Most of the outside scenes that are not in the fancy neighbourhood are shot in Belgium not in The Netherlands where the movie takes place. The opening is filmed in Brussels the capitol of Belgium.
The film was selected into the Canon of Dutch Cinema in 2007, consisting of "sixteen important and defining movies that show the versatility of Dutch movie history".
The movie spawned 2 sequels and a television series.
The voice of Apollonia van Ravenstein (Yolanda Kruisman) was dubbed over by an uncredited Tanneke Hartzuiker because van Ravenstein's accent sounded too southern for the setting, which is supposedly in the western part of the Netherlands. Strangely, this wasn't done for Herbert Flack (Wim Kruisman) who has an obvious Flemish (Belgian) accent.
Simon van Collem: the Dutch film critic, cinephile and TV personality plays the man who ends up getting a car in his swimming pool. His wife in the movie is played by Inge Beekman, the mother of director Dick Maas.
