The director, Dominque Deruddere, had to go back to Belgium for a stamp on his working permit one day before shooting was due to begin. If he hadn't returned in time, Francis Ford Coppola (one of the executive producers) would have started shooting in his place until Deruddere returned to take over.
The snow had melted in the area about a week before filming began in Ogden. They had to truck snow in from the mountains and use snow-blowers to set the scene to look like winter.
