Updated with White House comment: Amber Ruffin will be the featured entertainer at the next White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, scheduled for April 26.
“When I began to think about what entertainer would be a perfect fit for the dinner this year, Amber was immediately at the top of my list,” Politico’s Eugene Daniels, president of the association, said Wednesday.
He added, “She has the ability to walk the line between blistering commentary and humor all while provoking her audience to think about the important issues of the day. I’m thrilled and honored she said yes.”
The big question is whether President Donald Trump will attend the dinner, held at the Washington Hilton. He skipped the event in each of the four years of his term, but Joe Biden returned the tradition of presidential attendance.
“Definitely an interesting choice of the comedian,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters today.

Neil Cavuto held forth at 4 p.m. on Fox News Channel from a New York studio for more than a quarter century, a veteran newscaster who was never afraid to call balls and strikes. His successor, Will Cain, will lead the hour from a decidedly different venue for cable-news — Dallas, Texas — and probably take a few swings.
“The Will Cain Show” debuts Tuesday at 4 p.m. eastern with what is likely to be a decidedly different look. Fox News has said the program will carry “a signature podcast style,” and Cain acknowledges people looking for the usual cable-news trappings may see something different. “It’s not a sermon, it’s a conversation,” he says of the format, adding: “There’s not the pretense of perfection. Nothing that I have to say is the word of God. I’m on the ride with everyone else in pursuit of the truth.”

Roy Wood Jr. believes that civilization is doomed if we don’t find a way back to social normalcy.
In a recent interview with TheWrap, the former “Daily Show” correspondent explained why he decided to start off his new Hulu comedy special “Lonely Flowers” with a despairing statement about modern society’s lack of connection — a theme he digs into through his work onstage.
“I enjoy the idea of starting with a joke before saying hello, but I kind of also wanted to almost state the thesis of the paper before presenting my work,” Wood, who kicked off the the special with “We ain’t gon’ make it,” told TheWrap. “I feel like, if we remain in the same state that we’re in as a society, we’re not going to make it, it’s only going to get worse. Roy Wood Jr.’s new Hulu stand-up special is his best yet. But a lot of viewers may incorrectly believe it’s his first. The 46-year-old comic is well aware of this fact as he speaks on the phone from New York.
“(My new) comedy special is probably going to be seen by far more people than my first three were on Comedy Central,” he tells me. “That’s not a knock, it’s just the metrics of Hulu and the reach of Hulu globally. Roy Wood Jr. jokes about the changing demands of modern life, from dating to customer service, in the official trailer for his Hulu stand-up comedy special Lonely Flowers, set to debut Jan. 17.
“I was at the gun range and I saw somebody get bad service — at the gun range! How you going to be rude to somebody who showed up to practice murder?” Wood Jr. said in the teaser that dropped on Tuesday.
“We ain’t going to make it,” he declared at one point, as the former Daily Show correspondent, now hosting CNN’s Have I Got News for You, also poked fun at the loss of human connection in today’s digital-centric society. “The only time you see an employee at the grocery store is when you do self-checkout wrong: ‘What you done to the machine? Diplo stunned CNN’s New Year’s Eve hosts Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper Tuesday night when he revealed he was on LSD “right now” during a live virtual interview from Los Angeles.
The DJ (aka Thomas Wesley Pentz) who hosted a New Year’s Eve show at the Avalon in Hollywood, seemed unfazed at the co-hosts responses.
“I’m so curious. What’s the most conventional place that you’ve done LSD?” Cohen asked Diplo.
“Right now. I did some on the helicopter on the way here,” the DJ said with a smile.
A shocked Cohen shouted, “Right now?!” while Cooper — who had been doing shots of tequila all night — doubled over laughing.

Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper took to New York City’s Times Square, as per tradition, on Tuesday night (December 31) to host the festivities for CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live. And, as expected, things got wild. The hosts kicked things off by taking a shot of tequila each, with Cohen telling his reluctant cohost that they’d be taking a shot at the top of each hour. Cooper grew increasingly disgusted throughout the night as he knocked back shot after shot and struggled to keep them down. One person who didn’t partake in the shot drinking was comedian Roy Wood Jr., who joined Cohen and Cooper alongside his Have I Got News For You costars, Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin. “The last Black man to drink on this network got fired” – Roy Wood Jr on #Cnnnye pic.twitter.com/4rh4yo8CZ2 — philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) January 1, 2025 “Oh no…...

“Oh, no! No, I don’t,” Daily Show alum said before quipping, “The last Black man that drank on this network got fired. I’m going to keep it with water for right now. I need some stability.”
The New Year’s Eve Live co-hosts disregarded his comment and proceeded to pour a shot for Black and Ruffin.

Roy Wood Jr cracked a joke about Don Lemon being fired from CNN during the CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live 2025 special on Tuesday night (December 31).
The 46-year-old actor and comedian appeared alongside hosts Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper, as well as his Have I Got News For You co-stars Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black.
Andy and Anderson have once again continued their drinking traditions during the telecast, with the Bravo host offering the group shots of tequila.
However, Roy turned it down and made a joke about former co-host Don Lemon getting fired last year.

Roy Wood Jr. was extra cautious while appearing on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen and refused to drink alcohol.

Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper quickly jumped into their old rapport during CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live” on Tuesday, with the two hosts and real-life BFFs teasing each other and breaking out the booze.
Cohen excitedly brought tequila to take a shot at the top of every hour with Cooper. While Cooper, a light drinker, took the first shot in stride, the second one left him gasping for air.
The hosts remained jovial during the show, talking about having giggle fits during commercial breaks and FaceTiming with Hoda Kotb, who was hosting NBC’s New Year’s Eve special, “A Toast to 2024.”
A silly second-hour costume contest, set in front of the duo’s Madame Tussauds wax figures, featured a series of 2024 pop culture get-ups — including pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng, viral French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati and a sad Glasgow Oompa Loompa — which left Cooper in a fit of giggles.

The pair have struck a scripted co-development partnership for How to be a Sensei, which is being penned by Itaru Mizuno, the multiple Asian Academy Creative Award-winning director behind 2023’s breakout hit Rebooting, alongside award-wining British comedy writer Zoë Tomalin, who writes for the likes of Have I Got News For You and Hypothetical.
In How to be a Sensei, the protagonist takes her manga quest to Tokyo, where she heads to several iconic and underground locations. The series of hour-long episodes are in advanced development following a writing room that was recently held in the Japanese capital.

Amber Ruffin did not need to be convinced to join CNN’s new comedy-news talk series “Have I Got News for You.” In fact, her role on the show — which is to joke about the news with Roy Wood Jr. and Michael Ian Black — is what she says she’d be doing anyway. So why not spend her Fridays talking about Trump in front of cameras?
Ruffin wasn’t familiar with the British version when she was approached to star in CNN’s show – “They have so many panel shows over there. We don’t do that unless it’s five angry women in the morning,” she quipped – but she was immediately game. “It’s the lightest lift that has ever lifted,” she told TheWrap. “Because if you think about it, sitting around and talking about the news was what I was going to be doing anyway, and odds are...

CNN is doubling down on late-night-inspired comedy.
The news channel is bringing the long-running BBC panel show Have I Got News For You to American audiences, commissioning a limited-run adaptation set to air this fall. The show will run Saturday nights in primetime.
Have I Got News For You, which first premiered on the BBC in 1990, features comics, celebs, and pundits competing in a news-based quiz show.
The pickup comes as CNN continues a push into comedy programming. In March, the network began re-airing episodes of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher on Saturdays at 8 p.m. Et. A time-slot for Have I Got News For You was not announced.
The show will be produced by Hat Trick Productions, which produces the original series, and air under the CNN Originals banner.
The announcement was made today at the upfront presentation of CNN parent company Warner Bros.

CNN’s Mark Thompson told advertisers additional details about the network’s strategy, with plans to expand franchises to digital platforms and to build new branded verticals around topics beyond politics.
“We don’t believe news is just politics,” Thompson said at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. “Business and tech are news. Climate and weather are news. Health, wellness and living longer are news. So expect to see us build new branded verticals in all these areas on TV, on our apps and across our other platforms.”
Thompson has previously made the case that viewers are interested in a wider scope of coverage areas, while he has outlined plans to integrate linear TV and digital news units, and to boost CNN’s presence and innovation on smart phones and other mobile devices.
