The Indian theatrical release of “Santosh,” which landed on the Oscars’ international feature shortlist, has been delayed due to an unexpected holdup at India’s Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc).
The film, which was directed by Sandhya Suri and was the U.K. entry to the Oscars’ international feature category, was acquired by PVR Inox Pictures in December.
Currently on release in Los Angeles, the movie follows Santosh, a widow who inherits her deceased husband’s position as a police constable in rural north India. The narrative centers on her involvement in investigating the murder of an underage girl from a marginalized caste community, alongside a feminist police inspector named Sharma.
The Jan. 10 release was suspended after the film failed to receive certification clearance, despite having previously secured script approval to shoot in India and Indian government production incentives. The production team is currently awaiting detailed feedback regarding the Cbfc’s concerns.

It’s safe to say the Elsbeth promotors are trying to pull a fast one on its loyal fan base with a promo we know doesn’t begin to scratch the surface. Then again, how could it with a guest appearance from Laurie Metcalf?
If you’re like this TV Fanatic, you were fully expecting some hint of what’s to come from the titular character’s new rival and most significant threat, Judge Milton.
Only a show like Elsbeth could pair a wife and husband for some of the juiciest developments on a show already brimming with quality writing and acting.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
At least viewers never have to worry about things going stale or the comedy falling flat. Especially not when they’re bringing in broadcast TV vets known for their perfect comedic timing.

It will be a family affair in the next episode of Elsbeth. It’s excellent news for Carrie Preston because who doesn’t love working with their spouse, especially on a show as fun as Elsbeth?
That’s right. Everyone’s favorite psycho from Evil, Michael Emerson, is bringing his cold, dead smile to the courtroom. CBS sure does like to keep everything in the Paramount family.
Preston and Emerson are best known for their roles on shows like Elsbeth and Evil, which are not only Paramount+ residents but stem from the same showrunners.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
I wasn’t kidding when I called this episode a family affair. Both series have showrunners and married couple Robert and Michelle King’s hands working behind the scenes.
So, with two married couples in front and behind the camera, there’s bound to be a ridiculous amount of entertaining chemistry. Plus, don...

It seems safe to say that Miss Matlock has herself a nice pair of brass cojones underneath that unsuspecting septuagenarian act. That’s definitely a good sign after the last episode.
It’s no wonder Kathy Bates got her ninth Golden Globe nomination for her role as Matty. “Belly of the Beast” really showed why Bates was the absolute best choice for the part.
Now that Madeline Matlock has everything she needs with Senior’s laptop, it’s only a matter of time until the truth comes out.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
I’d like to remind everyone that the series’ creator has vehemently said that the big mystery will be wrapped up nicely by the end of Matlock Season 1.

It’s beginning to look a lot like homicide — I mean, Christmas on Elsbeth. This holiday season, snow won’t be the only thing falling around here. Get your ugly Christmas sweater on because it’s a special Elsbeth holiday episode.
You may have to watch the promo for “Gold, Frankincense, and Murder” to understand the reference above. Don’t worry because we are going to unpack what could be the campiest episode of the season.
That being said, Elsbeth has enough quirkiness for two shows. Couple that with some holiday cheer, and you have some certified yuletide mayhem.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
It may be the happiest time of the year, but let’s not forget the crowds, alcohol consumption, desperation, gift-giving pressure, emotional instability, and homes left vacant.

Tis the season for gift giving, but all Matlock has under her tree this year is beautifully wrapped revenge. And you already know she is going to use the extra fancy kind of ribbon.
Despite a lapse in faith during “Sixteen Steps,” it looks like Madeline will, in fact, keep her day job. That’s a fun parallel to Kathy Bates, who everyone thought was retiring after this show.
Luckily, neither was true. In the Matlock Season 1 Episode 7 promo, Madeline has her groove back and is ready to spread a little holiday cheer.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
It’s been a long time coming, but Matty definitely has something big planned for Jacobson Moore this season, and I’m not talking about the holidays. Although this is a great time to rewatch Kathy Bates as Mother Clause in Fred Clause alongside Vince Vaughn.

Lord, take us to church because it looks like NCIS: Origins’ golden boy, Randy, is about to drop the nice guy act. Everyone reacts to religion in their own way.
Many viewers have been curious about other characters on the show, with Randy being a top contender. While we’d love to know what is going on with Lala, there’s always time for the sweetest guy at the Nis.
NCIS: Origins will be taking audiences to Sunday service in “Sick as Our Secrets.” That’s quite the episode title to go with, and it invokes some pretty intense possibilities.
(Erik Voake/CBS)
At this point in the series, viewers can expect each episode to feature multiple heart-wrenching scenes from one character or another.
So, stock up on the Kleenex because I doubt NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 8 will be any different.
One thing that can definitely be said about NCIS: Origins...

John Krasinski has been a small-screen staple for multiple decades now.
But we’re used to watching him portray unassuming good guys like Jim Halpert or heroic badasses like Jack Ryan.
Now, it seems that we might be on the verge of seeing 2024’s Sexiest Man Alive in a very different light.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Krasinski has signed on to join The Americans and Perry Mason star Matthew Rhys in a new serial killer drama for Prime Video.
Both actors will also serve as executive producers on Silent River, which does not yet have a release date.
The details of their roles are unclear at the moment, but we know that the Krasinski and Rhys “will play two men whose lives are more connected than they realize.”

“Leave them alone.” That’s what Jared Harris, the “Mad Men,” “The Crown,” and Chernobyl star thinks about the original Harry Potter films.
The twice Emmy-nominated actor is, of course, the son of the late actor and singer Richard Harris (and brother to director Damian Harris and actor Jamie Harris). Richard played Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films before he died. For the later films, Richard was replaced by Michael Gambon.
With HBO planning a reboot of the J.K. Rowling series for television, teasing a more detailed adaptation of the beloved books, The Independent asked Jared Harris if he had any interest in taking on the role initially played by his father.
Not only did he bat that away with a “no, thank you,” he said something that Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders maybe do not want to hear: “Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand.

The U.K. has selected Santosh, an Indian police procedural from director Sandhya Suri, to represent the country in the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature category.
Shahana Goswami stars as the titular Santosh, a driven young Hindu widow who inherits her husband’s job as a police constable thanks to a government scheme. She finds herself caught up in institutional corruption even as she warms to working with rough-edged veteran detective Inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar) on a brutal murder case involving a teenage girl from the lower caste Dalit community.
Santosh premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section this year, where it was quickly snatched up for North America by Metrograph Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review called the feature “gripping and engrossing” singling out Suri’s screenplay for praise. “Instead of unwieldy expository dialogue, Suri relies on conversations between Santosh and Sharma to shed light on the forces — a discriminatory society,...

In previous episodes of The Best Movie You Never Saw, I’ve talked a little bit about how much I like the eighties and nineties actor Tom Berenger. From Platoon through Shoot to Kill and The Substitute, he was a great character actor with some serious action chops. Were he to have come along in another era, he could have easily been an action star in the vein of Liam Neeson or Gerard Butler, but in his heyday, audiences seemed to prefer larger-than-life heroes. Yet, some of his movies proved to be modestly successful, and one of the more intruding examples is the 1993 movie Sniper, which is probably the best movie you ever saw that got nine sequels.

Living a fulfilling life and enjoying a decorated career with classics like Camelot and The Field, Richard Harris certainly left behind a legacy to remember him by. But while most of his films turned him into a veteran star, it was the Harry Potter franchise that made him popular among modern audiences.
Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore | Warner Bros.
However, despite the potential of the films, given the popularity of J.K Rowling’s novels, Richard Harris was initially reluctant to take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. At the age of 70, Harris was unwilling to commit to a franchise that would demand his involvement in multiple sequels. But things surprisingly changed after he faced a literal threat.

Fallout 4's cut May-Pole creature was a missed opportunity for a terrifying miniboss encounter. The May-Pole was envisioned as a 300-foot tall Glowing One. The May-Pole could have added unique challenges with feral ghouls and fire-themed abilities.
Fallout 4 has a handful of challenging enemies around the Commonwealth, but one terrifying cut creature with an interesting backstory would've raised the bar. Fallout 4 was the first game in the franchise to move to a more modern combat system, and while that made it more engaging, it also raised the difficulty. Without proper preparation, some of the strongest enemies, like Mirelurk Queens or Deathclaws can be long and frustrating encounters. Regardless, these larger fights are some of the most memorable events throughout the game.
The best way to be prepared for these encounters is with armor and weaponry. The T-60 or X0-1 power armor are the best options for defense as...

Metrograph Pictures has acquired North American rights to Sandhya Suri’s Cannes standout “Santosh” following its world premiere in Un Certain Regard.
Metrograph Pictures will distribute the film theatrically, with additional release details to be announced at a later date. MK2 Films represents the movie in international markets.
“Santosh” marks the narrative feature debut of Suri, whose breakout documentary “I For India” competed at Sundance. Her short film “The Field” was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Short Film in 2019, and won Best International Short at Toronto in 2018.
“Santosh” received strong reviews following its Cannes premiere, with Variety called it a “whip-smart film” that “speaks the language of a fiercely feminist empowerment saga”.

Sandhya Suri’s fiction feature debut “Santosh,” which bows in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard strand, has unveiled its first clip.
In the film, a government scheme sees newly widowed Santosh inherit her slain husband’s job as a police constable in the rural badlands of northern India. When an underage girl from one of India’s so-called “lower castes” is murdered, Santosh is pulled into the investigation by charismatic feminist inspector Sharma.
Suri is known for her documentaries “I for India” (2005), which bowed at Sundance, and “Around India with a Movie Camera” (2018) and Toronto-winning and BAFTA nominated fiction short “The Field” (2018). The “Santosh” script, which predates “The Field,” participated in the Sundance lab. “I was researching things about violence against women and trying to make a sort of anatomy of a violence and I couldn’t find a way to do it in documentary. So I found this way into fiction,...

Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Upscale crossover sales agent Latido Films has acquired international sales rights to “Re-creation,” directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, whose “In the Name of the Father” won a Berlin Golden Bear in 1994.
Starring Vicky Krieps, a Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner for “Corsage,” the docu-drama is co-written and co-directed by Irish artist and filmmaker David Merriman (“Rock Against Homelessness”). It will be unveiled to buyers at the European Film Market.
Like Sheridan’s prior five-hour documentary, SkyCrime’s “Murder at the Cottage,” “Re-creation” turns on what the earlier title calls Ireland’s most shocking unresolved crime whose victim, French TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was battered to death at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.
A fiction/reality hybrid feature, “Re-creation” introduces a fictional jury, inspired by Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men,” which sifts through the facts, lies and convenient truths behind the murder, Sheridan told Variety.

After over 30 years of meeting his maker, Sean Bean is looking back on his first onscreen death in the historical drama Caravaggio and his infamous trend of dying. Though having found larger success with the British war drama series Sharpe, Bean made his acting debut with the British procedural series The Bill and Caravaggio. The English actor has since become a household name thanks to his roles in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Pierce Brosnan's first James Bond movie GoldenEye and HBO's Game of Thrones, all of which shared one unique element for the actor.

The streaming service has ordered An Interview with Brian Cox for its U.S. and Canada services, an hour-long sit-down with the actor delving into his life and career.
The special, from QuigleyFilm, is an extended version of a BBC interview that aired last year. That marked the first time Cox had gone into such detail about his family and lengthy career in showbiz.
“From his early years in Scotland and Shakespearean beginnings to his contemporary roles across film and television, no stone is unturned in this heartfelt interview with the iconic actor,” according to BritBox International.

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”). Butler (69/20) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Fraser (71/20), Farrell (4/1), Nighy (9/2), and Mescal (9/2).

In his bold 1990 interpretation of Luigi Pirandello’s “Henry IV,” the late and legendary Irish stage, screen and music star Richard Harris utters the immortal lines, “Woe to him who doesn’t know how to wear his mask.”
Even before his breathtaking big-screen triumph 60 years ago as the rugby ruffian Frank Machin in Lindsay Anderson’s film directing debut, “This Sporting Life,” Harris proved adept at juggling personal and professional personas. The word “legendary” gets tossed around pretty easily when discussing important actors, but there’s a huge difference between starring in a lot of important movies, and starring in a lot of movies while leaving everyone you ever met with an epic, semi-fantastical tale about how incredibly drunk you got.
Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Adrian Sibley’s documentary “The Ghost of Richard Harris” tells the story of — you guessed it — Richard Harris, but also his ghost. The Irish actor, musician and poet who starred in films like “This Sporting Life,” “The Field,” “Gladiator” and two “Harry Potter” entries led an extraordinary existence that’s well worth recording for posterity. And in his wake, he left behind three sons who barely knew their real father, and who seek in his absence a little bit of understanding and maybe some closure.

Though it sets out on a ghost hunt, Adrian Sibley’s fitfully fascinating documentary works better as an exploration of its subject’s public and private personas, charting Richard Harris’ rise from local sports star to screen legend via an unexpected heyday as a chart-topping pop star in 1968.
Rather than start with a séance, however, The Ghost of Richard Harris, screening in the Classics section of the Venice Film Festival, opens with the more prosaic sight of the actor’s three sons — Damien, Jared and Jamie — going through their late mother’s lock-up, where they find journals full of poetry, King Arthur’s crown (a prop from 1967’s Camelot) and trinkets from the Harry Potter franchise, in which their father played Dumbledore until his death in 2002, aged 72.
This set-up proves to be somewhat self-defeating, as the three middle-aged men, while reminiscing, then admit that they were packed away to boarding...

Challenges are plentiful when making a short film, says A.M. Lukas, whose short “One Cambodian Family Please for My Pleasure” was selected as a finalist at TheWrap’s 2019 ShortList Film Festival. What matters is how you handle those challenges — a lesson she learned first-hand.
“I had $80,000 and then I lost it; I had Emily Mortimer, and I was about to get on the plane to Fargo, and then we lost Emily; and then we got Emily back. So it was just completely insane every step of the way,” Lukas said in a panel with other ShortList filmmakers Thursday night at the W Hotel Hollywood. You can watch a video clip above of the conversation moderated by TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond.
“It’s letting it all happen and then solving each problem,” Lukas said, sharing wise advice from “The Graduate” director Mike Nichols. “You can never know what the film is actually gonna be.

Sandhya Suri, director of “The Field,” had a unique strategy for shooting the key postcoital conversation between two lovers in a darkened corn field of Shahzadpur, India, mid-harvest: The pair’s dialogue was recorded before shooting officially began on the short film — and away from the crew.
“You have to be very careful shooting a scene like that,” Suri told TheWrap. “I wanted the lovers to feel really comfortable and have a lot of space.”
For Suri, the imagery of two illicit lovers in a field fomented the story that ultimately became “The Field,” her first fiction short film and a finalist in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival. But she also wanted to create a work that allowed a woman to claim her desire and rejected stereotypical depictions of Indian women as the victims of domestic abuse and violence.
