning technology; intelligent sex robots; how artificial intelligence could move Buddhist teachings on from their fixed traditional position; and how people might come to rely on ‘octopuses’ to get by in perpetually flooded cities.
The cast includes Pakorn Chatborrirak, Violette Wautier, Waruntorn Paonil, Treechada Hongsyok, Ray Macdonald, Timethai, Thongchai Thongkuntom, Aelm Thavornsiri, Pongsatorn Jongwilas, Chananticha Chaipa, and Wanichaya Pornpanarittichai.
Purijitpanya has previously written, directed or edited segments of 2007 film “Body,” 2008 film “4bia” and its 2009 follow-up “Phobia 2” as well as the 2012 feel-good film “Seven Something,” the boundary-pushing 2021 title “Ghost Lab,” and an acclaimed episode of...

Look now, I love a good revenge drama as much as the girl next door, but in no way am I going to appreciate something that exploits sexual abuse as its scandalous central theme and goes on to show it multiple times. Master of the House is certainly not about sexual abuse. In fact, it’s just a basic old “kill the affluent” story that comes to life in a rich Thai household. I’m not going to lie; I’m already quite bored with this premise, and while initially we got really creative explorations, it’s now become just a buzzword like “sustainability.” The last time I saw it in the Thai industry was in the movie Hunger, and I didn’t think that stuck the landing either. The last Thai drama I watched on Netflix was The Believers, and that was far better in terms of plot and execution.

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

The late 1990s had an odd fascination with the Devil and the end of days that gave audiences all kinds of crazy films with varied levels of success. Most of these seemed to come out right around 1999, the end of the millennium when people were starting to panic. However, some of these end of days films came out earlier and set the trend. 1997 was an odd year that saw the release of Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Own, Volcano, the original Open Your Eyes, Seven Years in Tibet, and a bunch more. There was a trend for the end of days, but also a search for religion which then led to the perfect storm of both with The Devil’s Advocate (watch it Here), a bit end of days, a bit of religious mayhem, and a whole lot of cautionary tale.

Prime Video might be pulling back from Southeast Asian originals, but Netflix remains is doubling down on originals in the region.
The streamer has unveiled several titles from Indonesia and Thailand, and a Chinese-language slate for 2024.
One of the bigger titles on the streamer’s Indonesian slate is sci-fi series Nightmares and Daydreams, which marks Netflix’s first collaboration with Joko Anwar.
Anwar’s horror films are often well-received at the box office, with Satan’s Slaves and its sequel both in the top 10 list for highest-grossing films in the country.
Director Timo Tjahjanto will return with action film The Shadow Strays, after making comedy action flick The Big 4 in 2022, which became the second most-watched non-English film on the streamer. The Shadow Strays will star Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, Marissa Anita, Nirina Zubir, Sita Nursanti, Fachri Albar and Asmara Abigail.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Kim Gordon has announced her second solo studio album. The Collective is out on March 8th via Matador, and the Sonic Youth musician is celebrating the news with the lead single “Bye Bye” as well as a batch of 2024 tour dates.
Gordon’s follow-up to her 2019 debut No Home Record brought her back to producer Justin Raisen, whose knack for dub and hip-hop leaning beats intermingle with Gordon’s best-in-class rock songwriting.
Those colliding genres are especially evident on the rumbling, ear-splitting “Bye Bye.” You would probably never guess it was a Kim Gordon song until her droning voice comes in, rattling off what sounds like her to-do list before a big trip: “Buy a suitcase, take pants to the cleaner,” she raps. “Call the vet, call the groomer/ Call the dog sitter.”
Before long, roaring guitars come in, almost as if signaling anxiety about travel — or something more sinister.

Spiders rank high among the iconic symbols of Halloween thanks to endless seasonal décor and their superstitious association with witches. Still, the eight-legged arachnids are frequently considered the scariest thanks to the prevalent fear of them. Spiders tend to elicit a reaction.
Most people go out of their way to avoid the eight-legged creatures, whether due to full-blown arachnophobia or just a mild unease. This week’s streaming picks capture the primal terror that spiders evoke; if you’re not arachnophobic now, these five movies might instill a new fear.

That the title of Penny Lane’s documentary is a question, not a statement, holds more meaning than you might think. “Hail Satan?” follows the Satanic Temple’s years-long efforts to advocate for religious pluralism and redefine what it means to be a Satanist, as the group believes that “witch hunters” have been allowed to set the terms of debate for too long. One case in point: the Satanic Panic that influenced everything from the public perception of bands like Judas Priest to how the West Memphis Three were prosecuted.
“You can’t really fully understand the Satanic Temple if you don’t understand the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and ’90s,” says Satanic Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves in the film, over footage of news segments carrying ominous titles like “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground.” “The United States was caught up by anti-Satanist hysterics.”

The movie follows a psychologist Cal Jamison (Sheen) and his young son (Hayley Cross) who move to New York City following the electrocution of Cal’s wife. Cal begins to treat a police officer who has worked undercover in infiltrating a Hispanic cult and now lives in fear of the cultists, who have been known to engage in a series of brutal, ritualistic child murders. In time, Cal begins to suspect that there is a larger conspiracy at work—one involving affluent New Yorkers and the police—and that Cal, his son, and his new girlfriend (Shaver) are the next targets on the cultists list.

In honor of the impending Halloween holiday, Dr. Jimmy Terror from Dr. Terror’s Blog of Horrors stops by The Liberal Dead to assist in merrymaking and overall mischief.
More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead was recently released on October 18th. I’m sure you’ve been reading all about it, but for those of you who have not been sending out for more paramedics here’s the story thus far:
More Brains! A Return To The Living Dead is now available on DVD. It’s the ultimate account of the tongue-in-cheek, stylish and apocalyptic zombie movie. It features contributions from all the main cast as well as clips, photographs, storyboards, conceptual art, publicity materials, archival documents and behind-the-scenes footage.
Basically the best damn documentary you’re going to see all year. It’s this year’s Never Sleep Again (or at least that’s what I’ve...

Ever wonder how much time of your short short life will wind up devoted to silly silly movies like this? Before he became President of the United States in The West Wing Martin Sheen appeared as the baddie in a host of genre movies, some of them pretty darn good. The Little Girl Who Lived Down The Lane (1976) is now recognized as a chilling suspense film. The Dead Zone (1983) had him playing a corrupt politician. Firestarter (1984) cast him as a CIA crony. The Believers (1987) (which was plenty chilling tho Sheen didn't play the villain) was directed by no less a luminary than the great John Schlesinger. But before any of those he played an escaped mental patient in in this 1974...

Horror icon Robert Englund – the original Freddy Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” fame – is slashing his way back into action this week, just in time for Halloween, in a new web series called “Fear Clinic.” In the series, Englund portrays a maniacal genius named Dr. Andover who is obsessed with finding new ways to cure people of their greatest fears – even if it kills them.
Last night on “Attack of the Show” Englund spoke at length about his new character. “I’m kind of a misunderstood genius,” he explained. “But I did something bad in the states. I lost my medical license and had to do community service at a prison. Guess who I ran into – Kane Hodder, the original Jason! And I drag his hockey pucked ass down to my clinic south of the border.”
“But I am the last chance,” Englund continued. “The last resort of the beautiful,...

The plot device of adults protecting children is a time-honored subject in horror films. An omnipresent evil plotting and casting its inky tendrils toward the young and innocent has been seen in films as diverse as John Schlesinger’s Santeria-inflected The Believers, the Dean Koontz adaptation The Servants Of Twilight and Chuck Russell’s misguided Bless The Child. The defense of youth inspires the most protective of emotions in audiences, and the latest film to tap into these specific emotions is Paramount’s supernatural thriller Case 39.
Directed by German up-and-comer Christian Alvart, who first attracted attention with his serial-murder saga Antibodies and subsequently helmed this fall’s sci-fi chiller Pandorum, from a script by Pulse’s Ray Wright, Case 39 stars Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger, Deadwood’s Ian McShane and ubiquitous young actress Jodelle Ferland. After numerous delays (and release in numerous other international territories this winter), the film will open in U.

Perseverance Records ("the small label with a big mission") will soon release a new edition of J. Peter Robinson's music to the John Schlesinger thriller The Believers. In this supernatural thriller Martin Sheen plays a psychiatrist with an interest in a voodoo cult which plans to use his son as their next sacrifice during their ritual. The score was already released once on LP by Varése Sarabande when the movie came out in 1987, but this new re-issue will contain the complete score. The following interview is pulled together from the liner notes of Rudy Koppl as well as original interview conducted by me on the celebration of the new CD issue. Learn more about what it was like to work with John Schlesinger and what kind of new music will appear on the complete edition - including cues that Varése didn't allow to be put on the LP back in the days!

This week I want to talk about an artist who blows my mind on a monthly basis — Jo Chen, the cover artist on the bestselling, award-winning Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight.
I know Buffy’s not a straight-up horror book — it deals with elements from the genre, but the emotional vibe is different, more optimistic and easily redemptive. Buffy’s a prime example of how the material in this genre has leaked into the mainstream. Here’s another: last night they were playing the old Martin Sheen movie, The Believers, on a weird local station called This — “This,” that’s the name of the station. (It sends me into an Abbott and Costello routine.) But This shows cool old movies and TV shows—I can’t imagine what their program manifesto is, unless it’s off-the-beaten-path-stuff-Scott-might-find-interesting.

The AP is reporting that director John Schlesinger has passed away at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. Mr. Schlesinger was 77. Schlesinger was born in 1926 and spent the early part of his career as a bit actor. He then made a successful move behind the lens, becoming one of the "angry young men" associated with the Kitchen Sink school of British filmmaking, along with Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson. Schlesinger crafted the well-received Billy Liar, Darling, and Far from the Madding Crowd before making the film that brought him to prominence in America, Midnight Cowboy. Cowboy, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards®, remains the only X-rated film to win the Oscar for Best Picture; it also garnered Schlesinger the Best Director nod, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for Waldo Salt. Schlesinger never equaled the critical and popular success of Cowboy though he continued to make quality films over the years such as the violent thriller Marathon Man, the creepy suspense/horror film The Believers and the sublime satire Cold Comfort Farm. Schlesinger had suffered a debilitating heart attack in 2000 which led to declining health. He was removed from life support yesterday (Thursday, 7/24). Schlesinger lived the last 30 years in Palm Springs with his companion, photographer Michael Childers. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
