It is sad how ill-informed our media is! The coverage of the passing away of legendary ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, demonstrates this lack of information and research. The credit for Pankaj’s fame is attributed mainly to one film song, ‘Chitthi aayee hai…’ from ‘Naam’. The film was released in 1986 by which time Pankaj had become a hugely popular ghazal singer, second only to the veteran Jagjit Singh. But then, Jagjit Singh had a head start.
By 1986, Pankaj had quite a few silver, gold and platinum discs to his credit. These discs were awarded by the music companies on an album achieving a certain milestone in sales. Ghazals were initially a choice of certain discerning music lovers.
But Pankaj had a varied repertoire and his numbers such as ‘Ghungroo toot gaye’, ‘Sharab cheez hi aisi hai’, ‘Chandi jaisa rang’ and ‘Niklo na benaqab’ carried a definite appeal for the masses.

His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.
Recall the ebullient “Chandi jaisa rang hain tera”, the pensive “Kabhi saaya hai kabhi dhoop” or “Aap jinke kareeb hote hai”, the lightly mournful “Deewaron se milkar rona...

Pankaj Udhas earned his first accolade as a singer when he was 11 years old. He sang the patriotic song ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ at a public event in his hometown Rajkot when the Sino-Indian War was raging in 1962, and he so impressed a member of the audience that he gifted the young singer what was then a princely sum of Rs 51.
Udhas, who passed into eternity on Monday, February 26, at the age of 72, however, had not planned to become a singer. He was training to play the tabla at the Sangeet Natya Academy in Rajkot, where he had been enrolled along with his brothers by his father, Keshubhai Udhas, a government official who had learnt to play the dilruba from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.

Itni pyari pyari baat hai
Muskurane lage hum
Yeh soch ke tum aaoge
Deewane huye hum
Kabhi hum tujhko nihaare
Kabhi tera naam pukaare
Karenge baithke baatein
Kabhi hum nadi kinare
Yeh mausam khubsurat
Jo humko mila gaya
Tere aane ki khushi mein
Yeh saawan aa gaya
Ishq bharke boondon mein
Pyaar barsha gaya
Tere aane ki khushi mein
Yeh saawan aa gaya
Ishq bharke boondon mein
Pyaar barsha gaya
Tu jo aayi raat din ho gaya
Chand pata ni kahan kho gaya
Jugnu tere piche chalne lage
Aisa laga kuch gazab ho gaya
Chhat par yeh badal bulaaye mujhe
Pani ki boondein nachaye mujhe

Chennai, June 11 (Ians) Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the icon of the Dravidian movement, was one of the most respected script writers in the Tamil film industry.
This was mainly due to the real life situations in the scripts he has written with most directly resonating with the ordeals faced by ordinary workers and labourers who were always close to his heart.
The veteran Dmk leader had once in an interview said that he used to promote rationalism and equality in his movies and he shunned larger than life images of his characters.
He had said that his characters were generally people from humble backgrounds and lived a tough life. The stories written by Kalaignar generally had an impact on ordinary men and women and they loved Karunanidhi as a messiah to remove their worries and difficulties.

Mahesh Bhatt, who has written the upcoming “1920: Horrors of the Heart”, says the film, despite its ‘horror’ tag, is not just another horror film, but it has an emotional family drama woven into it. Known for his ground-breaking films such as “Saaransh”, “Arth”, and “Naam”, Bhatt last wrote “Hamari Adhuri Kahaani”.
Talking about the “1920” sequel, the writer-director said: “The film is an emotional family drama woven with horror. We have narrated the story around a family drama. People will see and will relate to it as there is a mother, father, sister, all relations in the film.”
Bhatt added: “Vikram and I together have an experience of 90 years. We are bringing our experience together on screen and now we have given the onus to the younger generation to take it forward. I feel at a time like this, post-Covid, to bring a non-star film to theatres and that too in Hindi,...

A spirit of optimism pervades this compelling film about trying to create an Indigenous Australian haka
It’s been a wonderful year for documentaries about Indigenous Australian artists, with Firestarter: Story of Bangarra charting the evolution of the magical Bangarra Dance Theatre and My Name is Gulpilil presenting a portrait, in the spirit of a living wake, of the great Yolŋu actor David Gulpilil.
Now comes director Larissa Behrendt’s Araatika: Rise Up! – which isn’t about artists per se but certainly about creative expression, poised at the intersection of art and sport, following a group of Nrl players as they create the First Nations equivalent of a haka.

Once My Name‘s Jiwoo figured out who her father’s murderer was, there was no turning back in the finale of Netflix’s edgy and vengeance-packed Korean drama.
The question was: How would Jiwoo get to Mujin to exact her revenge if the police had her locked up behind bars? The answer arrived in the form of Mujin’s attorney, who showed up to the police station and demanded that Jiwoo’s injuries be treated. The police obliged and escorted Jiwoo to the hospital where Mujin had one of his lady underlings waiting to help Jiwoo escape.

The planet’s richest man got his very own Star Trek series, tonight on Saturday Night Live.
“For decades, the Star Trek franchise has brought you unforgettable voyages from the final frontier,” observed the narrator of its trailer. “Now, the tradition continues with a new ship, a new crew and a new captain, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.”
“Dude, space is freaking awesome!” says host Owen Wilson’s Bezos.
The new series is titled Star Trek: Ego Quest. It will, of course, follow “the voyages of the SS New Shepard and its crew of random weirdos,” including First Mate Jeff Bezos’ Brother Whose Name Escapes Me (a bald Luke Wilson), Science Officer Rich Kid From The Netherlands (Andrew Dismukes) and 82-year-old astronaut Wally Funk (Heidi Gardner), who complains, “I’m tired!”

As anyone who has spent a minute or two on Tik Tok can tell you, songs from the Venom movie franchise have a prosperity to go viral…not entirely unlike the alien symbiote himself.
A track from legendary rapper Eminem, fittingly titled “Venom,” that was featured in the 2018 Tom Hardy film has popped up all over the Internet in recent years. Here is a particular favorite example of mine.
Yes, most of these memes have to do with filicide. Read into that what you may. Now that the long-awaited sequel to Venom is out, Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, shouldn’t we be expecting another quality Eminem song to go along with it? The answer to that, as it turns out, is a resounding: yes!

“Candyman,” the 1992 slasher movie starring Tony Todd as a vengeful specter in a floor-length fur-lined coat, with a hook for a left hand and a devoted swarm of killer bees, was an urban-legend horror film that was ahead of its time but also, just maybe, a little too much of its time. Todd’s scowling ripper started off as an enslaved person’s son, Daniel Robitaille, who in the late 1800s was a successful artist. But then he had a relationship (and fathered a child) with a wealthy white ingenue whose portrait he’d been commissioned to paint. Her father hired a lynch mob to go after him. The mob tore off his hand and covered him in honey, and a swarm of bees stung him to death. Candyman is the violent ghost he became.
That’s a potentially incendiary premise, but in 1992, amid a swarm of boilerplate sequels featuring Freddy Krueger,...

Friday Night Lights is now back on Netflix and you have to watch it.
Just to be clear, that isn’t a request – it’s an order. The NBC football drama is simply one of the most affecting, thrilling American TV shows of all time. Though premiering in 2006, the show can mark its lineage all the way back to a true story from the late ‘80s. In 1990, sports journalist H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger published the non-fiction book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream. The book follows the story of the 1988 Permian Panthers high school football team in Odessa, Texas as they make a run for a Texas state championship.
The book was adapted into a Peter Berg film of the same name in 2004, starring Billy Bob Thornton. The story of the Permian Panthers was dramatically rich enough to conquer two mediums already, but when a third...

The film is intended to be a re-imagined take on the hit 2016 romance and fantasy anime of the same name as directed and written by Makoto Shinkai. “Your Name” was a box office smash in Japan, earning $358.1 million worldwide, with a bulk of that coming from Japan, making it one of the Top 5 highest grossing movies of all time in the country.

Photo: ‘Ride or Die’/Netflix ‘Thelma & Louise’ meets ‘Bound’ in ‘Ride or Die’, the new Japanese Netflix original film in which lesbian Rei Nagasawa (Kiko Mizuhara) kills the wife-beating husband of old schoolyard crush Nanae Shinoda (Honami Sato), who undresses early in the film to reveal a body covered in bruises. It begins with a ‘Goodfellas’ tracking shot as Rei enters a nightclub to mark her prey, following him home for a graphic sex scene (did I mention that director Ryuichi Hiroki got his start working on softcore porn?) that ends with bare, blood-spattered breasts--she stabs him in the neck while riding him à la ‘Gone Girl’. Afterward, Rei reveals that she had been a virgin beforehand. Failure, competition and the pressure of staying relevant perennially looms on actors in Bollywood. Some can cope with it and some cannot. Those who cannot, often quit and opt for a different path in another fields.
The author has jotted out a few names, who courted the limelight for a while but could not continue their journey in the world of glitz and sparkle called Bollywood.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan has quit Bollywood as an actor. He broke the news earlier this month. Imran made his debut in Hindi film industry in 2008 with the hit film "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na". However, most of what followed was forgettable fare as "Luck", "Kidnap", "I Hate Luv Story" and "Break Ke Baad". There was "Delhi Belly" in 2011, but that was an odd success, clearly not enough. Ask Dateline’s Josh Mankiewicz and Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz what the biggest misperception people have about their family, sometimes referred to as Hollywood royalty, and they have a quick answer. “That we were rich,” says Josh. “That is a pretty significant one,” says Ben. Their grandfather, who died before either was born, was screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, whose battles with Orson Welles over the credit for Citizen Kane will be chronicled in the upcoming Netflix movie Mank. Their great uncle, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, was the legendary writer-director of classic films including All About Eve. The brothers both live in Los Angeles, but they grew up in Washington, D.C., removed from Hollywood and its trappings. Jon Frosch: Here we are, team, another Sundance under our belts! As usual, it’s hard to confidently qualify a given edition of the festival as “good” or “bad”; depending on what you see (this year, there were 114 feature-length world premieres), Sundance can either be a thrill or a slog. Or, more typically, both — sometimes even within the span of a single movie (hello, Justin Simien’s Bad Hair).
I did think the narrative films felt a bit smaller this year. I personally didn’t see, or hear of, anything like a Call Me by Your Name, Manchester ...
