Hollywood and Botox have been inseparable for years, and despite the rise of Ozempic, the industry isn’t likely to forget its old friend. Celebrities are frequently accused of using fillers all because of their unnaturally frozen expressions and facial features, especially under the spotlight of red carpets and flashing cameras or based on one bad picture when they are out and about.

Tom Cruise could’ve played gangster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s epic gangster film Goodfellas. Cruise was, at one point, considered for the role that eventually went to Ray Liotta. The Mission: Impossible actor worked with Scorsese in the film, The Color of Money, in 1986. Interestingly, the filmmakers tried to pair Cruise with Madonna in this film.

Liotta constantly campaigned for a role in Goodfellas after reading the source material, Nicholas Pileggi’s novel Wiseguy, when it was released. He managed to win over both Scorsese and producer Irwin Winkler, beating other famous actors in the process. Goodfellas, one of the greatest films in film history, was snubbed at the Oscars in a major way.

Looking at Kevin Costner’s filmography as a director, one thing is apparent: the guy loves his epics. His debut, 1990’s Dances with Wolves, clocked in at just over three hours, while his 1997 follow-up, The Postman, ran just under that. After practically making a short film with Open Range (139 minutes), he took a two-decade break before diving into his next: the multi-part Horizon, with its first two parts surpassing the six-hour mark. So what drives Kevin Costner to make such lengthy movies? It comes down to the classics.
At History Channel’s recent History Talks event (via Deadline), Kevin Costner said it was seeing movies of an epic scale that not only captured his curiosity for film but also subconsciously made him lean towards movies of such lengthy runtimes. In particular, he cited 1962’s How the West Was Won, which credits three directors – Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall...

John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

Few filmmakers have had a profound impact on the world of movies as the legendary co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki. His films have captivated global audiences with their imaginative stories, beautiful animation, and complex themes. Among Miyazaki’s films, the 1997 classic Mononoke Hime Aka Princess Mononoke, stands out for its rich exploration of the theme of environmentalism.
Not only did it redefine anime storytelling in Japan, but it also inspired one of the highest-grossing films of all time: James Cameron’s Avatar. With a franchise valued at over $5.2 billion, Avatar owes much of its thematic and narrative inspiration to Princess Mononoke.

Kevin Costner is one of the most critically acclaimed and respected actors in Hollywood. For years, he has been at the forefront of media, through works like Dances with Wolves, Yellowstone, and most recently, his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Unfortunately for him, the latter of the bunch became quite a disappointing venture for him.

Kevin Costner’s magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga seems to be in limbo after the first chapter of the four-part film bombed at the box office. Costner directed and financed the films himself, selling part of his estate to fund the $100 million budget. The first film, which was released in June only managed to earn $36 million.
Costner’s directorial reportedly came at the cost of his successful neo-Western TV show Yellowstone, which after clashes with creator Taylor Sheridan and the studio, he exited. While Costner has been a master of the Western genre, he seems to have fumbled with Horizon in one place where Yellowstone succeeded.

Just a few months after the first three-hour installment of Kevin Costner’s legacy project had its lackluster premiere at Cannes, his second slab of Western fudge has launched in Venice. There are more snow-topped mountains in Montana, more bars bathed in golden gaslight, more shoot-outs, more lines of wagons moving ever westward ho. Costner obviously loves classic Westerns, including his own — he allows himself a callback to Wyatt Earp — and these are all treasurable, time-honored motifs of the genre. Piling them high over hours and hours does not, however, mean that the result will be all the more classically magnificent. It just means there will be a lot of it, whatever it is.
What it is, unfortunately, is a collection of anecdotes lying side by side, never cohering — so far, anyway — into the comprehensive panorama of the turbulent making of America that Costner and his co-writer, John Baird, must have envisaged.

Winning a total of seven Academy Awards for his 1990 Western film, Dances With Wolves, including for Best Director against acclaimed filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Kevin Costner has since been hailed as one of the greatest filmmakers in the industry. However, the ill-fated Horizon Saga has cast doubts on the enduring brilliance.

As the epic Western saga fails to capture the same magic, it has raised questions about whether his directorial prowess was perhaps overestimated, with the actor lacking any substantial recognition from Academy Awards even 34 years after the release of Dances With Wolves.

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is the latest installment in writer-director-star Kevin Costner’s planned four-part film series, which opened in the U.S. this past July to many poor reviews, bemused viewer reaction and disappointing box office numbers.
This second three-hour tranche of Wild West-themed soap-operatic drama, premiering at Venice, has basically the same problems as its predecessor: too much setup and not enough payoff; jagged editing that only highlights the lack of harmony between its disparate narrative strands; and cliché-tinged production values that often make it feel corny and old-fashioned, and not in a good way. And that’s allowing for the assumption that it’s aimed at the geriatric market who loved Costner’s pseudo-revisionist Western blockbuster Dances With Wolves back in the day and his return turn to Western-adjacent form with recent TV hit Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner is now known for his role in the neo-Western Yellowstone. However, the legendary actor has had a rollercoaster of a career since the ‘80s and the ‘90s. From his iconic role in the sports drama Field of Dreams to his disastrous magnum opus Waterworld, Costner has seen it all.

Our top streaming pick this week, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s spiritual sequel to his seven-time Oscar winner “Dances With Wolves.” The awards chances for “Horizon” look dimmer than “Dances,” though, especially after the passion project flopped in theaters.
The film is a Western epic following the arduous journeys of settlers and outlaws as they try to reach the frontier town of Horizon. In addition to Costner, who plays a stoic horse trader named Hayes Ellison, the sprawling cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, and Luke Wilson, among many others. The release of in-the-can second part has been postponed indefinitely, but now that “Chapter 1” can potentially gin up some interest with its streaming release on Max, maybe “Chapter 2” will get a new date soon.

The film hits streaming following its Cannes premiere and June 28 theatrical debut, which was regarded as a misfire for a big-budget title, at a gross of just over $34 million. While Warner Bros initially intended to release Chapter 2 just two months later, on August 16 — in an unusual move — the sequel’s release has since been delayed for an indefinite period, the hope being to give audiences who have not yet caught up with Chapter 1 a chance to do so. Chapter 2 will screen out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 7, with Chapter 1 playing there earlier in the day.

Clint Eastwood brought back Westerns to the mainstream after Dances with Wolves, with his Best Picture-winning directorial Unforgiven. Starring and directing the Western, Eastwood also had an ensemble cast of brilliant supporting actors, with an in-form Gene Hackman giving an Oscar-winning performance.
Hackman’s Little Bill has been regarded as one of the greatest villains in Hollywood history and his ruthlessness while also being a protector has been appreciated. If you haven’t jumped on the Yellowstone bandwagon yet, what are you waiting for? This show is hotter than a pistol in a cowboy’s holster on a scorching summer day. The mastermind orchestrating this remarkable success is none other than co-creator Taylor Sheridan, a man whose touch has turned not just Yellowstone but also its numerous spin-offs into gold.

As Sheridan’s producing partner, David Glasser put it, the former’s commitment and dedication shine through in every project he undertakes, ensuring that his word truly is his bond.

Kevin Costner appeared in one of his most controversial roles as New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison in JFK. The film came from Oliver Stone who was having a pretty great repertoire in the ’80s and ’90s. Despite the success of the film, the controversy surrounding the film gave Stone the image of a conspiracy theorist.

Have you ever witnessed the resurrection of an age-old rivalry play out in a high-stakes drama? Well, Taylor Sheridan’s new Yellowstone spin-off seems to sprinkle a dash of salt on Kevin Costner’s wound with a blast from the past.
So, the spin-off, previously known as 2024 but now tentatively dubbed The Madison, has reportedly roped in Hollywood heavy-hitters: Michelle Pfeiffer, and Patrick J. Adams. Did we forget to mention that the series is also eying one of Costner’s biggest rivals from the ‘90s: none other than Kurt Russell?

Kevin Costner took on the role of real-life attorney Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s JFK. Like other movies from Stone, this film also raised several questions about the political landscape of the country at the time, making it a controversial project. Costner’s Western roles, be it Dances with Wolves, Yellowstone, or Horizon, weren’t nearly as sharp or controversial as JFK.

This may be painful, but prior to Taylor Sheridan’s arrival as a storyteller, the Western genre’s heartbeat was growing faint; its glory days were a mere echo in Hollywood’s canyon. Who would have dared to dream that a movie could really spur a renaissance and bring the Western back to the forefront of American culture, reminding us all of the thrill of the untamed land?

"Tombstone" may now be considered one of the most beloved Westerns of the late twentieth century, but the film had an incredibly rocky path from the page to the big screen. "Tombstone" was intended to be the directorial debut of "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre, but when he fell behind schedule a month into the shoot, producer Andrew Vajna fired him and brought in veteran helmer George P. Cosmatos ("Rambo: First Blood Part II" and "Leviathan") to ostensibly drag the movie to the finish line.
We've since learned that, after Jarre's departure, the driving creative force on "Tombstone" was star Kurt Russell. Cast as legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, Russell brought a semblance of order to the wayward production by streamlining the lengthy screenplay with producer Jim Jacks. His instincts proved plenty sharp. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available on VOD. There’s no way around it – the film’s theatrical release was a huge disappointment, as it earned back only a fraction of its reported budget and has put the release of the second film in major jeopardy. However, now that it’s streaming, the hope is that people will be able to discover it at home, perhaps paving the way for this saga to continue. If you’ve watched Horizon and are jonesing for more modern westerns to check out, here are some we really like here at JoBlo.

The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)
Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Twisters isn't an announced remake of Jan de Bont's 1996 cow-chucker Twister, but it kinda is? Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) honors the beloved storm-chasing picture by borrowing plot milestones for his blustery "continuation," yet it's hardly a copycat. Twisters is an exhilarating summer blockbuster with plenty of giddyup, trading Van Halen needle drops for buckin' Wild West rambunctiousness. Chung's breathtaking intimacy as a storyteller never sacrifices the adrenalized thrills found in life-threatening tornado hunts, swirling together rapturous disaster sequences with adventurous mavericks who yee-haw their way into our hearts. It's hands-down one of the 2024's champion titles so far, meant to be experienced on a gigantic theater screen.
The film's setups are familiar, but new characters hardly make for a stale Twister regurgitation. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, the New York City meteorologist called back into action five years after tragedy strikes in the field. Kate's former colleague...

It's the first in a planned four-film saga, with Warner Bros. set to release "Chapter 2" in mere weeks on August 16. Unfortunately, in the early going, this experiment has not panned out financially.
Opening against "A Quiet Place: Day One," the first installment in Costner's new franchise was buried. "Horizon" opened to a mere $11 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts for the weekend, scarcely above "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" ($10.3 million), which was in its fourth weekend of release. It certainly doesn't help that "Inside Out 2" has remained a juggernaut, passing $1 billion worldwide...

After decades of planning and dreaming, Kevin Costner finally got to make his ultimate magnum opus, the Horizon: An American Saga movie series. The first movie is out now, the second one is coming soon, and the third one is already filming: there’s no stopping Costner now. But Chapter 1 has been received rather… Ambiguously so far.
In that light, let’s see how Kevin Costner’s previous (iconic) Western movies did, and how they compare to his new outing.
Costner Began Gunslinging in the 20th Century
Kevin Costner’s first serious Western movie was 1985’s Silverado directed by Lawrence Kasdan. The movie followed a group of misfit friends who decided to fix the issues of a small town which, of course, involved a bunch of gunfights. Silverado was reasonably loved, with 78 and 80% Critic and Audience Scores on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2/10 on IMDb.
His second Western became an instant classic.

The fifth season of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone — made famous in no small part because of its lead star Kevin Costner — enjoyed the top scripted series premiere of 2022 with 12.1 million viewers. Just as impressive, the show saw double-digit gains in all demos, including a growth of 52 percent among adults 18-34 for a cumulative rating of 5.6 among adults between ages 18-49, or 7 million viewers. And it averaged 11.5 million viewers for season five over seven days of viewing.
So where were all those millions of Yellowstone fans over the June 28-30 weekend when Costner’s big-budget movie Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One rode into more than 4,000 theaters across North America? Most were a no-show for the film, which Costner, co-wrote, directed and stars in.
The movie opened to just $11 million, a dismal start for an event title that cost $100 million to produce. In terms of headcount, that means roughly 1 million people turned out,...

There is perhaps no genre more American than the Western. Stories of cowboys and the Wild West have captured the screen since the dawn of cinema. The Western has been buried dozens of times in its century-long existence, but each time it has pulled itself out, desperately refusing to die.
Horizon is Kevin Costner's Dream Project
At the end of the last century, we almost witnessed the final death of the genre, but first Kevin Costner's Dances With Wolves and then Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven revived the genre not only for the viewers, but also for the Academy – Dances With Wolves won seven Oscars and Unforgiven won four.
Both Costner and Eastwood, the main cowboys of modern cinema, are still in business. And while the latter is hard at work on his latest film, the former has completed his dream project for which he left one of the most popular series of recent years,...
