There are so many characters that their names are always shown onscreen even if they're main characters.
The romanization of the characters' names differs between the DVD- and laserdisc subtitles. E.g. Walter von Schönkopf (DVD) / Walter von Schenkopp (LD). The series' IMDb page follows the DVD subtitles, as they are generally considered more authentic, besides closer to their German origin.
In episode 82, Yang's bedtime reading is Magic of Summer by Yoshiki Tanaka. Yoshiki Tanaka wrote the original novel Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
LoGH was originally distributed to fans of the books using a subscription based service. Rather than buying the OVAs one at a time, people paid a monthly fee to have the tapes delivered.
