We are back for a brand new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where we’re going to Massachusetts by way of Italy with Fabrizio Laurenti’s 1988 Witchery. Our selection this month comes from director/screenwriter Michael Varrati, whose work includes some amazing short films, a segment in the horror holiday anthology Deathcember, and multiple episodes of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula. Varrati brings a sharp, darkly comical perspective to his work and his love of horror shines through in his work.
Varrati’s pick this month was actually released in In Italy as La Casa 4 and is part of a disjointed series that actually starts with the first two The Evil Dead movies, renamed La Casa and La Casa 2 for Italian audiences. Witchery forgoes the Evil Dead cabin for a big, old house on an island that can only be accessed by boat and is said to be haunted by a witch.

It used to be that video game movies were bad because video games didn’t give movies enough to work with; say what you will about Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton’s “Super Mario Bros.,” but they had to do something to flesh out a story that basically amounted to “Italian stereotype runs from left to right.” Nowadays, in an age when interactive epics are so vast and cinematic that Playstation characters are regularly played by movie stars (and sometimes even modeled to resemble major filmmakers), it seems that video game movies are bad because video games give movies way too much to work with.

Jack Hedley, who featured in films including James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only and Lawrence of Arabia, along with a string of UK TV hits, has died aged 92.
A note in today’s Times said Hedley, who was born Jack Hawkins, had died on December 11 after a “short illness bravely borne.” At Hedley’s request, there will be no funeral.
Hedley was born in London in 1929 and started appearing in films in the 1950s. He starred in the BBC series The World of Tim Frazer in the early 1960s and went on to feature in a number of films that decade, including Lawrence of Arabia, The Scarlet Blade, Witchcraft and The Secret of Blood Island (pictured).
He was to further make a name for himself many years later when he was cast as Sir Timothy Havelock in James Bond’s For Your Eyes Only, for which he also voiced Havelock’s Parrot.

"The Deep House" is putting an aquatic spin on the classic haunted house movie. What could possibly make a ghost-infested home more anxiety-inducing, you ask? Flooding it with water, of course! As if being haunted by angry spirits isn't enough, try surviving on a limited air supply. The couple at the center of this film are especially vulnerable once they realize that their deep sea diving trip includes some unwelcome and very ghoulish guests.Creators of the gory French horror flick "Inside," Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are wading into strange waters once more. Shot largely underwater on a small budget, "The Deep House"...

Blacklist writer Chris Basler adapted Malcom Gaskill novel, which tells the story of Helen Duncan, a famous Scottish medium whose ability was put to the test and eventually became the last woman ever tried legally for Witchcraft in 1933 in London.
Duncan, an enigmatic and polarizing figure in the world of mediums, was renowned for her ability to conjure spirits of the dead – specifically loved ones of grieving families. Her ability was scrutinized when an ambitious researcher tired to debunk Duncan’s ability, leading to a harrowing experience for the medium and her family. Basler’s script will center around Duncan’s family drama with her husband and young children as she explored her supernatural abilities throughout her life.

The Conjuring movies, and all haunted house/ghost/evil possesion films, lead me back to Eddie Murphy and his take on scary places as fast as possible. Fyi – the video if Nsfw.

‘Never give up’ is a mantra we often apply to most facets of life, and rightly so. (The exception should always be watching the Witchcraft films; and one should pull that parachute early.) Jeremy Kasten’s The Attic Expeditions (2001) is a film that chased that dubious Hollywood rainbow and actually found the gold: a completed movie. Not a coherent one—by design—but completed. And it’s kind of a pip. Now Severin Films has put out this aughts curiosity with some fun extras and a solid transfer to boot. Let’s get crazy, shall we?

In its first foray into true crime programming, Peacock has ordered John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, a six-part documentary series that looks at one of the world’s most notorious serial killers. The docuseries hails from NBC News Studios and Emmy-nominated producer Rod Blackhurst (Amanda Knox) and his Witchcraft Motion Picture Compnay. It tells the story of Gacy through his own words, those who were forever changed by his unspeakable deeds and those who believe that the full truth about the case remains concealed to this day, according to Peacock. It features a multi-hour interview with Gacy himself from prison, most of which has never been seen, as well as exclusive audio and video interviews, including with one of his closest confidantes and his second ex-wife.

Here’s a title for you: Demon Witch Child (1975). This is the kind of title that conjures up images of crucifixes, and vomit, and crises of faith; a title that demands you confront your own relationship with the spiritual and contextualize your role in existence.
This is not that film.
Released in March in its native Spain, Demon Witch Child (a Rob Zombie song title if I’ve ever heard one) didn’t haunt Stateside drive-ins until May of the following year. Pay no heed to the critics, who immediately dismissed this as another The Exorcist rip off; instead, Demon Witch Child (aka La endemoniada and The Possessed) picks some of the strangest angles to come at that revered material from - so much so that it ends up doing its own thing in peculiar and fun ways.

A man is kept captive by a sinister elderly couple in a slick piece of schlock that recalls far better and scarier movies
In Halloween hoodoo horror Spell, protagonist Marquis is trying to escape a past of violence and poverty, a dogged struggle mirroring that of the film’s makers simultaneously trying to escape comparisons to past thrillers Skeleton Key and Misery, both sides as doomed as the other. There’s a cinematic slickness to the film (it was intended to be released theatrically until the pandemic) that separates it from its more noticeably shoddier fright night competitors but it’s mostly a familiar, if not entirely fruitless, trudge down a well-trodden path, one that takes us into, at times, questionable territory.

If you grew up reading Darkside Magazine in the early 90s and regularly frequented your local video rental shop, as I did, you couldn’t help but know all about the UK VHS label Colourbox. Not a huge distributor, at least compared to others at the time, Colourbox were probably one of the most iconic – at least for me – VHS labels the UK had; and that’s mainly thanks to the fantastic line-up of films they released on VHS: Bad Blood, Bad Taste, Creepozoids, Dr. Alien, The Imp, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (though without the word “chainsaw” in the title thanks to stupid UK censorship at the time), the ever-awesome Intruder and Ghosthouse.

Premiering on Sunday, Feb. 9, the series follows the members of the Triangle Research and Investigation Group, or Trig team. Their leader is long-time captain and former Coast Guardsman Paul “Moe” Mottice, with his first mate and engineer Mike Still, who has spent thousands of hours inside the Bermuda Triangle, by his side.
They’re joined by a Chuck Meier, a former Navy rescue diver, sheriff’s deputy, and military contractor, who will take the reins of the investigation both on land and underwater. Dave Cziko, a former Army Cavalry scout and rescue diver, will help them explore the ocean floor for evidence.

While July 28th may be a light day in terms of the amount of horror and sci-fi titles making their home entertainment debuts, we do have an interesting assortment of films and TV to look forward to. Kino Lorber has dug up two classics—The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein and Cherry 2000 (starring Melanie Griffith)—which are being released on Blu-ray this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has another underrated genre gem getting the HD treatment as well—the horror western Ghost Town.
For all you MST3K fans out there, Shout! Factory is putting out another collection of campy films that you’ll be able to add to your collections this week and Bayview Entertainment also has a double feature of cult movies from Germany—Strangler of the Tower / Monster of London—arriving on DVD.

The deserted town the Brady family got trapped in on their way to the Grand Canyon is charming compared to the one in 1988's Ghost Town. On July 28th, Scream Factory will release Ghost Town on Blu-ray, and we've been provided with three copies to give away.
Ghost Town synopsis: "A dusty ghost town, seemingly abandoned, holds the lives of its original inhabitants in an animated netherworld for 100 years…
When a modern-day sheriff's deputy is lured to a desolate, spooky ghost town in search of a missing woman, he comes face-to-face with a malevolent spirit from the town's past. The spell of death and suffering over the undead townspeople must end to set them free from eternal pain. The horrors of a possessed outlaw, in a time-suspended dimension are only the setting for a frightening battle for the mind, nerves and flesh.
Starring Franc Luz (The Nest, When Harry Met Sally), Jimmie F. Skaggs (Oblivion,...

Witchery
Then, a new address brings new frights as the immortal David Hasselhoff and The Exorcist's Linda Blair turn up the terror in Witchery. When a terrible storm leaves a motley assortment of people stranded on an island resort, they soon find they have...

While their contributions to horror and exploitation cinema in the ’70s and ’80s can never be understated, the Italians had a funny habit of co-opting unrelated movies and branding them as sequels to one another despite the fact that they were never designed as such. When Lucio Fulci made his classic Zombie in 1979, it was released as Zombi 2 in Europe despite having nothing to do with George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, originally released as Zombi overseas. Sam Raimi’s first two Evil Dead films played under the titles La Casa and La Casa 2, which wouldn’t be anything unusual if there weren’t three more totally unrelated La Casa movies released after the fact. The implication is that these movies were sequels to the Evil Dead series. They were not.

Witchery - or La Casa 4 / Witchcraft: Evil Encounters - has a bit of an interesting and slightly confusing history behind it for the horror fan to soak in, for you see, when Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead came out, it was re-titled La Casa in Italy.
So after Evil Dead II came out, producer Joe D’Amato continued on with the horror film Ghosthouse (La Casa 3), which was dubbed the “unofficial Italian sequel” to Evil Dead II, despite having no connection whatsoever to that film and the storyline.
Are you still with me? Alright, so there are actually five La Casa films all up and all of them with individual horror stories that don’t connect, which leads me to the one I just watched: Witchery - an obscure and rather sadistic little horror film that up until a few days ago,...

The Exorcist is one of the most haunting and terrifying stories ever committed to celluloid and, despite the litany of possession films and advancements in computer graphics that now dominate the horror landscape, it has remained a classic because it manages to situate the fantastic in the realistic. Director William Friedkin's 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty's best-selling novel continues to draw an audience because though it's a terrifying tale, it is also a deeply human story.
At the center of The Exorcist is a young girl, Regan MacNeil, played by Linda Blair, and it is her possession that sets the movie on its course, but the film itself is held to together by Blair's work. Though only 13 years old at the time of shooting, her performance has become one of the most iconic and celebrated in horror. As the film progresses, Regan changes from a sweet young girl into a terrifying demonic figure,...
