It took more than 20 years to make (the longest production time for any movie) after running into a series of difficulties, including the deaths of lead actor Guru Dutt in 1964 and director K. Asif in 1971. The film was abandoned, then revived by Asif's widow, 'Asif, Akhtar', and finally released in incomplete form. In 1985 when sanjeev kumar, after surgery returned back from u.s.a. and looked thin younger and lost some weight. The makers thought sanjeev kumar looks like he looked 20 years ago in the film. So the makers thought to revive the film and complete it and a top producer at that time K.C.Bokadia took over the film to finance it to complete it. Before the shooting started Sanjeev Kumar suddenly passed away then a song and one sequence was shot on duplicates and the good song ' pholon mein tu.....gulshan gulshan......' was not shot at all. Sudesh bhonsle dubbed for Sanjeev Kumar and the film was released as it is.....incomplete. In those days, it was annouced that Akhtar Asif will direct a film for Bokadia, but nothing came on.
As Love And God was released in 1986, K.C.Bokadia presented Love and God, Akhtar was the producer and K.Asif directed the film.
Then later in the year 1976, filmaker H.S.Rawail, made Laila Majnu, based on the same subject.
In 1970s. K. Asif's assistant Sultan Ahmed, wanted to complete this film, but dint worked out.
K.Asif re-started Love And God in the Year 1970 with Sanjeev Kumar and when the maker died in 1971 the film was nearly 80% complete K.Asif worked very fast when he resumed the film.
