1984, the year of many interests and fears for Americans, from fears of a nuclear attack still remaining to a love-hate relationship with consumerism, American films explored teenage life in all its aspects. Some of these films were more memorable and on point for life and fears of the American teenager from living in the valley in Valley Girl, survival like Red Dawn and The Zero Boys, and a whole lot more; the mid-1980s were filled with teen cinema, and some of it was definitely on the dark side. The slasher and the actioner seem like two disparate types of movies, however, both often feature a high degree of suspense, lengthy chases, and a lot of death. A slasher villain will hunt down hapless victims, whereas an action hero may go after one enemy or a whole group of them. Grisly kills and an assortment of weapons are also to be expected.

Now, there are some action movies that infuse more slasher elements than others. Classics like The Terminator and Predator are unmistakably modeled after slashers, but they’re not the only ones. Others take on the traits of slashers more than their peers, ultimately creating a more unique viewing experience.

The following ten lesser seen movies give action and slasher fans the best of both worlds.

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.

And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.

Reed’s Point reunites several of the people behind 2018’s D-Railed, including director Dale Fabrigar (They Crawl Beneath), and co-writer Suzanne DeLaurentiis (Area 401) who wrote the script along with Sandy Lo and Tricia Aurand (Middleton Christmas). I found it to be a fun mash-up of monsters, ghosts, and a heist gone wrong. So a film from them about The Jersey Devil seemed like it had a chance to be the first film about the creature to actually be good.

It starts with Kelsey (Madison Ekstrand) her boyfriend Alex (Evan Adams; The Wrong Valentine) and cousin Sarah (Sasha Anne) joining Kelsey’s father Greg on a business Rv trip. However, on the way to pick up the client, the driver swerves to avoid a deer and crashes.

Arrow Video’s line of Niko Mastorakis releases continues with early 80s exploitationer Blood Tide, a film that has more behind the scenes pedigree than you’d imagine or expect!

The sheer names connected with the film – which is produced and co-written by Mastorakis, with Brian Trenchard-Smith, credited a creative consultant And Richard Jeffries (who’d later go on to direct the fantastic Scarecrows and The Vagrant) behind the camera – is remarkable. It’s a veritable who’s who of genre filmmaking in the 70s and 80s, all coming together to make a film that feels fantastically Lovercraftian.

As Scream Factory continues to diversify their slate of releases — most recently striking a licensing deal with Warner Bros. at long last, resulting in more John Carpenter titles joining the lineup — one of the exciting parts of the company continues to be their commitment to giving smaller, lesser-known catalogue titles the HD treatment. They’re not always great, but they’re always worth checking out.

★★★☆☆ Cult film archivists Arrow Video sometimes unearth an obscure artefact from a cinematic bygone era which proves to be something of a lost gem and is rightfully lavished with the kind of praise that has previously eluded it. It's safe to say The Zero Boys isn't one of those releases, yet in its own terrible way, there's much enjoyment to be had here. It's the kind of film which feels like it was custom made for a 'bad movie' audience participatory screening.

While Hans Zimmer is better known these days for his relationship with directors like Christopher Nolan, it was Nico Mastorakis who helped first get his foot in the door of the industry. One of Zimmer’s earliest credits was on Mastorakis’ slice of ‘80s horror nastiness “The Zero Boys” (he would also score the director's next effort, "Terminal Exposure") and the film has now been given a fresh 2K restoration by Arrow Video for its upcoming Blu-ray release. Kelli Maroney leads the movie that follows a group of friends who head to the woods for a weekend of survival games, only to wind up fighting for their actual lives against a group of inbred, bloodthirsty maniacs. As a dumb kid, I spent considerable time camped out in front of cable TV. The programming I begrudgingly missed for school or basic hygiene, I captured with my Vcr set to record the maximum hours allotted on a standard VHS tape.

Poorer quality, sure, but it was suitable for the six hours worth of garbage movies and random junk I recorded on a daily basis. I was, however, able to discover some pretty nifty shit during that wondrous time; films like The Zero Boys, Hunter's Blood, Neon Maniacs, Alligator, Quiet Cool, Waxwork, and Dudes remain staples of my diet to this day. Today, I'm a dumb grown-up, and at the risk of this sounding like an Abe Simpson rant, I feel sorry for kids growing up today. I really do. My growth...

Kelli Maroney was the mid 80's scream queen, but she brought something completely unqiue to her take on the final girl. Now the final girl could be tough, smart, resourceful, but she still had a feminine side. Kelli was one scream queen ahead of her time and set the standard for others to follow in her footsteps.
