Kelly LeBrock had pretty much retired from acting at the time this movie was made and only did it as a favor for her husband. In retrospect she calls the movie "Hard to Watch" or "Hard to Believe."
Steven Seagal did not get along with Bruce Malmuth and considered him to be a very poor director, stating in a 1990 interview "I think it's a miracle that this guy can put one foot in front of the other." Chief among Seagal's complaints included dissatisfaction with filming the action scenes and being excluded from the editing process.
Warner Bros. demanded the movie be heavily cut and re-edited down to a 90 minute run time in order to be more straightforward, fast paced, and to have more theatrical screenings. Some scenes were cut while others, including parts of the plot, were deleted, which is why the movie suffers from bad editing at times. Some of the scenes which were deleted during re-editing include: an original opening scene between Storm and his wife and son, Trent's men interrogating and killing Andy's black nurse friend, a scene where Storm's son Sonny is kidnapped by Trent's men but manages to escape, O'Malley's funeral, and more dialogue between characters in many other scenes. Reportedly, an alternate ending was also filmed where Storm kills Trent and says "Take that to the bank." Storm is shown saying this line in the theatrical trailer, which indicates that there was indeed this alternate ending. The same types of re-editing also happened to other Steven Seagal movies that he made for Warner Bros.
Was filmed and publicized in several trade magazines with the title "Seven Year Storm." Warner Bros. decided to retitle the finished movie as "Hard to Kill" to make it sound more like a slam-bang action film.
