"The Simpsons" has been running for thirty-six seasons, and even longer if you count the "Tracey Ullman" years, which means their list of celebrity guest stars has grown long. From Dustin Hoffman in season 2's "Lisa's Substitute" to John Cena in the season 36 premiere, the "Simpsons" writers have never shied from letting an A-lister stop by for the day. Most guest stars only perform for the show once or twice, often to play themselves, but sometimes, the guest star plays a character so memorable that keep coming back even thirty years later, like Kelsey Grammer with Sideshow Bob.
For the show's creator Matt Groening, there are a few celebrities that have managed to stick out from the pack. When asked to name his three favorite guest stars in a 2021 interview, he named Albert Brooks, Werner Herzog, and Anne Hathaway.

After 35 years and nearly 700 episodes, one of the core cast members of The Simpsons is leaving. Earlier this week, Pamela Hayden, who voices Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, Rod, (sometimes) Todd and dozens of other characters, announced her retirement from the show, saying, “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily. It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty and groundbreaking show.”
Her final performance will be this Sunday, but before she leaves Springfield for good, I caught her on her way out of town to talk about her earliest memories from The Simpsons, Milhouse’s irrepressible optimism and whether or not he and Lisa belong together.
It was such a surprise to hear that you’re leaving The Simpsons, how did you come to the decision to leave?
It was a fabulous run.

Since it first came out in 2005, "American Dad!" has steadily held it down as one of the most underrated animated sitcoms around. While comparisons to "Family Guy," another show created by Seth MacFarlane, were inevitable, it's gradually branched out in absurdity in the best way. It began as a commentary on George W. Bush-era politics, with Stan Smith being a prototypical 2000s Republican, but now, one's more likely to find eldritch horrors in an "American Dad!" storyline than overt social satire.
That extends to the show's Christmas specials, which have some of the most unhinged plots in the entire series. It's not like "Bob's Burgers" Christmas episodes where you'll definitely feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You may even have deep, unsettling questions about what you just watched, but these episodes aren't entirely devoid of genuine heart. That's the magic of "American Dad!" From a long-time fan, here are all of the "American Dad!

Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten has been in the news a lot lately following the announcement that legendary Simpsons voice actress Pamela Hayden is retiring. While the future of Bart Simpson’s best friend is uncertain, we’d like to take a brief look at his past.
Obviously, Milhouse went on to become one of the funniest characters in the history of the entire show, but his origin story is far from glamorous. Milhouse made his first appearance alongside Bart in a commercial for Butterfinger back in December 1988. This was a full year before The Simpsons even premiered.
To be clear, Milhouse wasn’t a part of the popular Tracey Ullman Show shorts that spawned the commercial, he was purely created to help a massive corporation sell chocolate. And for that reason, it seems as though not a whole lot of thought was put into the design of Bart’s new buddy.

Fox Corporation will continue distributing its original programming and licensed shows through the Walt Disney Company’s general entertainment streaming service Hulu for a few more years.
This week, the companies reached a deal that will allow Disney to continue offering next-day episodes of Fox’s prime-time programming like “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” “The Masked Signer” and “Hell’s Kitchen” through 2027.
Some hit Fox series, including animated shows like “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” are owned by Disney following the company’s purchase of 21st Century Fox (now 20th Television) and other assets from Fox in 2019. Disney continues to license the shows to Fox for its prime-time schedule, and that agreement allows Fox to distribute the shows through its own video on-demand catalog on cable, satellite and streaming or sublicense certain rights to other parties.

“Animation Domination” is Fox’s phrase but Hulu’s truth.
Consistently, Hulu’s top-performing series is not “Only Murders in the Building” or “Tell Me Lies,” but rather Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” or “Family Guy.” And those animated encores aren’t going anywhere thanks to an extended deal between Fox Entertainment and Hulu — well, they’re not going anywhere until at least 2029.
The new content-partnership agreement, valued at $1.5 billion per Deadline, will keep new, in-season Fox shows available for streaming on Hulu. It will also keep the out-of-season episodes for Fox’s animated shows like “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy” in Hulu’s archives. Out-of-season episodes for select Fox unscripted shows will continue to be made available through Hulu under the deal.
When reached by IndieWire, a Fox spokesperson and a Hulu spokesperson both declined to comment on the dollar amount.

The voice of Milhouse is leaving after season 35 of "The Simpsons." Pamela Hayden has been a part of the long-running series since the first season aired back in 1989 and also voices Jimbo Jones, Rod (and sometimes Todd) Flanders, and Chief Wiggum's wife Sarah. Now, however, fans of Milhouse will surely be feeling conflicted about one of the show's best characters being voiced by another actor.
Rather than dwell upon what is truly the end of an era for "The Simpsons," however, why not celebrate the legacy of Hayden's Milhouse? The boy whose mom says he's cool; who knows far too much about the various types of sprinklers; who's had his picture on "America's Most Wanted" and was subsequently hunted by the FBI before jumping from a dam to what would have been certain death (he only broke his glasses), has been provided some of the best moments in the show's long history.

Hulu will continue to be the next-day streaming partner of Fox primetime shows, as well as to stream out-of-season episodes of some reality titles.
Even though Fox hasn’t owned a stake in Hulu for five years now, the two entities are very important to one another. One Fox executive called the relationship between the two “symbiotic” early last year and that relationship will continue to deepen. On Thursday, Fox and Hulu announced that they had renewed their content partnership deal for multiple years to come.
Key Details: Hulu will continue to hold in-season streaming rights for scripted Fox shows. Additionally, select unscripted series will continue showing out-of-season episodes on the streamer. The marketing deal first established between the two in 2023 has also been extended. 30-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month hulu.com

Hulu will continue to be the U.S. streaming home for Fox’s “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” “The Masked Singer” and other shows for at least the next four years.
Fox Corp.’s Fox Entertainment and Disney’s Hulu announced a multiyear renewal of their content partnership, encompassing in-season streaming rights for Fox’s programming slate. The agreement also includes the extension of the marketing alliance the two companies forged in January 2023, under which Fox and Hulu branding jointly share presence across all Fox-owned and external consumer touchpoints “to align with live and on-demand viewing messaging of Fox content.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal renewal runs for a four-year term, sources said.
Fox Corp. does not operate its own subscription streaming service and has leaned on its Hulu partnership to monetize content in the subscription VOD space. Separately, Fox operates Tubi, a free, ad-supported streamer.

The Simpsons’ Ray Bradbury-inspired horror and sci-fi anthology episode strikes gold with clever parodies, concise writing, and hilarious gags.
The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” specials were certainly the animated series’ first foray into anthology storytelling, but hardly the only time that they’ve dipped their toe into this water. 36 seasons in, The Simpsons has done “Simpsons Bible Stories,” “Simpsons Tall Tales,” “Simpson Christmas Stories,” and even “Thanksgiving of Horror.” There are also considerably headier ideas, like anthology-based deconstructions of western art, divine intervention and God, and even an episode where an Anonymous-esque hacker hijacks the series and releases “show-destroying” clips and stories that will tarnish The Simpsons’ I.P. The Simpsons clearly isn’t afraid to tackle esoteric and broad ideas through the anthology format, but the fact that they’re still doing “Treehouse of Horror” episodes is a testament to just how much this series loves horror. But, most famously, Hayden gave life to Bart’s bespectacled, blue-haired best friend Milhouse Van Houten, who first debuted in a 36-year-old Simpsons Butterfinger commercial that actually predated the series.
Reportedly, Sunday’s non-Halloween “Treehouse of Horror” episode will be Hayden’s last. So far there has been no announcement concerning the future of Hayden’s characters, including Milhouse. Will they recast him? Write him out of the show? Have him come down with a case of laryngitis that just never goes away?
Rampant speculation aside, Hayden seems pretty irreplaceable. To underscore that bittersweet point, here are some of the great Milhouse moments that wouldn’t have worked nearly as well with another actor:

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment and Hulu are staying in business together in a major way.
The two companies have struck a new multiyear content partnership that includes in-season streaming rights for Fox’s programming slate.
The broadcast network and the Disney-owned streamer also have expanded their multiplatform marketing arrangement in the deal, which sources tell Deadline is worth more than $1.5B over four years with the ad-load included.
Fox got in early to renew the deal – the previous arrangement was unveiled in January 2023 and Deadline understands this new pact runs through 2029. It gives the network a bedrock to build out its slate of originals including dramas such as Rescue Hi-Surf and Murder in a Small Town, comedies including Animal Control and reality series such as The Masked Singer, The Floor and Gordon Ramsay’s Next Level Chef.

President-elect Donald Trump continues to announce comically terrible cabinet picks seemingly plucked out of half-remembered TV listings from 2013. Now he’s added Dr. Mehmet Oz to a lineup that already includes Fox News hosts Sean Duffy (formerly of The Real World) and Pete Hegseth, as well as WWE co-founder Linda McMahon.
Dr. Oz has been tapped to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a decision that’s led a lot of folks online to make jokes comparing Trump’s pick to another famous TV quack: Dr. Nick Riviera.
But that’s not exactly a fair comparison — to Dr. Nick, that is.
Sure, Dr. Nick’s not perfect. He lost his watch during an operation, dispenses opioids from a Pez dispenser, once stole cadavers in order to drive in the carpool lane and surgically swapped poor Mr. McGreg’s arm and leg.
But Dr. Nick may just be a better physician than Dr.

The cartoon game will run on ESPN2, Disney+ and ESPN+, the latest attempt by ESPN to devise new sports formats that are more attractive to young children and their families, perhaps, than the real thing.

All good things must eventually come to an end. Even though "The Simpsons," which is now in its 36th season that included a fake finale, isn't ending, a key cast member of the show who has been there for 35 years is saying goodbye. Pamela Hayden, the voice behind characters such as Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, and many others, has announced her retirement from the classic animated series. Her final appearance airs in a matter of days. The show will then have to soldier on without her.
Hayden's final appearance will be in this week's episode "Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes." The announcement was made with a tribute video (which you can check out below). It features Hayden sharing her love for Milhouse in particular, as well as some of the other characters she's voiced on "The Simpsons" over the years. According to Deadline, Fox is going to...

Everything’s coming up Milhouse — including retirement.
After 35 years of exceptional service to the comedy community, legendary voice actress Pamela Hayden has announced her imminent retirement from The Simpsons. Like many of the original Simpsons voice actors, Hayden, 70, plays numerous roles on the show, including Jimbo Jones, Rod (and sometimes Todd) Flanders and the fan-favorite elementary school sad sack Milhouse Van Houten, best known for his bone-dry cuffs and unrequited love of Lisa Simpson that leads him to dangerous places.
Hayden’s final performance on The Simpsons will be in this Sunday’s new episode “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” and, to celebrate Hayden’s many years of hard work and dedication, the official Simpsons Twitter account posted a touching tribute. A long-time Simpsons voice actor is retiring.
Pamela Hayden, who has voiced Bart’s friend Milhouse Van Houten — and dozens more characters — for the past 35 years, is departing the long-running Fox series. Hayden has been credited on just under 700 of The Simpsons‘ 774 episodes to date.
In addition to Milhouse, Hayden has provided the voices for Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders (and occasionally his brother Todd), Malibu Stacy, Lisa’s classmate Janey and many other recurring and one-time characters.
“The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily,” Hayden said in a statement. “It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show. … I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.”

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
Setting aside shows like “Glee” and “Schmigadoon,” which put song and dance at the center of every episode, few TV series have brought to life as many musical moments as “The Simpsons.” Over 35 seasons (and counting), Fox’s timeless sitcom has produced 29 musical episodes (per WikiSimpsons) and quite a few more if the parameters are expanded to include any episode featuring meaningful original music. No matter how you define a musical episode, a number of “The Simpsons” best-ever entries feature catchy melodies paired with smart (and smart-mouthed) lyrics, from “Marge vs. The Monorail” to “That ’90s Show,” “A Streetcar Named Marge” to “Cape Feare.”
Still, despite devoting more episodes to musicals than most modern series get for an entire series, “The Simpsons” is approaching 800 total episodes. Relatively speaking,...

Every now and then, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has to hand it to the censors he’s spent his career battling and admit that, maybe, not every national tragedy needs a cheap Pez joke.
On Family Guy, MacFarlane and his writers have long flaunted their disdain for restraint, picking fights with the pearl-clutchers every chance they get and going after their rivals at The Simpsons with rape-y abandon. Born out of a late 1990s era of comedy when “Won’t somebody please think of the children?” was more than just Helen Lovejoy’s catchphrase, Family Guy was, in its early years, boundary-pushing and iconoclastic in its approach to satirizing American culture.
However, even MacFarlane knows that “edgy” humor has its limits, and his answer to a question in a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly recently resurfaced as Family Guy fans rush to hear which Family Guy joke went too far:...

Yesterday morning, Cincinnati Bengals beat reporter Jay Morrison revealed that everything is not, in fact, coming up Milhouse in the world of professional football. Namely, that despite the Bengals and Dallas Cowboys both experiencing highly disappointing seasons, the NFL can’t bump their upcoming, not-so-anticipated Monday Night Football matchup due to a Simpsons alternate cast that’s set to air on ESPN+ and Disney+.
“For those asking, the Bengals-Cowboys Mnf game is not eligible to be flexed out,” Morrison wrote of the teams’ December 9th showdown in a now-viral tweet. “All the drawings, voiceovers and other work that has been done for The Simpsons alt-cast that will air that night.”
Considering both teams have had humdrum seasons — the Cowboys currently stand at 3-7 while the Bengals aren’t much better at 4-7 — football fans reacted much like Springfieldians upon discovering their city had been encased in a glass dome,...

Animated specters, demons, angry eggplants, and all manner of otherworldly entities visited the town of Nowhere in “Courage the Cowardly Dog.” Created by John Dilworth, the bizarrely endearing Cartoon Network show about an apprehensive pup facing strange foes to protect his beloved owner, Muriel, celebrates its 25th anniversary this month.
“Courage” debuted on November 12, 1999, and spawned 52 episodes (102 segments). However, the brave pinkish canine (voiced by Marty Grabstein) first appeared in Dilworth’s 1996 Oscar-nominated short film “The Chicken from Outer Space,” which served as the show’s pilot.
“I never thought of making a cartoon show that would have such an impact,” said Dilworth during a recent video interview from New York. “Look at my colleagues doing ‘The Simpsons,’ there are shows that are profound. I just have this little dog show, and perhaps it was my wanting to do a family drama that had elements of scary and funny in it.

Making The Simpsons Movie must have been a daunting task. How do you honor nearly 20 years of iconic material in one 90-minute feature? Most recurring Simpsons characters got at least one moment to shine in the movie — from Krusty the Clown, to Hans Moleman, to Kent Brockman. And the movie even found ways to include brief cameos from more obscure characters like Itchy & Scratchy creator Chester J. Lampwick, and foul-mouthed puppet Gabbo.
Which makes it all the more strange that one of the show’s most well-known characters was absolutely nowhere to be found in The Simpsons Movie: Bart’s mortal enemy Dr. Demento Sideshow Bob.
Bob Terwilliger is obviously one of the keystones of the show’s mythology, but didn’t make the cut for the movie? This wasn’t always the plan, it turns out. Some story elements shifted around during production; the original villain of The Simpsons...

In the earliest episodes of Rick and Morty, nearly all of the action was focused on the two titular leads, but as the seasons have rolled by, Morty’s teenage sister Summer has become a considerable presence on the show in her own right. She’s worked for the devil, become the queen to a bunch of aliens, had an incest baby with her brother and single-handedly killed a group of bad guys trying to “do a Die Hard.”
Spencer Grammer is the woman who has given the teen her voice — as well as helped further hone that voice after all these years. I recently spoke to Grammer about Summer’s most badass moments, how she’s found herself becoming as vulgar as Summer and the lines she knows every Rick and Morty fan wants to hear (they’re also very vulgar).
What drew you to voice acting?
It’s sort of a sad story.

Kelsey Grammer is currently enjoying a great deal of success with the revival of "Frasier," a series that has been running on Paramount+ since October 2023. The original "Frasier," itself a spinoff of "Cheers," starred Grammer as the titular character, a radio psychologist whose persnickety attitudes and tastes invited all manner of zany shenanigans into his life. The original show lasted 264 episodes over 11 seasons, making it one of the most successful sitcoms of its decade.
But, as many might be able to point out, Grammer's career has been wildly varied in success. He often shows up in films, yet he has headlined far more bombs than hits. Grammer has played Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast in several live-action "X-Men" movies, but he has also appeared in a slew of weird, low-budget, straight-to-home-media schlock. Who could forget, for instance, the bizarre glories of Andrew Lawrence's "Money Plane"? Grammer has similarly starred in numerous low-rent Christmas movies,...

While the actor hasn't really given his personal views about Sarah Atwood's (Dawn Olivieri) assassins killing John in a comparatively anticlimactic fashion so far, he does have a few words for the assorted fans who are less than happy about the way his character departs the neo-Western drama.
"Fans have a voice in things, and they choose to follow stuff," Costner noted regarding the fans' displeased reaction in a comment he gave to E! News at the 2024 Governors Awards. However, the actor didn't express personal frustration about the show's decision to...

One charming aspect of early "The Simpsons" seasons is how janky the animation looks. Season one of the show was a marked improvement over the animated shorts that buttressed "The Tracey Ullman Show" commercial breaks back in the '80s, but it still looked pretty funky compared to the series that airs today. Back when "Futurama" premiered almost 25 years ago, however, the show actually looked pretty good. Matt Groening's second major TV project debuted with a relatively clean animation style that took advantage of 3D rendering to deliver a hybrid 2D/3D style that set the aesthetics of "Futurama" apart from "The Simpsons."
Of course, as with any TV series, initial designs weren't quite the same as what we eventually saw on-screen. For example, an early design for Bender gave him three antennas, gloves, and Bart Simpson's clothes.

Back in 1990, when "The Simpsons" was only in its second season, show creator Matt Groening had already begun floating ideas for a sci-fi/comedy companion series. He even went on record with the corollary that his new show would be to "The Simpsons" what "The Jetsons" was to "The Flintstones." Groening spent several years turning the idea over in his head before finally approaching "Simpsons" writer David X. Cohen about the possibility of co-creating something together. The two slowly developed many ideas and invented a cast of new characters to live in the futuristic, robot-and-alien-crowded world of A.D. 3000. Some of the original titles for the series included "Aloha, Mars!" and "Doomsville." The show was also initially conceived to be bleaker and more dystopian than it ended up being; every corner was outfitted with a coin-operated suicide booth.
Eventually, Groening...

The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's popular 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is handily explained in its theme song: five passengers check into a three-hour boat tour, run by the skipper and first mate of a tiny tourist boat called the S.S. Minnow. The ship hits some bad weather and is thrown miles off course, landing on an uncharted desert isle. The seven tourists become seven stranded castaways. No phones, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like "Robinson Crusoe," it's as primitive as can be. The septet have to learn to live together, usually to comedic effect.
Gilligan (Bob Denver) was the above-mentioned first mate, and his innocent cluelessness and tendency to bumble often thwarted the castaways' ability to escape. He shared the island with his Skipper (Alan Hale), a professor (Russell Johnson), a pair of married millionaires (Natalie Schafer and Jim Backus), a farmer (Dawn Wells), and a...

In the two-part "South Park" episode "Cartoon Wars" from 2006, it's revealed that an upcoming episode of "Family Guy" will feature the Prophet Muhammad as a character. The citizens of the titular town become terrified over the thought of military retaliation from various Islam-majority countries, since depictions of Muhammad are typically seen as blasphemous to many Muslim adherents. The episode came in the wake of a 2005 controversy when the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published comic strips that depicted Muhammad, sparking protests and even riots.
By the end of the episode, the citizens of South Park are literally burying their heads in the sand, trying to prove that they haven't been looking at the "Family Guy" Muhammad episode. "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker were trying to state, in their clumsy, cynical way, that it's silly to get offended by such things, and no one should be sensitive to the beliefs of others.

Matt Groening has been asked many times as to why he chose to make the Simpsons yellow, and he typically responds with some version of "I wanted them to look unique." For its first few seasons, "The Simpsons" were considered very strange and outré. Despite their popularity, they had a subversive, cynical punk sensibility that came to inform the art of the decade that followed. After enough time, though, the yellowness of the Simpsons became a widely accepted facet of their design, and they stopped looking quite as striking. Just as one might stop noticing that Mickey Mouse wears gloves, or Donald Duck has no pants.
The color scheme of "The Simpsons" was always a little odd. The walls of the Simpsons' house, for instance, are pink, as is the Simpsons family car. Their TV is purple, and their carpets are a deep teal. Bart always wore teal shorts and a blood orange shirt,...
