Geralt of Rivia is deep in his feelings atop The Witcher‘s second season, and it’s going to take more than a little questing to distract him from his pain. The more he quests… the more he feels.
The season premiere, one of eight episodes now streaming on Netflix, picks up directly after that little kerfuffle at Sodden Hill, with soldiers taking stock of casualties and survivors. Believing Yennefer to be among the former, Tissaia relays this fake news to Geralt, who looks devastated enough to cry. (If only he could!) Geralt gives Tissaia a brief “Was it worth it?...

While The Witcher Season 1 was criticized by some for its narrative form, it was lauded universally for the world-building it accomplished, and The Witcher Season 2 Episode 1 uses that foundation to begin fleshing out the action.
The premiere manages to pick up immediately after the climactic ending of the first season, despite the two years that have elapsed in real-time. The North collects its dead on the Sodden Hill battlefield, while Nilfgaard licks its wounds.
But, almost immediately, Geralt and Ciri have a side-adventure that sets in place what may prove a recurring theme for the season: Who are the real monsters?
The sojourn at Nivellan's estate borrows heavily on the fairy tale tropes of "Beauty and the Beast" but flips enough to make it innovative.
Nivellan's enchanted home is never satisfactorily explained. Is his ability to conjure things up (to drop from the ceiling) part of his curse? Or is...

18 of the contributors of Asian Movie Pulse from America, Oceania, Europe and Asia have voted the 25 Best Films of 2021, resulting in what we consider a great selection, particularly since the offer of titles this year was much wider, as the industry started to recover from the disaster that was 2020, particularly during the second semester. In that regard, the list includes films Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Philippines, S. Korea, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lebanon, Iran, China and Taiwan, while crime thrillers, animations, shorts, action and documentaries have found a place.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian films of 2021, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2020, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them, in one of the calmer votes in the history of Amp.

Soundtrack albums are rare when it comes to Grammy winners for Album of the Year. Only three have ever won the top prize, and none in 18 years. Could “A Star is Born” end that drought?
To date, the three honored soundtracks were “Saturday Night Fever” (1979), “The Bodyguard” (1994) and most recently “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2002). Other movie music compilations have been nominated over the years but haven’t won, including “West Side Story” (1962), “The Sound of Music” (1966), “Grease” (1979), “Flashdance” (1984), “Beauty and the Beast” (1993), “Waiting to Exhale” (1997) and “Black Panther” (2019).
The good news for “A Star is Born” is that we already know the recording academy likes it. Its centerpiece ballad, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s duet “Shallow,” won two Grammys last year and was also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. But the whole soundtrack album wasn’t eligible until now because of the Grammys’ unique eligibility period.

Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) is a widow in her 70s who lives in a home full of tasteful pastel furniture in a calmly boring suburb of London. She’s sweet, pretty, pert, and polite, with glowing skin framed by an impeccable gray-white coif; if Doris Day had been a conventional middle-class Englishwoman, she might have looked and acted like this. The opening sequence of “The Good Liar” hops back and forth between Betty filling out the user questionnaire on a website called Distinctive Dating and the man she’s just met on the site doing the same thing. The tone is genial and spry, very senior-citizen “You’ve Got Mail,” and the film then cuts to Betty arriving at a posh London restaurant, where she and her date are meeting for dinner.
He walks in, looking like a hound dog in a trench coat, and sits down opposite her with his eyes a-twinkle.

On their first night out together after meeting on a dating site for widowed septuagenarians (Ok Boomer?), Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) and Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) take in a screening of “Inglourious Basterds” at a London cinema. It’s the summer of 2009, and neither of these characters knows what happens at the end of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist World War II extravaganza. Leaving the theater, Roy scoffs at what they’ve just watched: “Young people will think that’s what actually happened.” Betty isn’t so sure — she argues that the modern world has done more to clarify history than it has to obscure it.
More than just a crafty bit of foreshadowing (the full mirth of which isn’t clear until almost two hours later), this early scene appears to set up a pleasantly middle-brow thriller about our power to alter the past. If Bill Condon’s “The Good Liar...

On November 17, 1989, Disney debuted “The Little Mermaid” to audiences across America, and 30 years later, it’s about to do it again. “The Little Mermaid Live!” is the latest live musical event to hit television, preceding the Mouse’s live-action film adaptation starring Halle Bailey (and slated to start production in 2020) and following in the footsteps of small screen hits like “Grease,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and last year’s “Rent” adaptation. But this is the first entry from ABC, the first attempt to reimagine a beloved Disney classic on TV, and everyone involved aims to make a pretty big splash.
First off, “The Little Mermaid Live!” isn’t reimagining the original film so much as it’s accompanying its melody. Ron Clements and John Musker’s classic movie will be “interwoven” into the live production — in other words, when there’s a song to be sung, it’ll be performed live...

Further evidence that Disney’s Frozen 2 is going to be a gargantuan hit at the November box office: Both Fandango and Atom Tickets have announced that the first day presales for the Chris Buck-Jennifer Lee-directed sequel have eclipsed those for all other animated films. While tracking has Frozen 2 opening to $100M over the weekend of Nov. 22-24, some B.O. prognosticators believe its higher at $125M.
For Fandango, Frozen 2 is the online and mobile-ticket seller’s fastest-selling animated pic in its 19-year history, outpacing the presales of Toy Story 4.
Fandango’s new top five animated first day presales record-holders are as follows:

Exclusive: STXinternational has picked up rights to Dave Franco’s directorial debut The Rental, which stars Dan Stevens (Beauty And The Beast) and Alison Brie (Glow).
Written by Franco and Joe Swanberg, the pic follows two couples who embark on a weekend getaway to a seemingly perfect house they’ve booked online. But what begins as a celebratory weekend for the four close friends turns into something far more sinister as secrets they’ve kept from each other are exposed, and they realize they may not be alone.
Also starring are Shelia Vand (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night) and Jeremy Allen White (Shameless). The film is currently in post-production. We broke news of the project earlier this year.
Stx will be shopping international rights at Afm this week. Endeavor Content is handling domestic.

“It was often thought that nostalgia was a bad thing,” Jeff Goldblum intones in his new Disney Plus documentary series, “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” “It was thought to be an illness. But nostalgia can be a potent psychological force for uplifting.”
He’s talking, here, about ice cream. “It’s like a time machine,” he says, sounding like Don Draper describing a photo carousel, “this lovely sweet treat, in that it can take us back to a time when we were happy, when we first enjoyed it.” But he could as easily be providing the pitch for Disney Plus itself. The first shows for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” begin tonight, and there’s every expectation that is will be the biggest-opening, top-grossing domestic release of 2017. At a minimum, we’re looking at a $200 million opening, with $225 million very likely.
With strong holiday playtime following the first 10 days of release, a multiple of at least three times its opening is possible, which could propel to the domestic take to around $700 million.
Yes, it’s going to be huge — but there’s a few records it might not beat. Here (with adjusting numbers to 2017 values) are some comparable numbers that “Jedi” will easily best, and a few that seem unlikely.
Top domestic grosses of 2017: Yes
“The Last Jedi” should find the opening numbers easy to beat, and it’s hard to imagine it won’t be the best-performing movie of the year.

It’s not easy to parse the idiosyncratic minds of the Hollywood Foreign Press, a motley crew of 90 veteran entertainment media who chum up with publicists and junketing stars throughout the year as they report on movies and TV for their outlets in 55 countries. Many of these folks have been covering the usual suspects for so long, they feel like friends.
And that’s one reason why they make such different choices from other critics’ groups. The relatively senior HFPA’s taste runs the gamut from sophisticated (“Moonlight”) to mainstream (“The Martian”). They do like celebrities to come to the glitzy Golden Globes Awards show on January 7 (Daniel Day-Lewis, Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Jennifer Lawrence come to mind), which is by far the most fun party night of the year in Hollywood. So that’s another factor.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future. This week, we look back on a monumental year, for better or worse.
Ask enough women in Hollywood about being a woman in Hollywood, and eventually a theme emerges: conversation is great, and the acknowledgement of the skewed numbers and lack of equality is essential. It’s a discussion that needs to happen, but won’t it be great when we can stop just talking and put words into action?
It’s a two-pronged dream — that conversation will move past chatter and produce real results, and that those results will create a world where inequality becomes a thing of the past.
But talking has a way of being one-sided and, as it turns out, there needed to be one more step in between the chatter and actually moving things forward. That finally happened in 2017, the year people stopped talking,...

With plans afoot for a live action take on Mulan, we look at the challenges facing Disney...
After more than 50 years of making animated features, Disney have now turned their attention to live-action adaptations of their famous films. After releases such as 101 Dalmatians (1996), Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015), the studio's new creative direction has earned critical acclaim and financial success. It is also making its mark on the global box office, as the recently released Beauty And The Beast remake has earned small change in the region of $1.2bn and counting.
Among the upcoming remakes planned is Mulan, which already has fans of the 1998 Disney film debating about its faithfulness to the animated feature. That's especially so given reports about director Niki Caro's indecisiveness regarding the inclusion of songs such as Honour To Us All and I'll Make A Man Out Of You, as well as the...

As part of an appreciation of the cult '80s fantasy series Beauty and the Beast — which includes an in-depth talk with series writer George R.R. Martin — THR offers this reminiscence from the show's Beast himself, Ron Perlman.
Beauty and the Beast is a project that remains very near and dear to my heart, for a full assortment of reasons.
When I got the part, I had been kicking around Hollywood for a while but hadn't yet made it. The show was the first mainstream gig I ever got. Friday night, 8:00 p.m. on CBS primetime, playing one of...

Before Beauty and the Beast became a Ziegfeld-esque follies of dancing silverware in a 1991 Disney animated feature — now a blockbuster live-action adaptation — it captivated adults as a 1987 CBS fantasy-romance series.
The show, which drew inspiration from Jean Cocteau's 1946 classic La Belle at la Bete, envisioned the tale unfolding in modern-day Manhattan, where our beauty is Catherine Chandler (The Terminator's Linda Hamilton), a lawyer savagely attacked in Central Park and left to die. She is rescued by the lion-faced Vincent (Ron Perlman) — a sensitive, literate soul with savage tendencies — who inhabits a rich...

Beauty and the Beast myth should be safe for generations to come: The beloved 1991 animated version returns March 17 for a live-action adaptation. But in 1987, millions fell for a very different take on the ultimate odd couple, with CBS' modernized version of the 18th century French fairy tale.
In that Beauty and the Beast, Linda Hamilton, then 31, played a New York City assistant D.A. who is savagely beaten, slashed and left to die in Central Park. (The "Preppy Murder" case had grabbed headlines the year prior.) She is rescued by Vincent, a...

Without uttering a word, the main title sequence for FX’s new anthology series “Feud: Bette and Joan” sets the dramatic yet somber tone for the entire series by using musical and graphical cues from ‘60s cinema.
While the images trace the plot of “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?,” it also reflects the misery of the actresses drawn into a cycle of torment of their own devising. Take a look at the sequence:
The credits fit right in with “Feud,” a technicolor feast that examines the even more colorful rivalry between acclaimed actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, which reached its pinnacle while they co-starred in the psycho-biddy horror movie “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” in 1962. The series takes place during and after the shooting of the film, in which Bette (Susan Sarandon) and Joan (Jessica Lange) play combative siblings Baby Jane and Blanche, respectively. There is no love lost between these sisters,...

Weekend Preview:The final, R-rated, impale-happy, Hugh Jackman-cussing Wolverine film, Logan hits 4,071 theaters this weekend and Fox's guidance is $60 million. The studio is pulling its punches (or adamantium claws) though as that means they think it's heading for $14.7K per screen average. In a weekend where its competition is the well-reviewed holdover Get Out, the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and Lionsgate/Summit's faith-based film, The Shack, Logan's prospects seem better than that.Since moving out of the X-Men Academy to make it on his own Wolverine has had solid commercial, if not always critical, success. The first outing, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine may have made $85 million its opening weekend (in 4,099 theaters for a psa of $20.8K) but it had a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 6.7 on IMDb, a B+ on CinemaScore and nearly knee-capped the Deadpool character for all time. It ended up with $173 million domestic, $193 million...

A new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been cut and is ready to go! According to Trailer Track, the new trailer will be released soon, but there's no exact date given. Alberta Film Ratings adds that the new trailer will be two minutes and twenty seconds long. That two minutes and twenty seconds of absolute awesomeness that awaits us!
I'm going to go ahead and speculate that the trailer will be released with Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which comes out on March 17th. That's going to be a huge film that everyone's going to see, so it makes sense to me that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer would be attached to it.
Whenever the next trailer is going to be released, we know that James Gunn is going to load it with all kinds of great footage to get fans even more pumped for the film.

Ewan McGregor is pretty busy these days — in addition to both the “Trainspotting” sequel and live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake, he also has two roles in the third season of “Fargo.” Now, add yet another job to McGregor’s schedule: He’s replacing Charlie Hunnam in Drake Doremus’ “Zoe.” Doremus is fairly prolific himself: He’s currently at Sundance with “Newness,” starring Nicholas Hoult and Laia Costa, and “Equals” came out just last year. Deadline first broke the news.

Ok, so maybe this pic would be more seductive, at least to me, if it was Gamora's head in the forefront of the image as opposed to Drax's fat noggin. Instead, Star-Lord is giving much more of an incredulous look, perhaps Drax is pondering the metaphorical meaning of life, maybe he is wondering how a planet could also be a father, or it's possible he decided that everyone is responsible for killing his family so everyone must die. Either way, more and more images of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 are trickling in and I'll take what I can get concerning one of my favorite franchises of all time.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is the sequel to Guardians Of The Galaxy, a surprise megahit in the Marvel superfranchise, that focuses on a group of space "pirates" turned heroes, the aftermath of Ronin's defeat, and the relationship with...

December 25th is internationally marketed as a day of cheer, togetherness, and bright lights during one of the darkest nights of the year. But, there are those of us who want to indulge in that darkness. There is a wealth of terror to be found in winter nights, and the following stories are perfect fodder for that breed of dread. Curl up by the fire, turn the lights off, and read... if you dare.
"The Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood: A group of hunters in snowbound Montana encounter a windy, wintry forest spirit in one of Algernon Blackwood’s scariest tales. By taking an ancient, metaphorical legend and bringing it face-to-face with research and authentic characters, Blackwood forms an account of elemental terror that freezes the soul. Nothing is creepier—or more fun—on a windy December night.

If you’ve been paying attention to the 2017 Oscars race, you’ve likely heard of a little movie titled La La Land. The Damien Chazelle-directed romantic musical features numerous tunes throughout but Lionsgate is pushing hard for just two — “City of Stars” and “Audition” — in the best original song category. One question remains: does having multiple pieces nominated help or hurt a film? Let’s take a look back at what history seems to indicate.
La La Land — while likely a frontrunner for many categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, even the coveted best picture — we’re going to be focusing on the musical side. Both of the film’s stars, Ryan Gosling (jazz musician Sebastian) and Emma Stone (aspiring actress Mia), lent their vocal chops to these two numbers with him owning most of “City of Stars” and her dominating in “Audition.

As you no doubt know by now, the newest trailer for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a huge success. As far as previews go, it’s probably one of the best we’ve seen all year, teasing the film’s humor, action and chemistry between the main cast without giving away anything at all about the plot. It resulted in a very tantalizing look at the upcoming sequel and allowed fans to rest assured that it’ll be every bit as good as its predecessor was – if not better.
As such, it’s no surprise that the teaser has racked up an incredible amount of views in its first 24 hours. How many, you ask? Well, according to Gunn, it received 81 million views in its first day of being live. That makes it the second biggest teaser trailer of all-time, behind only Beauty and the Beast.

No one could have guessed how big of a phenomenon the HBO series Game of Thrones was going to be. Okay, maybe some could have, but certainly didn't. Yes, it was based on a bestselling series of novels, and yes the storytelling in those books is nothing short of breathtaking, but given the meditative pacing and the huge cast of characters, I personally didn’t foresee this becoming anything more than a moderate success. Since its first season, Game of Thrones has become a worldwide sensation, and has firmly found its place next to big franchises like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter in terms of its rabid fanbase and existence in the pop culture zeitgeist.
The conclusion of this show has been quite the slow build, but in 2018, it looks like we will be seeing the last of the likes of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. While the...

Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s classic fairy tale “The Beauty and the Beast’ has been adapted to film and television numerous times. There’s Jean Cocteau’s 1946 version, the 1987 CBS TV series starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton, and of course, the 1991 animated Disney musical film. While there’s a highly-anticipated live-action Disney adaptation of the fable, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as Belle and Beast respectively, set to be released next year, audiences can check out a different adaptation very soon. Christophe Ganz’s French-language “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel, will be ready for theaters this week.

One decade ago today, we first learned the story of American hero Ricky Bobby. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby opened in theaters 10 years ago today. Audiences came out in droves that weekend for the comedy starring Will Ferrell as a winning-obsessed Nascar driver. As we settle in for the long ten month wait until Game of Thrones returns to television, we're not quite ready to stop talking about the show yet. And since we're really going to be off-book moving forward (unless George R.R. Martin releases The Winds of Winter between seasons and it contains story points beyond what we've seen so far in the show), I figured I'd throw out a few predictions about some plotlines that could happen in season 7 and see what you all think.
Jaime vs. Cersei
At this point in Martin's novels, Jaime Lannister is pretty much done with Cersei because she slept with Lancel (and a litany of other people) and he feels betrayed and inadequate. The finale left his reunion with his sister/lover intentionally vague, but that look they shared at the end certainly wasn't a loving one. He's gotta be pretty pissed that his...

Netflix and DreamWorks have 16 TV series in development, says DreamWorks CEO.
Director Guillermo Del Toro was joined by DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg during an Annecy Film Festival masterclass this week in which the two men revealed some insider titbits on projects they have worked on and more general thoughts on animation.

Fan favorite actor Ron Perlman took to his official Facebook page and Instagram account to put his name in the running to play the mutant Cable in Director Tim Miller's "Deadpool 2" starring Ryan Reynolds. The actor has started a campaign to get cast in the film which would see Reynolds reprise his role as Wade Wilson aka 'Deadpool' alongside the time-traveling mutant Cable.
Perlman has posted photographs of himself side-by-side with Cable from the comic books and the resemblance seems uncanny. The actor shared a pic on Instagram with the caption "Even my fave artist got into the fray..." implying comic book artist Shaine Schroeder who first posted an image of Perlman and Cable. Perlman added another comparison of himself and Cable on his official Facebook account with the caption: "Or hair. I'm the only one with Cable's friggin Hair!."
