All of us were shocked with the news of Michelle Trachtenberg’s sudden passing at just 39 years old. Whenever someone in the prime of their life passes, it can hit harder than others. There was clearly so much more life left for her to live and it’s truly tragic. People coming out of the woodwork with their opinions on her life, her career, and even her death. It’s clear that Michelle was a very special person that her friends and family will truly miss. We here at JoBlo are big fans of the actress and felt the need to highlight some of her best roles/performances. So let’s take a look at all the times that Michelle stole our hearts.
Harriet the Spy
The film that put Trachtenberg on the map showed so much potential as the young sleuth. Her comedic timing was impeccable and she was genuinely cool.

For a movie with a lot of blood and guts, The Monkey is full of life. Through filmmaker Oz Perkins and cinematographer Nico Aguilar’s eyes, the world is bright. Greens are lush. Houses are full of color, time, and history. Even the titular monkey is a bright light to the eyes. Death looms large over the James Wan-produced Stephen King adaptation, but so do vibrant color and joy.
It is a comedy, first and foremost, so cinematographer Aguilar’s colorful, wacky choices are spot on for Perkins’ madcap vision. The cinematographer previously shot Rodrigo Prieto’s Pedro Páramo and Elle Callahan’s Witch Hunt. Aguilar took the time to speak with Daily Dead about crafting The Monkey, including the bloody motel sequence and how to best frame the deadly toy.
You’ve said before that you don’t want genre to influence your choices, but rather the story.

Hollywood’s obsession with established characters and stories didn’t start with endless iterations of Marvel superheroes. From the earliest days of sitcoms, producers tried to cash in on the popularity of hit comedy movies by translating them into weekly television shows. But except for rare occasions — namely, M*A*S*H and What We Do in the Shadows — the imitations rarely live up to the originals.
Here are seven terrible sitcoms that wasted the goodwill of the movies they were based on…
1 Fast Times
Hey, everybody, look who’s back! It’s… Mr. Hand? Ray Walston was a champ as a fed-up teacher in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but a reboot without Sean Penn or Phoebe Cates couldn’t help but disappoint. Critics complained that the network TV version took the movie’s realistically horny characters and “sanitized them into blandness.”

The best Jennifer Jason Leigh movies and TV shows include a strong mix of genre releases and some top independent efforts. She is a second-generation actor, her father being Vic Morrow. Leigh was 21 years old when her father died in an on-set accident while filming The Twilight Zone, but she was already entrenched in the Hollywood industry by this time, having appeared in Fast Times at Ridgemont High the year before his death.
Since then, Leigh has starred in everything from thrillers like Single White Female and crime dramas like Road to Perdition to TV shows like Fargo and Hunters. Over her career, she has proven to be able to take on any role, from villains to heroes to supporting roles, and she never misses a beat. Nicolas Cage turned 61 on Jan 7th and the actor has no plans to take a break from Hollywood. Cage has a unique cult following in the industry despite the large number of failed movies in the 2000s. Sean Penn may not be the first actor who comes to mind when thinking over the history of funny movie performances. Indeed, Penn’s reputation is as the most serious of thespians, and his is a well-earned one, built upon award-caliber work in heavy-hitting dramas like Dead Man Walking, Mystic River and Milk. But in fact, Penn’s long and impressive filmography is peppered with roles that have seen him shifting gears from drama to comedy, sometimes with memorable results.
Penn’s co-starring turn with then-wife Madonna in Shanghai Surprise may have been an early disaster, but the star kept on scratching his comedy itch nonetheless, starring alongside Robert De Niro in the remake We’re No Angels. Letting his funny side out finally paid off for Penn in terms of awards love, when his performance as a self-absorbed jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown garnered an Oscar nomination.

But for those whose response to the imminent collapse of Sam Goody was a nostalgic sigh, we hear that too. Long before online music existed, Sam...

Phoebe Cates was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s, but as she hasn't appeared in a movie in a long time, fans wonder what happened to her. Cates was launched to stardom as Linda Barrett in the classic high school comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The scene with Linda at the swimming pool, imagined by her best friend Stacy Hamilton’s brother Brad, has become one of the most iconic moments in movie history. Cates continued to appear in movies regularly throughout the rest of the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, but then she stopped starring in films.
It’s been more than two decades since Cates appeared in a movie, and her last appearance before that was almost another decade prior. Aside from a brief voice role in a video game in 2015, Cates hasn’t worked as an actor in years. It’s tough for actors,...

For a few years in the '80s, it felt like Phoebe Cates was everywhere in Hollywood. The child of an entertainment-focused family (her dad was a prolific producer of stage and screen), Cates made her on-screen debut in 1982's "Paradise," a controversial film that's best-remembered as a sort of off-brand "Blue Lagoon" story that featured Cates' underage character nude (the actress was 17 at the time of filming). According to Cates' costar Willie Aames, the nudity in question was filmed by body doubles, but the discourse surrounding the movie would inform Cates' place in pop culture before she even came of age.
Cates' most famous roles would come soon after, and by 1994, she would largely be retired from acting entirely. So why did Phoebe Cates leave Hollywood? The answer is hers to share, and interviews she and her family have given both during her on-screen career and after it ended have been pretty enlightening.

The Superbad true story helped create a wild but undeniably authentic teen comedy that fans have praised for years. Directed by Greg Mottola, with a screenplay by Mottola, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, Superbad tells the story of a group of friends navigating the last weeks of high school and figuring out what to do with the rest of their lives. The teen genre can vary widely, with most contributions being insipid, toned-down portrayals of real situations for teens that they're never allowed to approach the style of Superbad.

Cameron Crowe is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in cinema these past 40 years or so. Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold at the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Jerry Maguire and Rod Tidwell screaming “Show Me the Money.” Lloyd Dobler blasting Peter Gabriel in Say Anything. But before he won an Oscar or became friends with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, Crowe lived an entirely different life as a precocious rock-and-roll journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. Barely ready for life outside of his house, the young writer abruptly found himself hanging out with rock gods and sexy groupies – he was privy to more hedonism than most of us can only dream of before he turned 18. Naturally, that sounds like fodder for a compelling movie, and while he plotted a film based on his younger years for quite a long time, Crowe didn’t get to realize it until Almost Famous,...

Elaine Benes had a number of truly odd boyfriends throughout the course of Seinfeld — I mean, one of them was literally a psychotic clown with a history of violence — but one of the most memorably eccentric of the bunch was Aaron, the “close talker” played by Judge Reinhold.
While the term “close talker” has subsequently become part of our cultural lexicon, filming this particular scene really weirded out one of the Seinfeld cast members.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Reinhold discussed his experience shooting the close-talker scenes. The red bikini scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High is iconic but problematic for sexualizing Phoebe Cates' character. Nudity in the film serves a purpose, except for the red bikini scene, which feels gratuitous and unnecessary. Phoebe Cates found the nude scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High "easy" compared to other roles, helping co-stars with their own scenes.

The Phoebe Cates pool scene in a red bikini is one of Fast Times at Ridgemont Highs most iconic and controversial scenes and the actor has much to say about it. The scene involves Brad Hamilton (Judge Reinhold) fantasizing about his sisters best friend, Linda Barrett, played by Cates, climbing out of the pool in slow-motion and taking off her red bikini top as Moving in Stereo by The Cars plays on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack. All those nights that Sabrina Carpenter spent working late (’cause she’s a singer) have paid off: Short n’ Sweet, her forthcoming studio album, is set for release on Aug. 23.
“This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you too,” Carpenter wrote on social media while simultaneously unveiling the album title, artwork, and release date. In the front cover art, blonde hair tumbles down her back and sunlight glimmers off a spot on her shoulder just above a bright red lipstick kiss mark.

Most movie-to-tv show reboots are of poor quality and forgotten in pop culture. Despite these shows commonly failing, a few under-the-radar reboots featured future big stars. The trend of rebooting classics continues due to the hope of drawing in a fan base.
Before the trend of remakes and legacy sequels really took off, there was still a slew of reboot TV shows based on several classic movies. Most of these shows were of poor quality and therefore forgotten in the history of pop culture. Still, no one can stop producers and executives from wanting to capitalize on a classic, which will likely draw a fan base who at least want to know for sure that the show isn't good.
While the idea of rebooting a classic that is impossible to live up to usually doesn't work, it is still interesting to learn about the under-the-radar reboots that do exist. Some...

It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.
Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

When Nicolas Cage first started out, having made his big screen debut in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High, he went credited as Nicolas Coppola, his given name. As the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage could use that name to hit the fast track to Hollywood fame…and the cast of Fast Times never let him live it down.
In a new book called “How Coppola Became Cage”, author Zach Schonfeld details that exact evolution of Nicolas Cage, beginning with Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But it wasn’t Sean Penn or Judge Reinhold or even Phoebe Cates who hazed Cage – still a teenager – but rather Eric Stoltz, whose character doesn’t even have a name. As Stoltz put it, Cage took some teasing because of his occasional name-dropping. “Nick was one of the younger ones…He was big for his age, and he was quite bold and animated.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is one of the most influential movies of the eighties. It was the first classic teen comedy of the decade, but unlike many other teen-focused flicks, it aspired to be a realistic depiction of what teens go through. In fact, the movie was based on a book by a young Cameron Crowe (who adapted the screenplay) who went undercover as a teen and wrote about his experiences. The movie tackled teen sex, pregnancy, abortion and drugs without any of the doom and gloom the topic would have been presented with had it been made by just about anyone else at the time.
Directed by Amy Heckerling, the movie featured an incredible cast of future stars, including Sean Penn as the stoner icon Spicoli, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates (whose nude scene became one of the most rewound moments of the VHS era), Forest Whitaker,...

Don't Worry Darling is a psychological thriller with an R-rating due to its sexual content, violence, and profanity, making it unsuitable for viewers under 17. The film features several sex scenes between Florence Pugh and Harry Styles' characters, as well as graphic violence including a gory death scene. Olivia Wilde's previous film, Booksmart, also had an R-rating but for different reasons, including strong sexual content and drug use involving teenagers, while Don't Worry Darling's rating focuses on adult themes and violence.
Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was given an R-rating by the MPAA, with the film certainly earning this designation. Don’t Worry Darling and its twist-filled ending offer a different take on familiar stories like The Stepford Wives, as Wilde’s film follows a young wife (Florence Pugh) in the 1950s who begins questioning the nature of the “idyllic” town where she and her husband (Harry Styles) reside.

Making a top ten list of your favourite movies can be difficult, but is it any easier when you narrow that list down to a single decade? IndieWire asked dozens of filmmakers to put together a list of their favourite 80s movies, and the results are as widely varied as the decade itself. Which 80s movies does Bill Hader hold dear to his heart? What are some of Nia DaCosta’s favourites? Can Edgar Wright actually contain himself to just ten movies? What horror movies of the 80s top Eli Roth’s list?

Seconds after Jamie Lee Curtis walks through the door at Wigmaker Associates in Beverly Hills on a pre-strike July morning, the recently minted Oscar winner comes face-to-face with an army of famous names. There are rows upon rows of them, monikers covering heads made of canvas blocks that atelier owner Rob Pickens and his staff use to custom-make wigs worn by Ana de Armas in Blonde, Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things and Amanda Seyfried in Mank.
“I see many of my friends,” declares Curtis as she scans the shelves, pausing to pay special attention to one in particular. “Hi, honey! Here’s my sweet,” she says, planting a kiss on the one named Christopher Guest, her filmmaker husband since 1984. Then Curtis spots another. “I just worked with [Margo Martindale] on a fabulous show called The Sticky. It’s weird when you’re my age, you know all these people.

When the trailer for Gene Stupnitksy’s No Hard Feelings made the rounds online, it felt like a mild event. Not only for a return to big theatrical releases for star Jennifer Lawrence, but also a return of the big-budget, theatrically released sex comedy, a genre that has been mostly relegated to streaming. It was great to see one of the few remaining stars who can draw an audience throw her considerable influence behind a straight-up comedy.
But for No Hard Feelings to salvage comedy it must actually be funny. And overall it is. Lawrence plays Maddie, a 32-year-old Uber driver whose car is repossessed for her failure to pay property tax. She answers a Craigslist ad that offers to trade a Buick as payment for “dating” the owner’s sheltered son, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). Maddie takes on the assignment to find Percy is not the horny teen she expected,...

The sprawling ensemble cast of Amy Heckerling's 1982 classic high school comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High is full of great actors who went on to have a wide variety of careers. An iconic coming-of-age movie based on Cameron Crowe's book of the same name, Fast Times at Ridgemont High revolves around a group of high schoolers as they contend with their first loves, thankless entry-level jobs, and awkward early sexual encounters. Some cast members from Fast Times at Ridgemont High went on to become huge stars with Academy Award wins, like Sean Penn and Forest Whitaker, whereas others have been more underrated, like Brian Backer and Amanda Wyss.

Amy Heckerling's 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," written by Cameron Crowe, is a coming-of-age film that contains far more embarrassment and ambivalence about the teen experience than any expected notes of wistful nostalgia. The Ridgemont High students don't always make good decisions and find themselves stumbling toward sexual liberation and an adult sense of agency. They are trying to achieve some sense of dignity, which is difficult when your sexual encounters are mortifying and you have to wear stupid costumes to your minimum-wage job. They're not good kids or bad kids. They're complete people. It's the film's sense of emotional honesty that likely has it firmly ensconced in the pop consciousness. Its comedic moments are but icing on the cake.

The teen sex comedy craze kicked into overdrive in the spring of 1982 when Bob Clark's semi-autobiographical raunch-fest "Porky's" stunned the industry by racking up 105 million for distributor 20th Century Fox at the U.S. box office. The nation's critics shredded it, but the film's target audience didn't care. They identified with the characters' unabashedly juvenile antics, and kept going back for more.

High school goes by pretty fast, but even executives at Universal Pictures couldn’t remember their own teen glory days when distributing “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”
The 1982 classic film celebrated its 40th anniversary on August 13. And while the movie, helmed by Amy Heckerling and penned by Cameron Crowe, launched the careers of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Sean Penn, and Nicolas Cage, among its star-studded ensemble cast, actor Judge Reinhold alleged Universal was wary to even release it in the first place.
“We were really heartsick because somebody high up said, ‘This is pornography, and there’s no way that Universal’s going to release this movie,'” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter. “We didn’t see it as this horny high school movie at all. We saw it as having the opportunity to do something authentic that was based on the actual experiences of the kids that Cameron chronicled for that whole year.
