Tom Cruise has a reputation that precedes him. One consisting of tales of action and adventure, love and sorrow, missions, and the impossible. While he has been a part of several critically acclaimed projects, he is best known for his work in the action genre. Although there is no denying that he has reached the heights of Hollywood through his work here, it has made his reputation somewhat narrow.

Three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone has courted controversy with a series of technically ambitious, rabble rousing political dramas, chronicling the highs and lows of American history. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his narrative films, ranked worst to best (not including documentaries).
Born in 1946, Stone served in the Vietnam War before enrolling in NYU film school. During this same period, he directed the low-budget horror films “Seizure” (1974) and “The Hand” (1981).

Can Tom Cruise, who has spent the last decade dominating the box office with explosive hits like the Mission: Impossible series and Top Gun: Maverick, finally snag that elusive Oscar? The odds are looking better than ever, thanks to a new film venture under the acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu—the genius who steered Leonardo DiCaprio to his first ‘Best Actor’ Oscar for The Revenant after five previous nominations.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

Exclusive: Last time we heard from Oliver Stone, he was in Cannes for a special screening of Lula, his documentary on the incredible comeback of Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio da Silva and his reemergence from a prison cell to the presidency when it was exposed by a hacker that he was the target of an effort to bring Lula down. The three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker said at that time he had one more ambitious narrative film he was hellbent on directing. He has just signed with Atlas Artists for representation in all areas to make that dream a reality.

Tom Cruise is currently one of the most celebrated action heroes that continues to push boundaries in action filmmaking. Unlike most actors, he doesn’t employ stuntmen for physically challenging action sequences or stunts. His work in The Mission Impossible franchise proved that he is ready to take risks that even stuntmen would think twice before committing to.

Ah, it’s Hollywood—where the big screen becomes a needlepoint of dreams and the Oscars are the golden yardstick of excellence. But it is actually sad when Tom Cruise’s fans clamor for the actor to flex his dramatic chops more often, yet they can’t help but recall how the Academy Awards passed him by to adorn Michael Caine with the honorary statuette.
Cruise, a powerhouse with four Oscar nominations under his belt, for stellar roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and the box office juggernaut Top Gun: Maverick, hasn’t yet bagged an Oscar.

As blockbusters and critical darlings rock through his filmography, it’s quite an Oscar tale to tell—of nominations without culmination. And notably, Cruise’s star turn in Magnolia lost in a twist of Oscar fate to Michael Caine’s performance in The Cider House Rules.

Tom Cruise, with his amazing plethora of blockbuster movies, has etched his name in Hollywood. But despite having an illustrious cinematic career, the actor has never won an Oscar. However, his significant contributions in the industry have now earned him an honor that only a few Hollywood greats, such as Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese, have achieved.

In Hollywood, where dreams are made and broken with the toss of a coin, sometimes it seems like the deck is stacked against even the most deserving actors. Take Tom Cruise, for example, who has charmed audiences with his megawatt grin and natural charisma. Yet, according to director Oliver Stone, the actor was unfairly denied the chance to clutch an Academy Award in his hands.
Cruise’s role in Born on the Fourth of July truly mirrored his acting chops. And thus, it seemed like he was destined for greatness and the coveted ‘Best Actor’ award at the Oscars. However, as fate would have it, the actor found himself up against a fierce competition that included the likes of Kenneth Branagh, Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, and Daniel Day-Lewis. The latter ultimately took home the Oscar for his role in My Left Foot.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and 2023’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017), “Dunkirk” (2018) and, to some extent, “Oppenheimer” (2024) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). With a film career that spans over four decades, Tom Cruise is arguably the biggest movie star of this generation. Cruise is associated with so many iconic film moments — the dance in “Risky Business,” the “need for speed” chant in “Top Gun,” and “Show me the money!” in “Jerry Maguire,” among many others — that it seems like he’s been a movie star forever.
He has been a critical darling through parts of his career but has mainly focused on blockbusters (acclaimed or not). He has received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor in “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) and “Jerry Maguire” (1996) plus another as Best Supporting Actor in “Magnolia” (1999). Those are the three performances that provided him with Golden Globe wins. His other four nominations with the Hollywood Foreign Press were for “Risky Business” (1983), “A Few Good Men” (1992), “The Last Samurai” (2003) and “Tropic Thunder” (2008). Many of these roles...

Tom Cruise’s Interview With The Vampire Role Was Offered To Another Actor ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Tom Cruise is arguably one of the biggest action movie stars in the world. Before being cast in the world-renowned franchise Mission Impossible, he had led highly successful films, including “Top Gun” and “Born on the Fourth of July.”
Starring in movies like “Rain Man” and the 1996 hit film “Interview With The Vampire” proved the action star could also shine as a dramatic actor. But director Neil Jordan revealed Tom Cruise wasn’t the first choice to play Lesat. The movie was adapted from Anne Rice’s original book of the same name.
In an excerpt from his new memoir, published in The Telegraph, Jordan reflected on his decision to cast Tom Cruise opposite Brad Pitt, revealing he originally offered the role to Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis.

When Neil Jordan’s “Interview With the Vampire” film adaptation released in 1994, Tom Cruise was already a worldwide star. He had led the highly successful “Risky Business” and “Top Gun” and received an Oscar nomination for “Born on the Fourth of July.” But, not everyone was convinced he could play the titular vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt, and his casting caused a considerable amount of backlash among fans of Anne Rice’s original book.
In an excerpt from his new memoir published in The Telegraph, director Jordan reflected on his decision to cast Cruise opposite Brad Pitt and the outrage that followed, recalling how he originally offered the role to Daniel Day-Lewis.
“The problem was the casting of Lestat. Brad Pitt had agreed to play Louis and somehow assumed Daniel Day-Lewis would be playing Lestat, an assumption shared by Anne. I offered it to Daniel, who read it, and, as I expected,...

“Thank you for your service.” The words have become a cliché, but Hollywood has tried long and hard to make them matter. The industry has produced countless films about warfare and those who died for their country (whom we remember this week). But it has had a mixed record on presenting characters suffering the after-effects of putting their lives on the line. They may have survived, but lost comrades and innocence. It is their moment, too.
World War II brought the most cinematic treatment, and one of the directors who himself served — William Wyler — later had the guts to depict the challenges soldiers faced when the fighting stopped. Vietnam was likely the most troublesome to depict, it being the one we lost. Right-winger John Wayne was up first, with “The Green Berets,” gung-ho in flavor. Brainy political lightning rod Oliver Stone isn’t making feature films anymore. Sure, he’d love to add a 21st to his 20 films to date; he just can’t find backers. His alternate route, like many other directors today, from fellow Cannes entrant Ron Howard (“Jim Henson: Idea Man”) to Martin Scorsese, is documentaries.
Stone has churned out a career total of ten, including recent 2021 Cannes entry “JFK Revisited” (Showtime) and 2022 eco-doc “Nuclear” (Abramorama). His latest, “Lula,” marks a move to the left from his much-criticized recent portraits of dictators such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro (HBO’s “Comandante”) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (Showtime’s four-part “The Putin Interviews”).
Since his start as a filmmaker in the 1970s, the Yale-grad-turned-Vietnam-vet, now 77, has leaned into political fiction, from “Salvador,” “Wall Street,” and “W.,” to Best Director Oscar-winners “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” His last Oscar nomination came in 1996, for “Nixon,...

Oliver Stone is in Cannes today for a Special Screening of Lula, a documentary he co-directed with Rob Wilson about the unbelievable comeback of Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva. The film chronicles his extraordinary journey in 2022 to regain the Brazilian presidency after spending 19 months in prison. This happened after a hacker exposed a conspiracy meant to take down the labor leader in a corruption scandal that tied back to Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and the most powerful judge in the country. It’s a story you have to see to believe.

In the 1980s, you would have been hard-pressed to find anybody who had access to cocaine not on cocaine. And that especially went for those in the world of entertainment. As such, it was only a matter of time before a movie would give it the spotlight…and that movie was 1983’s Scarface. Appropriately enough, Oliver Stone — then a serious lover of booger sugar — was tasked to write Scarface. All he needed to do was kick his habit…
In an excerpt from the new book “The World Is Yours: The Story of Scarface”, Oliver Stone remembered being in serious need of a hit, having just helmed flop The Hand. At the time, he admitted, “I was on cocaine. I was doing cocaine, and I was really an addict, without knowing it.” He added, “I did all the research for Scarface on cocaine, in and out of the country. It was...

In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Under the Cloak of War", a Klingon ambassador named Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom) comes to visit the U.S.S. Enterprise on a diplomatic mission. "Strange New Worlds" takes place immediately after the Klingon War, and several of the ship's crew remember the conflict vividly, expressing prejudice and consternation to see a Klingon on board. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) reminds his officers to keep an open mind, but Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) cannot.
Through flashbacks, audiences learn the horrible wartime conditions that both Dr. M'Benga and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) served under, and they were bleak. There weren't enough medical supplies to go around, and Dr. M'Benga had taken to storing injured soldiers inside a transporter pattern buffer, hoping to rematerialize them when more could be done. He also secretly develops a rare and dangerous steroid called Protocol 12 which temporarily increases strength and...

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

While the past two decades saw Tom Cruise transforming into a full-fledged action star, who pulls off his own stunts irrespective of the risk, there is more to his career than these big-budget action flicks. Even though the impact of the Mi franchise can’t be denied as it remains a staple in the realm of action filmmaking, prior to it, Cruise’s filmography was mostly dictated by dramas led by auteurs.
During the mid-80s and the ’90s, the Tropic Thunder star would continue to display his acting chops in critically acclaimed dramas, which paved the way for his dominance in Hollywood,

It doesn’t sound like Ryan Gosling and Oliver Stone are ever going to work together after these comments from the acclaimed director.

Oliver was asked about the comments from a Mattel boss who jokingly said that he should direct Barbie 2.

“Ridiculous,” he told CityAM. “Ryan Gosling is wasting his time if he’s doing that sh-t for money. He should be doing more serious films. He shouldn’t be a part of this infantilization of Hollywood.”

Last February, David Zaslav made his way to CAA’s offices, accompanied by his film-studio chiefs, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. The delegation gathered in agent Maha Dakhil’s office, where Kevin Huvane and Joel Lubin were in attendance. Also there was a prized client: Tom Cruise.
The meeting was the product of a call that De Luca and Abdy had made to Dakhil. They asked Dakhil to pass along a message of thanks to Cruise for working so hard to save theaters. The star was then still in the process of pulling the seventh Mission: Impossible movie together, which he had dragged against heavy odds through the pandemic. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick had restored faith in the viability of movie theaters. Cruise would later promote Barbenheimer, a rare move for an actor who had nothing to do with either film.
The CAA meeting went on for two hours.

Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). His remaining half dozen directing notices came for his work on “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “The Age of Innocence” (1994), “Casino” (1996), “The Aviator...

Tom Cruise has seemingly done it all over the course of his long and successful film career. The only thing Cruise hasn’t done so far is win an Oscar. But doing so might not be seen as much of an accomplishment for the respected actor.

Cruise has been far less concerned with bringing home awards than perhaps even his fans. The actor has been nominated for an Academy Award four times in his career. In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise and director Brian De Palma achieved something that Hollywood would spend much of the next decade trying to replicate: a genuinely great movie adaptation of a popular television show that blew up at the box office. The first Mission: Impossible movie was somehow both an ode to the face-swapping, hi-tech hijinks of the original 1960s series while also serving as the perfect star vehicle for Cruise. Even De Palma was at the peak of his powers as an auteur, having just made his most underrated movie in Carlito’s Way.
In the years that followed, other big screen updates of small screen favorites would try to repeat the formula with often disastrous results. Film versions of shows like Wild Wild West, Lost in Space, The Avengers (not that one), and The Mod Squad all amounted to miserable trips to the multiplex. Meanwhile Mission: Impossible’s...

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

From auditioning for “every John Hughes movie that I never got in” to having Oliver Stone yell at her in a helicopter over her pronunciation of “’Nam,” Robin Wright confesses she’s seen Hollywood from all sides over the years.

Most viewers went starry-eyed for “John Wick: Chapter 4” when it was released earlier this year. But Oliver Stone isn’t most viewers.
Speaking to Variety before receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Transilvania Film Festival, the two-time Best Director Oscar winner unloaded on the Keanu Reeves blockbuster, calling the film “disgusting beyond belief.”
“I saw ‘John Wick 4’ on the plane. Talk about volume. I think the film is disgusting beyond belief. Disgusting. I don’t know what people are thinking,” Stone said of the feature, which grossed more than $432 million worldwide after its release in March. “Maybe I was watching ‘G.I. Joe’ when I was a kid. But [John Wick] kills, what, three, four hundred people in the fucking movie. And as a combat veteran, I gotta tell you, not one of them is believable. I realize it’s a movie, but it’s become a video game more than a movie.

Oliver Stone is addressing the “John Wick” franchise as an Army veteran.
The “Born on the Fourth of July” Oscar winner told Variety while receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Transilvania Film Festival that “John Wick: Chapter 4” is an example of films becoming more like shoot ’em up video games.

Stone added, “It’s lost touch with reality. The audience perhaps likes the video game.

Disney and Pixar’s latest animated feature, “Elemental,” is a charming drama about family and identity, centering the story of two elements, Ember and Wade, who fall in love with each other. Many different themes are tackled within, from questions of personal identity to the struggles of immigration. But at a certain point Ember talks about how, as a fire element who can cause things to ignite just by standing next to them, the “world is not designed for me.”
My ears immediately perked up when I heard that line. As a disabled person, I say this regularly because the world is definitely not designed with me in mind, or most disabled people for that matter. Director Peter Sohn and co-screenwriters John Hoberg and Kat Likkel didn’t intend to tell a disabled story, but the story they told is one that does resonate with marginalized people. “The idea of...
