A rare, 40-year-old Tom Petty documentary from Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe is available to stream for the first time. Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party originally aired on MTV in 1983 and was not seen for decades after. The film was restored for a one-weekend theatrical release in October, and it’s now available to stream on Paramount+ as of March 11.

Sabrina Carpenter has resumed the Short n’ Sweet Tour for her first shows of 2025 and there has been a change to the setlist!

The 25-year-old singer wrapped the first North American leg of the tour back in November 2024 and she launched the European leg with a show on Monday (March 3) in Dublin, Ireland.

Harriet the Spy

The film that put Trachtenberg on the map showed so much potential as the young sleuth. Her comedic timing was impeccable and she was genuinely cool.

For a movie with a lot of blood and guts, The Monkey is full of life. Through filmmaker Oz Perkins and cinematographer Nico Aguilar’s eyes, the world is bright. Greens are lush. Houses are full of color, time, and history. Even the titular monkey is a bright light to the eyes. Death looms large over the James Wan-produced Stephen King adaptation, but so do vibrant color and joy.

It is a comedy, first and foremost, so cinematographer Aguilar’s colorful, wacky choices are spot on for Perkins’ madcap vision. The cinematographer previously shot Rodrigo Prieto’s Pedro Páramo and Elle Callahan’s Witch Hunt. Aguilar took the time to speak with Daily Dead about crafting The Monkey, including the bloody motel sequence and how to best frame the deadly toy.

Comedies focused on teenage hijinks and keg parties have been a mainstay since the 1980s. You can learn a lot about a generation in their party movies. Incoming hopes to join the ranks of Superbad, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Bottoms. Before the trend of remakes and legacy sequels really took off, there was still a slew of reboot TV shows based on several classic movies. It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.

Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

Richard Romanus, who built his character acting career with a tough guy persona in film and television, has died at 80 at a hospital in Volos, Greece. No cause was given by his son, Robert.

Romanus had a string of memorable roles during his long career. He was Harry Canyon, the cab driver from Heavy Metal, and Richard Lapenna, the husband of Dr. Melfi, in “The Sopranos.” He was loanshark Michael Longo in Mean Streets.

His TV résumé includes Mission: Impossible, Starsky and Hutch, Hawaii Five-0, The Rockford Files, Kojak, Strike Force, and more across the ’70s.

In films, Romanus appeared in Sitting Ducks (1980), Protocol (1984), The Couch Trip (1988), Oscar (1991), Point of No Return (1993), Cops and Robbersons (1994), Nailed (2001) and The Young Black Stallion (2003).

Richard Romanus, the tough-guy character actor best known for his turn as Michael Longo, the Little Italy loan shark who gets into it with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Civello in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, has died. He was 80.

Romanus died Dec. 23 in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, his son, Robert Romanus, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Romanus handled prominent voice roles for Ralph Bakshi in 1977’s Wizards (as the elf warrior Weehawk) and 1982’s Hey Good Lookin’ (as the leader of a 1950s greaser gang), and in between, he played the cab driver Harry Canyon in another animated film, Heavy Metal (1981).

He also appeared on four episodes of The Sopranos as Richard Lapenna, the on-again, off-again husband of Lorraine Bracco’s Jennifer Melfi, from 1999-2002.

In Mean Streets (1973), Romanus’ character is famously disrespected by Johnny when he leans on him for his money.

As the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage could use that name to hit the fast track to Hollywood fame…and the cast of Fast Times never let him live it down.

In a new book called “How Coppola Became Cage”, author Zach Schonfeld details that exact evolution of Nicolas Cage, beginning with Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But it wasn’t Sean Penn or Judge Reinhold or even Phoebe Cates who hazed Cage – still a teenager – but rather Eric Stoltz, whose character doesn’t even have a name. As Stoltz put it, Cage took some teasing because of his occasional name-dropping. “Nick was one of the younger ones…He was big for his age, and he was quite bold and animated.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is one of the most influential movies of the eighties. It was the first classic teen comedy of the decade, but unlike many other teen-focused flicks, it aspired to be a realistic depiction of what teens go through. When the trailer for Gene Stupnitksy’s No Hard Feelings made the rounds online, it felt like a mild event. Amy Heckerling's 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," written by Cameron Crowe, is a coming-of-age film that contains far more embarrassment and ambivalence about the teen experience than any expected notes of wistful nostalgia. The Ridgemont High students don't always make good decisions and find themselves stumbling toward sexual liberation and an adult sense of agency. They are trying to achieve some sense of dignity, which is difficult when your sexual encounters are mortifying and you have to wear stupid costumes to your minimum-wage job. They're not good kids or bad kids. They're complete people. It's the film's sense of emotional honesty that likely has it firmly ensconced in the pop consciousness. Its comedic moments are but icing on the cake.

For the photo campaign of this new project, Carpenter put on a stunning pink plaid suit with gold buttons.

The suit comprises two pieces, a cropped top and matching shorts.

The shorts hugged the actress’s curves perfectly and allowed her to show off her legs and the pink stilettos with red bottoms.

Looking like an absolute doll, Carpenter climbed up some wooden stairs with her blonde hair curled at the ends and falling flawlessly over her shoulder.

The teen sex comedy craze kicked into overdrive in the spring of 1982 when Bob Clark's semi-autobiographical raunch-fest "Porky's" stunned the industry by racking up 105 million for distributor 20th Century Fox at the U.S. box office. High school goes by pretty fast, but even executives at Universal Pictures couldn’t remember their own teen glory days when distributing “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

The 1982 classic film celebrated its 40th anniversary on August 13. And while the movie, helmed by Amy Heckerling and penned by Cameron Crowe, launched the careers of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Sean Penn, and Nicolas Cage, among its star-studded ensemble cast, actor Judge Reinhold alleged Universal was wary to even release it in the first place.

“We were really heartsick because somebody high up said, ‘This is pornography, and there’s no way that Universal’s going to release this movie,'” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter. “We didn’t see it as this horny high school movie at all. We saw it as having the opportunity to do something authentic that was based on the actual experiences of the kids that Cameron chronicled for that whole year.

Sabrina Carpenter can read our minds, after all. On Monday, the “Fast Times” singer announced the dates for her fall tour, alongside its retro poster, to support her recently-released album, Emails I Can’t Send. The U.S. trek is the first time she has hit the road since her Singular tour in spring 2019.
