The Venice Film Festival officially kicked off Wednesday evening with an emotional Sigourney Weaver receiving the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award. Enthused Weaver from the Lido’s Sala Grande stage, “I want to roar!” The three-time Oscar nominee thanked the festival for what she called a “jet-fuel of encouragement,” adding, “I can’t believe I’m here.”

Weaver praised the festival for its “pride of Golden Lions,” saying her statue will be sitting next to her on the plane home and quipping, “My husband will have to get used to having it in bed with me.”

The tribute came during the opening ceremony for the 81st annual Venice fest, which opened tonight with the world premiere of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Ahead of the world premiere of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the iconic star of films such as “Alien,” “Avatar” and “Gorillas in the Mist” was awarded the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in honor of her work spanning 45 years.

“I’m sure I’m dreaming,” she said on receiving the award. “Thank you for this jet fuel of encouragement.” She later said that her Golden Lion was “the most astonishing honor I can imagine,” adding that the statue would be “sitting next to me on the plane, it will be next to be in the gondola and my husband will have to get used to having it in bed with us.”

Before being given the award, there was a surprise video message from Weaver’s “Avatar” director James Cameron, who noted that she was “way over due for that Oscar.

Some exciting Star Wars news this morning as The Mandalorian & Grogu has cast its first major supporting role. 

As per The InSneider newsletter (and confirmed by multiple trades), 3x Academy Award-nominee Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of Disney and Lucasfilm's next Star Wars film, which is expected to begin production at the tailend of this year. 

The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau (Iron Man; Iron Man 2; The Lion King) will helm and produce the upcoming feature, with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni also serving as producers.

My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.

He started out as a clapper boy in the late 1950s, and worked on dozens of distinguished films over the next five decades, as camera assistant, operator and as director of photography leading specialist units. A few titles give a flavour: Battle of Britain (1969); Catch 22 (1970); the television series The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-74), on which he was camera operator for all 52 episodes; three Bond movies in the 1970s; A Bridge Too Far (1977); Krull (1983); A Passage to India (1984); The Jewel of the Nile (1985); King Kong Lives (1986); Gorillas in the Mist (1988); and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009).

Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.

Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.

"Alien" is a watershed horror and science-fiction film; many have tried to recapture its foreboding magic but director Ridley Scott is confident no one can beat his classic.

The film follows the seven-person crew of the space mining vessel Nostromo; in the 22nd century, space travel is the job of regular working Joes. They pick up a distress signal and, in investigating, pick up an eighth passenger: the titular beast, a phallic and half-cybernetic horror spawned from a human (specifically John Hurt's Kane) but utterly devoid of humanity. The alien blends into the leaky, industrial hull of the Nostromo, and as it picks off the crew one by one, their goal shifts from destroying it to escaping it.

Next year marks the 45th birthday of "Alien," but it still holds up no matter its age. However, in the decades since its release, more than half the cast has passed on.

Among the wreckage of an old burnt out car, a blood-soaked mattress is lamentably gotten rid of in Gareth Malone’s hauntingly touching dramatic short Fly-Tipping. Malone, who made the film as part of his Filmmaking Ma at the University of the West of Scotland, quietly immerses the audience in his characters’ struggles with minimal dialogue as he allows the grey scapes and tones of the film to speak for themselves. As Fly-Tipping progresses it’s hard not to battle with intense feelings of empathy, dislike, pity and anger for both of its protagonists but the focus is immovably drawn to Margo, played by Sky Sinclair, who Malone realised was the heart of his film early on in development. Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.

Thirty years ago, the “60 Minutes” correspondent “huffed and puffed for two months to get myself in training” for what she has said was “one of the best days of my life,” a visit with the famous Rwanda mountain primates that were the basis of the 1988 film “Gorillas in the Mist.” Her stamina work at that time didn’t do much for her, she recalls in an interview. “I almost died climbing to find them.” Despite her work, “what I failed to take into account was the altitude. It just did me in. Luckily, there was a porter or a guide who held my hand and basically made sure I didn’t quit or die.”

Stahl recently attempted the feat again for the CBS newsmagazine and managed to find the gorillas and get down the slopes.

Long live the queen, but not Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes record. The three-time champ suffered her first loss(es) on Sunday night, losing Best TV Drama Actress to Emma Corrin, her co-star on “The Crown,” and Best Film Supporting Actress to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritanian.”

Colman had entered the night with a perfect 3-for-3 record, having garnered Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Night Manager” in 2017, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown” last year.

Michael Apted, who has died aged 79, was a director who moved with ease between socially conscious documentaries and feature films with a special focus on female achievement.

In the latter camp was Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), for which Sissy Spacek won the best actress Oscar for playing the country and western singer Loretta Lynn, and Gorillas in the Mist (1988), starring Sigourney Weaver as the murdered conservationist Dian Fossey. He also enjoyed commercial success with the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999) and the Cs Lewis adaptation The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

Michael Apted was 22 when he joined the crew of “Seven Up!,” a British made-for-television documentary that profiled 14 children from different class backgrounds. That made him 15 years senior to his subjects, with whom he maintained contact, establishing an almost familial connection that spanned more than half a century.

Apted did not direct the original 1964 documentary, as is commonly thought, nor was that initial installment such an important landmark in the field of nonfiction filmmaking. The breakthrough came in Apted’s decision to continue the project with an hour-long follow-up TV movie seven years later, “7 Plus Seven” — and again every seven years after that — revisiting as many of the children as would agree to participate as they grew up, found their ways in life, fell in love, married, divorced and so on.
