For a symbol that’s often regarded as the true mascot of the Halloween season, it’s strange that pumpkins aren’t the focus of more horror movies – especially when you consider the spooky folklore surrounding jack ‘o lanterns. Sure, pumpkins are featured in several popular franchises, but they’re usually relegated to atmospheric set dressing meant to enhance the seasonal mood.
However, that’s not always the case. And with Halloween finally upon us, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest pumpkins in horror! After all, it’s only a matter of time before these autumn gourds begin fighting back against the folks who gleefully mutilate them year after year.
In order to keep things interesting, we’ll only be including a single pumpkin per franchise while also disregarding the overall quality of the movies that they appear in. We also won...

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

This essay by Akela Cooper on her favorite horror movie of all time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
In 1988, Stan Winston, then mostly known for his incredible work as a special effects artist, made his directorial debut with a low-budget film inspired by a Gothic poem. That film was “Pumpkinhead.”
“Pumpkinhead” only got a limited release in theaters. Fatefully, one of those theaters happened to be near my small town in southeastern Missouri. My parents saw the film and came home talking about how good it was. This inspired my brother, around 13 at the time, to ask to see it. I was eight, so I can’t say if it was my parents’ review that swayed me or the fact that everyone in my family was going to see this thing and I didn’t want to be left out,...

American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?
It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow."
When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and US horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

"Gremlins" is a holiday classic — a fun, nasty little monster movie that's perfect to revisit when Christmas rolls around. In "Gremlins," a small Norman Rockwell-like town descends into chaos when a group of mischievous monsters run amok. The monsters, the gremlins, spring forth from the body of a cute little critter known as a Mogwai, named Gizmo. While Gizmo is nice and cuddly, the gremlins are a bunch of slimy perverts who love to smoke cigarettes, destroy property, and kill people. All of this plays hell with the holiday season of poor local loser Billy (Zach Galligan), who is gifted Gizmo by his father (Hoyt Axton), a struggling inventor who can't quite get the hang of the whole "inventing" thing.
Also in the movie: Billy's very good dog named Barney. Barney, played by a dog actor named Mushroom (omg, adorable) is a very good movie dog — his reactions during scenes are perfect.

Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.
Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

With the recent news that Tubi surpassed Max, Disney+ and Paramount+, it got me thinking about how far the service has come. It was mostly just seen as a joke but now it’s beating some of the heavy hitters. I’m not exactly shocked as even my grandparents have proclaimed their love for Tubi. The ease of access is always going to be the biggest winner for the average viewer. Plus the fact that it’s Free doesn’t hurt either. At a time where other streaming services are adding ads of their own and increasing their paid tiers to absurd prices, services like Tubi become more and more appealing.
Tubi has come a long way since its days of direct-to-streaming shlock. Sure, there are classics like Child’s Play, Interview with the Vampire, Pumpkinhead, The Descent and Near Dark. But what about some titles that are more off the beaten path?...

‘Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ – 10 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentaries
If you enjoyed Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls on Screambox, the Blu-ray is a treasure trove. The horror-comedy is accompanied by three different commentary tracks featuring writer-director-editor-star Andrew Bowser and various crew members, among other special features.
Bowser is naturally funny, seamlessly slipping in Onyx-isms, but he’s also not afraid to get real. There’s a solo director’s track, a commentary focused on the production alongside actress/producer Olivia Taylor Dudley and producer Clark Baker, and a sound commentary joined by sound designer/supervising sound editor Mike James Gallagher.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Onyx the Fortuitous commentaries…
1. The film was intended to start with Bartok removing his eye.
Bowser intended to give viewers a taste of the horrors to come with a cold open that would introduce Jeffrey Combs as Bartok the Great in a scene in which he removes his own eye.

Jerry Macaluso, formerly of Sota Toys and Pop Culture Shock Collectibles, is the man behind Syndicate Collectibles, and he’s acquired all kinds of licenses including Ghoulies, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, The Howling, and Pumpkinhead.
These upcoming collectibles are regularly teased on the official Syndicate Collectibles Instagram account, where Jerry has revealed that he’s also got the Army of Darkness license.
In addition to an incredible Ash Williams statue, the company took to Instagram this week to tease a full size replica of Ash’s chainsaw hand from the 1992 Sam Raimi sequel!
The company writes, “Yes, we are actually making Ash’s iconic chainsaw hand from Army of Darkness! This finely crafted prop replica is not just for show — it roars to life with authentic sounds!

Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

The episode of The Test of Time covering Pumpkinhead was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The horror landscape is filled to the brim with icons and mascots that were successful and failures. The big ones like Freddy, Jason, and Michale speak for themselves, hence only needing their first names mentioned here. You could even go another round with Pinhead, the Leprechaun or Leatherface for that matter. Looking down the aisle at the literal murderer’s row of horror movie villains, you can’t shake a stick without hitting some one-off baddies that were clearly meant for multi-movie stardom but due to box office or critical hate were relegated to one movie. Killers like Horace Pinker from Shocker, Dr. Decker from Nightbreed, and Cropsey from The Burning. What about those stuck...

After John Carpenter made "Halloween" in 1978, the director wasn't terribly interested in making a sequel. When it came time to write the screenplay for "Halloween II," however, a reluctant Carpenter sat in front of his typewriter, hammered on beers, kind of at a loss as to where this story was going to go. It was only by mere creative desperation that Carpenter conceived of the notion that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was secretly Michael Myers' sister.
In the first "Halloween," Michael Myers was played by various actors, although mostly by Nick Castle, an old friend of Carpenter's and a film director in his own right. In "Halloween II," Michael was played by a stuntman named Dick Warlock, an experienced performer who appeared in films like "The Love Bug" (he drove Herbie), "Blazing Saddles," and Carpenter's "Escape from New York."

Jeff Burr, director of “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” “From a Whisper to a Scream” and “Straight Into Darkness,” has died. He was 60.
Director-writer Jim Wynorski shared the news of Burr’s death on Facebook, writing that he “passed away last night [Oct. 10] in his sleep.”
Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. He later directed several entries in the “Pumpkinhead” and “Puppet Master” franchises, including “Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings” (1993), “Puppet Master 4” (1993), “Puppet Master 5” (1995) and “Puppet Master: Blitzkrief Massacre” (2018).
Burr was born in Aurora, Ohio, on July 18, 1963, and grew up in Dalton, Ga. He attended USC, but dropped out after his third year alongside fellow director Kevin Meyer to finish their American civil war short “Divided We Fall.” His feature-length directorial debut was 1987’s “From a Whisper to a Scream,” starring Vincent Price, Clu Gulager and Terry Kiser.

Jeff Burr, a horror director whose resume includes the Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, died Tuesday at age 60 in Dalton, Georgia, from complications from a stroke, his friend, actor Eric Spudic, confirmed.
Burr was not the first choice for New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), but came aboard after others dropped out. The R-rated fim grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
That established his credentials in the genre. From there, he directed Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).
His other films incuded Eddie Presley (1992), a film that has Quentin Tarantino and Bruce Campbell playing asylum attendants, and cowrote and directed the World War II drama Straight Into Darkness (2004).

Jeff Burr, the horror specialist who directed Vincent Price in one of his last movies and entries in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, has died. He was 60.
Burr died Tuesday in his sleep in Dalton, Georgia, of apparent complications from a stroke, his longtime friend, actor Eric Spudic, told The Hollywood Reporter.
After several other directors had dropped out, Burr came aboard at the last minute to helm New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), this installment starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain.
He said it took 11 tries before the MPAA would sign off on an ‘R’ rating for the film, which grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
Burr went on to direct Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).

Don’t ever assault a possible witch, light her house on fire, dig up her Pet Semetary backyard and use the vial of blood you found next to her book of the dead to resurrect the town monster, K? Equally, don’t ever watch Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings right after watching the original Pumpkinhead. It’s not meant to happen that way.
Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings forgoes the typical sequel that actually tries to live up to its predecessor and goes straight for the fourth-to-seventh sequel package. It does not pass go nor collect $200 but rather heads straight to video and parks its barely running, smoke engulfed 1993 Ford truck on Camp Avenue. Many hate it for that reason. I understand.
I also happen to enjoy the ever lovin’ shit out of it.

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

Director Jack Hill’s 1967 film Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (watch it Here) – which boasts a cast that includes Lon Chaney Jr. and Sid Haig – ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites. Rob Zombie clearly took some inspiration from Spider Baby when he was making House of 1000 Corpses, and back in 2007 we heard that a remake was in the works, coming from the Night of the Living Dead 3D team of director Jeff Broadstreet and writer Robert Valding. The one didn’t end up making it into production… but a couple weeks ago, it was confirmed that filming had just wrapped on a version of the remake that’s coming our way from Scs Entertainment and director Dustin Ferguson (Cocaine Cougar). Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a trailer for the Spider Baby remake, and you can check it...

The idea of the “movie star” is usually reserved for the uber-famous; Margot Robbie, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The occasional director like Jordan Peele or Christopher Nolan, filmmakers so well established they have their own font. But in the genre world, it’s different. As much as you might see a crowd turn out in force for the game-changing work of a John Carpenter, or a Michelle Yeoh, you’re just as likely to see lines around the block for Dick Smith, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin, Greg Nicotero, Phil Tippett or Tom Savini – Hollywood’s most lauded special effects and make-up artists. The physical creators of some of the most iconic characters in cinema history: our movie monsters.

For a community of die-hard, genre-loving film fans who grew up crouched over tiny glass TV screens, the holy grail has arrived. Some of the cult film world’s most influential (and most obscure) releases, projected large and loud, on an IMAX screen the size of a building.
Bristol’s new(ish) Forbidden Worlds Film Festival returns for a second year, from 18th-21st May, with a frankly ridiculous line-up of big-screen treats. Three strands that very much speak for themselves: Creature Creators (stop-motion pioneers and practical effects wizards), Video Shop Archives (old school cult classics), and Michelle Yeoh (nuff said). Kicking off with a Stan Winston double-feature on opening night, showcasing Winston’s iconic effects work in The Terminator, before a rare theatrical screening of his directorial debut Pumpkinhead, Forbidden Worlds is really going there with unusual, one-off events.

It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1988 release Pumpkinhead (watch it Here), the feature directorial debut of legendary special effects artist Stan Winston. To find out all about Pumpkinhead, check out the video embedded above!
Winston crafted the story for Pumpkinhead with Richard C. Weinman and Mark Patrick Carducci, drawing inspiration from a poem by Ed Justin. Carducci then wrote the screenplay with Gary Gerani. Pumpkinhead has the following synopsis:
After his son dies in a hit-and-run accident, Ed Harley seeks revenge against the teenagers responsible. With the help of a local witch, Ed summons the vengeful demon Pumpkinhead to hunt and kill the group of friends. But when Ed discovers a bond between himself and the creature, he begins to have second thoughts about employing the vicious monster, and...

After missing out on Halloween III, iconic slasher Michael Myers made his triumphant return to the screen in 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – and you can here all about that in the video found Here. Halloween 4 had a shocking cliffhanger ending. Our little heroine Jamie Lloyd picked up a pair of scissors and attacked her adoptive mother, seeming to have inherited the evil killer instinct of her uncle Michael Myers. Some fans were disappointed that the following year’s Halloween 5 (get it Here) brushed aside the idea of Jamie becoming a killer. Maybe they would have been satisfied with the alternative script for the sequel that was written by Shem Bitterman, Halloween 5: The Killer Inside Me. That’s the unmade Halloween sequel we’re digging into with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie video series, which you can...

Will Speck’s Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is snapping up dollars during Thursday previews at the box office. The family-friendly affair inspired by the classic children’s book sank its sharp teeth into 575K thanks to showtimes that started at 3 Pm in 3,453 locations. Following close behind is David O. Russell’s star-studded Amsterdam, nabbing 550K in preview dollars.
While Sony is delighted to share Lyle’s adventures with audiences, the studio isn’t betting on a big payday for the CGI and live-action hybrid. Sony analysts expect the film to sing the tune of 11M-12M, while industry experts say it could swim toward 15M-18M. Sony is now bringing the movie to theaters to take advantage of the Indigenous People holiday weekend when 42 of K-12 schools are on vacation. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, is sitting at 67 on Rotten Tomatoes, with most reviews saying the movie is an entertaining romp around the Big Apple.

The release of Ti West’s ‘Pearl’ this weekend raises the question of which other horror classics would benefit from the prequel treatment.
Ti West has pulled off an impressive feat in 2022 by not only introducing audiences to Maxine, Pearl, and the world of X, but fleshing it out into its own horror trilogy within the span of a year. Pearl builds upon the ideas that Ti West first explored in X, only to push them in new directions and through a completely distinct filter. It’s a movie that both stands on its own, but also immediately makes the viewer want to rewatch X to view the film with greater insight.
Horror prequels debatably have an even more contentious reputation than sequels do since a lot of the time they rob characters or concepts of their initial mystique and a level of suspense is missing since audiences know what lies ahead on some level.

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.
While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...
