It wasn’t that long ago that live telecasts like major league sporting events and star-studded awards shows were considered the savior of networks struggling to maintain relevancy in a streaming age.
And while streamers have taken their lumps lately — and sports is indeed keeping the lights on in linear — the age of blockbuster awards shows appears to be over. Which would mean it’s perhaps an inopportune time for the ceremonies out there looking for a new home or, in the case of the Golden Globes, looking to return, period.
Late last month, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. agreed to let Eldridge Industries, run by Todd Boehly, purchase the Golden Globes and make that part of the HFPA a for-profit enterprise. Eldridge has also taken control of Dick Clark Prods., the company that produces the Globes, which means Boehly has a vested interest in getting the show back on NBC.

The judges have high hopes for season 20 of American Idol. And round two of the auditions gave them more reasons to feel that way. Before the star-studded panel headed to work, Luke Bryan took Katy Perry and Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest on a scenic driving tour of Nashville and Broadway. And during a lunch break later in the show, there was an impromptu duet between Luke and Katy, who started formulating a song about queso. I can taste a hit. As for Idol hopefuls themselves, there was another crop of strong performances, from beauty queen to grocery store employee. One teen wowed the judges so much they earned the second platinum ticket, which gave them a leg up on “Hollywood Week.” In the end, we witnessed fireworks (actually and vocally). Here are the most memorable auditions this week. Betty Maxwell ABC/Eric McCandless The 27-year-old Miss America 2016 explained...

American Idol is welcoming American royalty to the auditions as Miss America 2016, Betty Maxwell puts her crown into the ring for a chance at becoming the country’s next big music star. In an exclusive sneak peek clip of her audition, the 27-year-old performer is bringing her Miss America crown along for good luck and leaves it by judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan who get a little competitive around the accessory. (Credit: ABC) Betty’s audition is doubly special because of the song she’s chosen to perform for the judges. In a brief peke at her musical performance, viewers get to see Betty’s interpretation of “A Moment Like This,” the hit song from American Idol‘s first-ever champion, Kelly Clarkson. Even with her stellar vocals, could someone else be stealing her crown? In the background as Betty belts her song, Katy can’t keep herself from reaching for the headpiece,...

SAG Awards Announces 2022 Production Team, Led by Executive Producers Jon Brockett and Kathy Connell
Jon Brockett has been tapped to serve as executive producer of the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, joining returning EP Kathy Connell at the helm. Brockett had previously served as a producer on the show, and has been a part of the SAG Awards since its fifth show, while Connell has been with the ceremony since it began in 1995.
Brockett and Connell are a part of this year’s production team, which the SAG Awards announced on Thursday. Not returning are Hazy Mills Productions’ Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, who served as EPs with Connell of the in-person 2019 and 2020 events, as well as last year’s pre-taped virtual special.
For 2022, as previously reported, the SAG Awards are shaking things up by moving venues, to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. There’s still no word yet on whether there will be a host for the show, which will air on Feb.

The death of Cheslie Kryst has spurred an outpouring of emotions around the world, as well as sparked a conversation about mental health awareness.
Now, Kryst’s mother is publicly sharing that her daughter privately battled depression — an inner struggle that she did not disclose with even her family and friends.
“I have never known a pain as deep as this. I am forever changed,” Kryst’s mother, April Simpkins, said in a statement.
“Today, what our family and friends privately knew was the cause of death of my sweet baby girl, Cheslie, was officially confirmed,” Simpkins’ statement continued. “While it may be hard to believe, it’s true. Cheslie led both a public and a private life. In her private life, she was dealing with high-functioning depression which she hid from everyone — including me, her closest confidant — until very shortly before her death.”
An autopsy this week officially confirmed Kryst’s cause of death.

In a move reflecting the diminished viability of beauty pageants in 2021; the free-fall of broadcast TV; the obsession with streaming — or maybe all of the above — the 100th annual Miss America competition will be seen only on Peacock.
The live stream on Thursday, December 16 will be available across time zones as well as on-demand after its conclusion. The shift ends decades of broadcast television airings of the event, dating to 1954. Peacock’s older sibling, NBC, aired the last Miss America show in 2019. Due to Covid, the 2020 edition was canceled, but organizers last April announced they planned to stage an in-person return. Even for a television property whose DNA is associated with a bygone era and with the Atlantic City boardwalk around Labor Day weekend, the retreat from linear TV is remarkable given its century of history, even with the cultural ground having shifted underfoot.

Organizers have planned a five-day event that starts on Dec. 12 and will follow 51 candidates representing all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., as they compete for scholarships. When Porsha Williams realized she might want to write a book, she knew she had to speak with her mother first. Williams knew she’d be revealing secrets — specifically about the sexual abuse she’s experienced in her life — and she wanted her mother’s blessing. Her mother, who frequently appeared with Williams on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” of course had her back.
“She said, ‘I’m behind you all the way, whatever you want to do, I’m in full support of you,” Williams, 40, recounts during an in-depth interview over Zoom from her home in Georgia.
“The Pursuit of Porsha: How I Grew Into My Power and Purpose” Williams’ resulting memoir, was written with Joi-Marie McKenzie, and will be released on Nov. 30 — two days after her new show, “Porsha’s Family Matters,” premieres on Bravo.

Writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples’ feature directorial debut, “Miss Juneteenth,” follows a former beauty queen, working-class, African American, single mother named Turquoise (Nicole Beharie), who wants nothing more than for her daughter to also wear the crown. Offering an atypical perspective of a beauty pageant, the film unfolds against the background of the Miss Juneteenth procession, named after the Juneteenth holiday, which commemorates when the last enslaved people in the United States were emancipated in 1865.
For many young Black women, the Miss Juneteenth pageant is their version of the more recognized Miss America. And for “Miss Juneteenth,” which foregrounds the story of a woman rarely given this much screen consideration, Beharie didn’t need to seek inspiration in prior films or performances. She simply had to focus her attention on the world around her and observe.
“I always think life is more interesting for inspiration, unless I literally shoplift or something like that,...

The nominees for the 2021 SAG Awards were announced Thursday morning via Instagram Live, and you can find the full list of nominees below.
Five different films landed three nominations each, including “Da 5 Bloods,” “Minari,” “The Father,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Those were also four of the five nominees for Best Ensemble, with “One Night in Miami” taking the place of “The Father” in the final field of five.
In the TV categories, “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Crown” each led in Comedy and Drama categories respectively, with each show picking up five nominations a piece. That’s in large part because the shows’ casts virtually swept the nominees, with three separate women being nominated for “The Crown” in the Supporting Role category (the other two in that category were held by “Ozark”).

Award-winning actress Cloris Leachman’s work ethic and versatility were only exceeded by her love of basking in the showbiz spotlight. The legacy she leaves her fans after dying this week at the age of 94 is immense, as is her share of trophies that she earned over the course of her career that continued up to 2020.
Her path to fame started when she was a Miss America contestant in 1946 as Miss Illinois. That led to a scholarship under Elia Kazan at the Actors Studio in New York City. She would make her film debut in Robert Aldrich’s disturbing film noir in which private eye Mike Hammer gives a lift to Leachman’s hitchhiker Christina, who has escaped a mental hospital wearing only a trench coat. She is duly tortured to death by a gang of men and her demise haunts the rest of the movie.

Only a few days short of January’s end, 2021 has seen the loss of its first Oscar winner. Here’s how the Associated Press broke the news:
Cloris Leachman, an Oscar-winner for her portrayal of a lonely housewife in “The Last Picture Show” and a comedic delight as the fearsome Frau Blücher in “Young Frankenstein” and self-absorbed neighbor Phyllis on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” has died. She was 94.
Leachman died in her sleep of natural causes at her home in Encinitas, California, publicist Monique Moss said Wednesday. Her daughter Dinah Englund was at her side, Moss said.
Remarkably those 94 years encompassed nine decades of work on the big and small(er) screen. Cloris Leachman, the seemingly invulnerable veteran of television and film, has died from natural causes at age 94. Leachman, a former Miss America contestant, gravitated to acting and launched a remarkable career that saw her win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the 1972 classic "The Last Picture Show" and enjoy an Emmy-winning legacy on television. Her comedic talents were the stuff of Hollywood legend and she memorably collaborated with Mel Brooks on two comedy classics, "Young Frankenstein" and "High Anxiety" in which she stole every scene she appeared in. We've lost one of the true greats. The one and only Cloris Leachman has died at 94 years of age of natural causes. The showbiz bug hit early, as it often does with plays as a teenager and by the time she was 20 in 1946 she was a Miss America contestant. Her career developed slowly as many truly enduring careers do, with numerous small roles in film and television (and some large ones onstage) before the big breakthrough. That breakthrough was a double whammy, as befits hard-working but late-breaking fame. In short succession she made a huge impression as Phyllis the landlady on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970/1971 first season and in October 1971 she was also on the big screen, flexing very different acting chops, in the soon to be Oscar-winning classic, The Last Picture Show (1971).

The first of the month is typically when the variety of streaming services on offer bolster their respective libraries with a mixture of original and pre-existing content, freshening things up for subscribers in the process. January 1st also happens to be the first day of 2021, though, so people might be expecting a little more than just a handful of new additions, and HBO Max are stepping up to the plate in a big way.
Of course, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to entice millions to sign up for Warner Bros.’ platform, especially when the entire slate of theatrical releases are also heading to the streaming site on the same day that they hit the big screen. And keen to capitalize on the inevitable influx of new customers, HBO Max is adding a massive amount of film and television titles on January 1st, with the onslaught set to continue over the next 30 days.

Nothing happens in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by accident, and studio boss Kevin Feige has the overarching story of each phase planned out years in advance. The culmination of the Infinity Saga has reshuffled the board a bit, though, and the upcoming slate of Phase Four projects promises an exciting mix of familiar faces and new characters.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will definitely be back at some point in the future, but Marvel have been heavily rumored to be laying the foundations for a more youthful offshoot of the team, with Feige previously confirming that a Young Avengers project is in the works. Ant-Man 3 has been touted as a potential destination for the lineup to debut, with Cassie Lang’s alter-ego Stature usually depicted as a key member, but a new report now claims that the team will star in a Disney Plus series instead of a feature-length movie.

Though Channing Godfrey Peoples’ directorial debut “Miss Juneteenth” is named for the holiday often called “Black Independence Day” or “Freedom Day,” the film is not a history lesson. At least not entirely. And with the film’s release on the 155th anniversary of the holiday, Peoples can’t help but find the moment a little bittersweet.
“There’s so much excitement in having the film go out into the world and people being able to see the story that’s been so near and dear to me,” Peoples tells Variety. “But we’re also in this really difficult time, especially within the Black community.”
“Thematically in the film, we’re talking about freedom and what freedom means for Black people. And here we are in 2020, still really navigating what freedom means for Black people — and that’s our freedom to survive and to be able to walk down the street...

At the end of the 1950s, celebrated French documentarian François Reichenbach, whose lens captured the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Johnny Hallyday, spent eighteen months traveling the United States, documenting its diverse regions, their inhabitants and their pastimes. The result, America As Seen by a Frenchman, is a wide-eyed perhaps even naïve journey through a multitude of different Americas, filtered through a French sensibility and serving as a fascinating exploration of a culture that is both immediately familiar and thoroughly alien.
Prison rodeos; Miss America pageants; visits to Disneyland and a school for striptease; a town inhabited solely by twins; rows of newborns in incubators, like products on an assembly line all these weird and wondrous sights, and more, are captured, sans jugement, by Reichenbach s camera, aided by whimsical narration and a jaunty musical score by the late, great Michel Legrand (Une femme est une femme).

The book is titled, The World’s Hardest Music Trivia: Rock n Roll History, Fun Facts and Behind the Scenes Stories About the Groups and Songs You Thought You Knew (Nautilus) but at 388 well-researched pages there is nothing trivial about it. The book is a fun read that not only covers rock 'n roll but also delves a bit into the realm of films, as well as providing interesting facts about eras gone by. Perhaps somewhat ironically its author, John Grantham, spent over 30 years in Hollywood in and around the movie industry as an actor, stuntman and voice over artist. Cinema Retro's Lee Pfeiffer caught up with him for a Q&A about his book which has a title longer than some nation's entire constitutions.

Director Robert Mandel's F/X is one of the most entertaining and compulsively watchable thrillers of 1986. I originally caught up with it on VHS and, while I was impressed with the film, the ending I found to be both hokey and frustrating, mostly due to the completely out-of-place 1982 song “Just an Illusion” by Imagination that plays over the end credits. I felt that it undermined all that preceded it. However, like William Friedkin's To Live and Die in La (1985) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), F/X is a film that would only grow on me after subsequent repeated viewings. I learned to forgive the inclusion of this song as the final minutes should really be viewed as a visual pun on the film’s overall theme, which begs the question “What is real and what is fiction?”

With hoards of paparazzi, smart phones and increasingly savvy social networks, the red carpet has become a minefield of sorts. Celebrities are never truly safe from the watchful eyes of the global media (just ask Julianne Moore).
But it wasn't always this way. Liv Tyler addresses this new Hollywood ethos -- specifically the requirement of professional help with hair, makeup and styling -- in her recent interview with Into The Gloss. Beauty norms have shifted significantly since the actress shot to fame in the '90s, and Liv is well aware of the ever-rising standards:
"Everything has changed so much in fashion and beauty since the '90s, when I was starting out ... I would go to things all the time where I did my own hair and makeup. Or, when I did 'Inventing the Abbotts' with Joaquin Phoenix, we were dating at the time, and I threw...

According to the New York Times, Larry Kaye, the lead producer of both Miss Firecracker Contest and Velocity of Autumn has revealed that the Spring 2013 Broadway openings of both have been postponed. The Firecracker postponement had to do with, acccording to Kaye, a scheduling conflict that 'stood in the way of getting our particular dream cast.' In the case of Velocity of Autumn, the show couldn't find 'a suitable theater this season that would be a great fit for this two-person, very intimate play.'...
