The Chinese actress Joan Chen, who is this week’s guest on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, has had a career unlike any other.
Nearly 50 years ago, as a teen in Shanghai, Chen was plucked out a classroom and thrown into the movies. Against all odds, she became an award-winning mega-star — but then, in 1981, she turned her back on fame and moved to the U.S. She arrived at a time when virtually no Asians were getting parts of substance in American films. And yet, after essentially starting from scratch, she helped to shatter that glass ceiling, landing leads in big-budget productions, most notably one that took her back to China: Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 epic The Last Emperor, which ended up being nominated for and winning nine Oscars, including best picture.
Over the ensuing 37 years, Chen has experienced tremendous professional ups and downs. She has acted in notable projects of all sorts,...

Exclusive: Last time we heard from Oliver Stone, he was in Cannes for a special screening of Lula, his documentary on the incredible comeback of Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio da Silva and his reemergence from a prison cell to the presidency when it was exposed by a hacker that he was the target of an effort to bring Lula down. The three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker said at that time he had one more ambitious narrative film he was hellbent on directing. He has just signed with Atlas Artists for representation in all areas to make that dream a reality.
Stone would not divulge what this project is, nor would his new rep team elaborate. Suffice to say it will have a strong point of view, as he has shown on an acclaimed resume that includes Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, JFK, Heaven and Earth,...

Exclusive: Director and actress Joan Chen has purchased the life rights of Dr. Qin Huilan and Wei-Lai.
Qin Huilan is a 70-year-old, retired doctor who traveled to Shanghai in 2022 to visit her youngest son, Wei-Lai. As the weather got cold, Huilan borrowed a cashmere coat from her son who surprisingly had a closet full of major designer brands, including Prada. Despite the unspoken taboo subject, the two of them formed a new bond over fashion when Wei-Lai encouraged her to begin posting photos in his outfits on social media accounts that he had created for her.
The following grew quickly, and caught the attention of Ashley Brokaw, an American fashion casting director who is known for her work with Prada. Brokaw direct messaged Huilan via Instagram, informing her that she had spoken with Mrs. Prada, and the two of them would love to have Huilan walk in the 2024 MiuMiu Paris Fashion Week show.

Accomplished jazz musician Kamasi Washington has confirmed his new album, Fearless Movement, set for release on May 3rd.
Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album in six years, and the saxophonist refers to the record as his “dance album”: “It’s not literal,” Washington clarifies in a statement, “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music —expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”
Another significant theme of Fearless Movement is new fatherhood, inspired by Washington’s experience having his first child several years ago. In addition to his daughter appearing on the album, Fearless Movement features contributions from André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, Bj the Chicago Kid, D Smoke, and fellow member of Washington’s collaborative group Dinner Party, Terrace Martin.

Chinese-American actress Joan Chen has spent the last week watching China’s “brave” and “refreshing” independent cinema, but she cautioned young filmmakers against what she sees as a current wave of “correctness” that she believes is stifling the art of filmmaking.
Describing the movement as “the enemy of art,” Chen said she believed conformity to what society currently believes is “correct” has resulted in the scope of creativity and subject matter becoming “narrower and narrower.”
“It’s happening in the U.S.,” said Chen. “But I want [young filmmakers] to forget about what is correct and just tell us what they want to tell us.”
Chen was speaking on the sidelines of the 17th First International Film Festival, hosted by the central highland city of Xining, where she has taken on the role of jury head.
The festival — which ends on August 1 — is the leading event of its kind for independent Chinese cinema.

When Harvey Weinstein was trying to lose weight and visited one of his sets, handlers advised the crew to remove certain foods from the craft service table. With a crew of well over 100 people, the solution wasn’t to provide an enticing, healthy alternative for the visiting boss, who had to be followed with cans of diet soda like a nurse with an oxygen tank. The solution was to eliminate any food that could be a possible temptation. The assumption was clear: Weinstein’s appetite was huge, his discipline nonexistent, and the entire company needed to cater to his shortcomings.
This isn’t meant to be a metaphor to explain the avalanche of sexual assault accusations against Weinstein. It is one of thousands of examples that show how an entire business was built around his failings as a human being. The traits that he forced his staff to account for...

Balletic, stylized and rather aloof, MGM’s biggest musical for 1954 still has what musical lovers crave — good dancing, beautiful melodies and unabashed romantic sentiments. Savant has a bad tendency to fixate on the inconsistencies of its fantasy concept — in which God places an ideal Scottish village outside the limits of Time itself.

I’m not sure that many of us who have been faithfully watching Supernatural since the pilot aired way back in 2005 thought it would make it to twelve seasons. It takes strong ratings, a great cast and crew, cult followers, and maybe even a little luck to make it this far. Those factors have not only allowed this series to endure, but to thrive.
Although Supernatural will forever remain a horror show at its core, an important quality that it’s never lost is that it’s the story of two brothers – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester – who will literally move Heaven and Earth for one another. Furthermore, the basics are still prevalent: “Saving people, hunting things, the family business” – and it feels more like the family business than it has in years.
This is no doubt due to the freshly resurrected Mary Winchester,...

Molly continues to have Offspring trouble in this week's Extant double bill. Here's Holly's review...

In this week’s double episode, Molly becomes a mama to be reckoned with (though she needs to work on her catchphrases), John is hit harder than ever before with the implications of playing God, and... well, all kinds of stuff. Episodes seven and eight, I presume, were meant to be aired in separate weeks, but presented together, they were a lot to deal with. Not that that’s a bad thing - we were treated to probably the greatest amount of reveals to date, not to mention a staggering amount of “what have we done?” Let’s dive in.

It comes around quick, doesn’t it? Seems like only yesterday that Microsoft were announcing the terribly exciting Killer Instinct and now we’re already bored of it. They also announced they’d move both Heaven and Earth to stop you playing used games, you filthy cheapskate. And look how that turned out. Sony’s Jack Tretton joyfully trolled them for it at the time, though, much to the delight of a whooping, Jerry Springer crowd. And then Nintendo probably revealed some stuff, too, but who really cares about that?
So here’s why this year’s E3 will be the best one ever: Tretton recently stepped down as Sony president, Microsoft revoked all its DRM policies, and Nintendo need to prove the the Wii U is still relevant. In short, the dust has settled and all three are now more or less on the same next-gen playing field. So,...

ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this Tuesday night finally shed some light — a surgical light, specifically — on what exactly happened to Agent Coulson after he died prior to The Battle of New York.
Held captive by the Centipede gang, Coulson learned from a grunt named Po that he was valuable to their organization because while The Clairvoyant had been able to see his death, he could not see what happened thereafter, that resulted in his improbable resurrection.

Monks doing dark magic? Like, apparently proper Christian monks? Does Jack the Giant Slayer really open with a flashbacky introduction about how Christian monks -- who appear to worship the Christian God and believe in Heaven as a real place -- used a horrifically and literally visceral sorcery to create an enchanted crown that could be used to control and rule actual giants who live in the space between Heaven and Earth? That’s some pretty blasphemous stuff, if you believe in that sort of thing, and it’s pretty edgy and even approaching dangerous for a big-budget fantasy movie. (Note that Harry Potter, for instance, exists in a world that is as secular as its British setting and makes no mention at all of any religious or churchy stuff... and fundamentalists still get upset about it.) And that, alas, is the extent of the risks that Jack the Giant Slayer takes.

Ready for some more crazy Justice League movie news?! There are some really big awesome bits of information loaded here thanks to our friends at Latino-Review who, as you know, have a great track record for this kind of news.
Warner Bros. isn't saying anything, and they are keeping things on the down-low, but here are the big points that the site is reporting...
Christopher Nolan will be a producer on the movie to help steer it in the right direction like Man of Steel. He will also once again be working with Zack Snyder on cracking the story, and he might also be back to direct the film, which is something I've speculated on before. They go on to reveal that the studio is hoping to bring Christian Bale back as Batman, which would be absolutely amazing! The actor has said in the past that he'd be willing to...

Ok, DC fanboy nation. Here is the story you have been waiting for.
Over the weekend, on a cold Saturday afternoon, I went into Brooklyn to drop in on @da7e and shoot our latest video blog. We were looking for a comic book store to shoot in front of, but because of the sensitivity of the information, we didn’t want an overzealous fanboy spying on us as we shot and running away to leak our scoop on a forum or another site. DC headquarters located on 1700 Broadway was also out of the question because of the noise factor. So we went up to the rooftop and I think it worked out quite well.
After quite the difficult and lengthy investigation, we got to the bottom of what is going on with The Justice League. Warners is trying really hard to keep what’s going on under wraps because naturally,...

Die Hard star last appeared in a stage play in 1984, but says theatre 'seems like a more reasonable job, more manageable'
Yippee ki-yay, theatregoers: Bruce Willis has hinted that he's in the market for a return to the stage.
It's been close to 30 years since the 57-year-old Die Hard star last took on a stage role, but before he broke into Hollywood, Willis spent the best part of a decade working in theatre.
In 1977, aged 22, Willis secured his first professional role in an off-Broadway play called Heaven and Earth, having previously played Brick in Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof while still a student. He then spent several years working off-Broadway, four of them as the lead in Dennis Watlington's play Bullpen, before replacing Ed Harris as male lead in Sam Shepard's classic Fool for Love at the Douglas Fairbanks theatre.

Hong Kong – Chinese filmmakers from across generations and movie-making backgrounds have united in calling for an overhaul of Beijing’s much-maligned film censorship system, with most calling for the establishment of the internationally common system of classifying films in accordance to their suitability for audiences of different ages. Prominent directors such as Zhang Yuan (Beijing Bastards, Crazy English), Wang Xiaoshuai (Beijing Bicycle, 11 Flowers), Gao Qunshu (The Message, Golden Horse award-winner Beijing Blues), He Ping (Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Wheat) and Zhang Yang (Shower, Getting Home) have spoken out on Sina Weibo (China's version of Twitter) in support

Remember that piece of potentially huge box office news that turned out not to be true at all? You know, when it appeared that “Looper” had opened bigger in China than it did domestically? Well, we’re not quite there yet, but there’s certainly an increased trend of big movies making changes purely to target specific overseas markets. In some cases – as was the case for "Looper" – a different cut of the movie is released in a foreign territory which panders specifically to that market (and the financiers lending coin to the production). It looks like the next film to go down that route could be Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” which has just added a new cast member. Empire got a first look at images of Wang Xuequi in character as Dr. Lu in the new movie, who will be best known to Western audiences for roles...

Iron Man 3 has cast a new actor, and his name is Wang Xuequi. Who he? Well, he's the man set to play Dr. Lu in the upcoming superhero threequel, and if he's Tony Stark's doctor, he's a man worth knowing. Shown in the publicity snap above and the still below as some sort of surgeon – though if he is a surgeon, that would make him Mr. Lu, so that's... something – and from the looks of Rhodey and Pepper's faces, one that is set to reveal some pretty bad news from the Tony's-health-department.If you're wondering where you've seen Xuequi before, consider his work in Warriors Of Heaven And Earth and Bodyguards And Assassins. And before you ask, Dr. Lu is an original character written by director Shane Black just for the film and not one you can bone up on in an obscure Tales of Suspense issue, alas.After...

We open in a preschool, where a little kid has somehow managed to smear himself with lots of paint. The teacher jokingly scolds him about it, then takes him to the washroom to clean up.
Only, it isn’t a teacher, it’s a demon wearing a teacher meat-suit. Once the washroom door closes, a small freak tornado hits the school. The washroom door bangs open to reveal the teacher and the kid are missing.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the backwoods, Dean is breaking the 11th Commandment, “Thou shalt not Eat in the Car,” while rocking out to "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", when he spots a lone figure walking along the road.
The figure looks a lot like Cas, so Dean backs up and starts looking around to no avail.

We'll be shooting a video interview with the director tomorrow as he promotes his new film, Savages. But what should we ask him?
Oliver Stone's new film, Savages, offers a breakneck tour of the drug wars, pitting the hippie chancers of Laguna Beach against the badass professionals from south of the border. In the first camp we find the tie-dyed love triangle of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Blake Lively and Taylor Kitsch; in the second a gang of cut-throats headed by Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek. In the meantime, John Travolta's narcotics agent darts in and out of the action, on hand to keep the peace or pick the pockets, whatever comes easiest.
Adapted from the novel by Don Winslow, Savages is lush, garish and occasionally off its rocker, marking the director's return to the wild pulp-fiction landscape of Natural Born Killers, Midnight Express and Scarface. "After a decade...

The mind of a theoretical physicist must be a wonderful place. It can consider things that for me are only words, and will always be words. It can make play with multiple dimensions. It can contemplate black holes. It can not only theorize the existence of the Higgs boson, but can devise an experiment to find it--an experiment that succeeds. This has been called the God Particle, but the one thing it doesn't establish is the existence of God. It proves the existence of something that is capable of being observed by scientific experiment, and this something is said to account for the existence of matter.
Obviously you are not here today to learn anything useful from me about the Higgs boson. I am unqualified. What I am is a curious person who, like all thoughtful people possibly from the dawn of thought, have asked myself:
Why is there something instead of nothing?...

TheMoviePool delves into the ancient world of Greek mythology in Immortals, and tries to figure out if there's anything of value still left in this tired genre. Spoiler: No. No there is not.
The Basics:
I hardly even remember the plot of this movie, so here's the official synopsis:
In this epic tale of vengeance and destiny, power-mad King Hyperion threatens to destroy all of humanity on his maniacal quest to obtain the ultimate weapon – the legendary Epirus Bow that gives the power to unleash war on both Heaven and Earth. But Theseus, a heroic young villager chosen by the gods, rises up to stop Hyperion's brutal rampage. With supernatural help from the beautiful oracle Phaedra, Theseus embraces his destiny and leads a fierce band of warriors in a desperate fight for the future of mankind.

Before he slips on the red and blue tights and fights crime for truth, justice, and the American way, Henry Cavill picked up a bow and arrow provided by the Gods to do battle with Mickey Rourke in Tarsem Singh’s “Immortals”. The film boasts the tagline: “From the producers of 300″, and it’s certainly that, alright. Yes, the producers of “300″ also produced this, and yes, the film certainly looks and feels like “300″ at times, though it’s a bit more meandering in my opinion. Judge for yourself with the “Immortals” DVD/Blu-ray, now available from Universal Pictures. Immortals explodes off the screen with action-packed battles, mythological adventure and an all-star cast. New video game Asura's Wrath has been criticised for the way it depicts Hinduism.
In a statement issued to us today, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed said "such trivialising and reimagining" of revered symbols and concepts was upsetting for devotees.
Zed, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, based in Nevada, USA, said developers were welcome to use Hindu themes but the information should be based on the religions's actual ancient texts.
Rajan pointed out that Asura's Wrath shows Durga (who gets murdered) as the wife of Asura, while in Hinduism, Durga was one of the major deities, honoured as saviour of the world from evil, who destroyed buffalo-demon Mahisasura, a well-known asura.
Asura is portrayed as a hero in Asura's Wrath, which also features refashioned versions of Brahmastra (Brahma's weapon), Mantra (Vedic hymn) and Naraka (hell).
Zed argued that although freedom of expression is important, faith is sacred and should not be belittled.

The results are in! We asked readers to name their favorite TV characters of all time and thousands responded. This year, for the first time, we weren't just asking about favorite gay TV characters. Folks could vote for characters of either gender - and all persuasions. Of course, this being AfterElton we expected gay characters to figure prominently on this list - and they do - but it is interesting to see what female and straight TV roles also resonated with the AfterElton readership.
Before we get to the actual rankings, here are a few statistics.
First, the top fifty came from a broad range of TV shows. Thirty programs were represented, and the two that made the best showing (Glee and Modern Family) placed only four characters each in the rankings.
Second, female characters nabbed 15 of the top 50 spots, or 30%.

Much like 300, the flick Immortals is one of those movies that just make your manhood feel a bit heavier while watching. Theatres should have served steaks and beers instead of popcorn and soda! That's okay, though, since the flick is coming home and you can eat as many t-bones as you like while watching.

With his patented hangdog stare, Rufus Sewell may look a little demonic, but he often plays characters who end up on the side of angels, such as his star-making turns in projects like "Dark City" and "Middlemarch." So which side is he going to take in the upcoming adaptation of "Paradise Lost?"
How about both?
According to Variety, Sewell has signed on to "Paradise Lost," where he will play the sinister archangel Samael. Talk about hedging your bets.
Based on the classic epic poem by John Milton, "Paradise Lost" stars Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, a no-goodnik who messes up both Heaven and Earth and becomes Satan in the process. Forty years ago my main regular writing spot was a weekly page of general commentary on the arts for the New Statesman, and due to the current discussion provoked by Julian Barnes's The Sense of an Ending and the appearance of Rod Lurie's 40th anniversary remake of Straw Dogs, two of the items in the column of 2 December 1971 have a certain topical interest. One is about the third winner of the Booker prize, of which I observed: "Vs Naipaul's In a Free State is a splendid book but is it, as the Booker conditions demand, a full-length novel?"
The other is about a film that had opened the previous week: "I was at the press show for Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, and rarely have I experienced such a palpable sense of shock and disgust sweep through an audience. Peckinpah is an artist I admire immensely and I wouldn't want to ban his film,...
