The last of director Éric Rohmer's six "Comedies et Proverbes" series of movies of the 1980s. The other five, in chronological order, are The Aviator's Wife (1981), A Good Marriage (1982), Pauline at the Beach (1983), Full Moon in Paris (1984) and The Green Ray (1986).
Cergy-Pontoise, where the film takes place, is a new town and an agglomeration community in France, in the Val-d'Oise and Yvelines departments, northwest of Paris on the river Oise.
The title literally means the (male) friend of my (female) friend, or perhaps the boyfriend of my girlfriend: it echoes the proverb "Les amis de mes amis sont mes amis" ("My friend's friend is my friend").
The first title of the film was "Les Quatre Coins" ("The Four Corners").
