Rock ‘n’ roll and horror: a match made in hell! From electrifying riffs to spine-chilling screams, these heavy metal mashups create a headbanging, heart-pounding experience that resonates with rebels and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you’re a fan of rebellious music or cinema of the fringe, nearly everyone can agree they go together like peanut butter and jelly.
What makes them such perfect partners? Perhaps it’s their shared love for the dark, the dangerous, and the fantastical. Rock ‘n’ roll has always been the music of outcasts, and horror dares to delve into our deepest fears. Together, they create a symphony of shock that thrills and chills.
From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

Apple TV+ has won a bidding war for "Sugar," a new series starring Colin Farrell. Netflix was also vying for the series, which Deadline bills as a genre-bender and describes as "an LA-set contemporary take on the private detective story."
Beyond that, not much is known of the plot at this point, but "Sugar" hails from creator Mark Protosevich, who wrote "The Cell," "Poseidon," and Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake, and who co-wrote "I Am Legend." He also received a story credit on "Thor," and IMDb still has him attached to an adaptation of the comic "Freakshow." However, that project was first announced over a decade ago and...

Have you ever had a nightmare about being chased by zombies? Most people have. Do you think zombies have nightmares about us? These are the kinds of questions that keep my monkey brain somewhat sated; especially when I’m watching Zombie Nightmare (1987), a film that proffers voodoo, baseball, Batman, Thor, and Motorhead. So many queries, so few answers, so much fun.
Filmed in the summer of ‘86 in Quebec, Zombie Nightmare was supposed to have a Black-centric cast but writer (and ghost co-director) John Fasano (Black Roses) was told by director Jack Bravman (The Wetter the Better) that they’d have a hard sell with foreign investors, so the characters were changed. The more things stay the same, the more they stay the same.
Reviews were unkind, but the film somehow ended up grossing over a million and a half worldwide against a $180,000 budget after New World picked it up and...

Friday night Twilight Zone reruns, Saturday afternoon Frankenstein matinees, and Sunday morning Godzilla flicks; these were the films that introduced my lifelong love affair with horror films. My parents were the influencers, the ones that nurtured my fascinations with the fantastic, weird, and wonderful world of genre film. I was taught from them to respect the classics, the films of Hitchcock, the genius of Lon Chaney, and the storytelling of Sterling, but they also emphasized an understanding and study of the past. These guidelines have, and continue, to shape my thoughts and ideas about film.
But in 1988, the introduction to the sinister and suspenseful nature of horror was still fresh for a middle-schooler who couldn't get enough of watching scary movies in the dark with stove-top popcorn and Rc Cola. Growing up in a lower- to middle-class family with young siblings and hard-working parents didn’t leave a lot of...

Aubrie Sellers refuses to fit the mold of your average female country musician — and in an exclusive look at the making of the “Sit Here and Cry” music video, the singer proves she has no plans to deviate anytime soon.
“When I was thinking of video ideas for this song, I wanted it to reflect the energy of the music and express the big eye roll that ‘Sit Here and Cry’ is,” Sellers explained to People exclusively. “I had a very specific visual vision for it, and when I saw Sam Siske’s reel I knew he was going to get it.

Ghoulies
Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay, Scott Thomson, Ralph Seymour | Written by Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy | Directed by Luca Bercovici
Ghoulies 2
Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing, Kerry Remsen, Donnie Jeffcoat, Dale Wyatt | Written by Charlie Dolan, Dennis Paoli, Luca Bercovici | Directed by Albert Band
For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone.

I’ve always seen Christmas and New Year’s as the one-two punch of all holidays. All the prep that goes into Christmas to culminate in just one brief and fleeting day, and then being immediately followed by the end of the year. That year that has etched its last two digits into our subconscious, and dies hard when trying to learn to write or type the new two digits for the following year. New Year’s is also a time when you can add one more year to how long it’s been since you passed some of life’s memorable and major rites of passage, like high school or college graduation, or even how long ago your favorite films came out.
It can be a bit melancholy if you let it. One thing that is definitely a high point of all this closure...

Deathgasm. That name conjures up a myriad of things in your mind. A myriad of things that Deathgasm probably contains in its short, but packed, 90 minutes running time. From death by dildo, decapitations, eviscerations, disembowelment, dismemberment and more. And metal. Lots and lots of heavy metal. Old-school metal, death metal, black metal; but definitely Not any hair metal!
The movie tells the story of Brodie, a metal-loving kid sent to live with his bible-bashing relatives who is an outcast at home And at school. When he meets a kindred spirit in Zakk at the local record shop, they decide – along with Brodie only two schoolfriends – to start their own band, the titular Deathgasm (they rejected the name Intestinal Bungee Jump). Sadie Stone might have left Nashville before the end of the season, but Laura Benanti‘s heart is firmly ensconced in the ABC drama’s goings-on.
Take, for instance, her thoughts on Deacon’s sister Beverly, a hard-to-love character who grudgingly donated part of her liver to her ailing brother and who might have died at the end of the season finale.
“That beyotch!” Benanti says, chuckling. “Ugh, she’s so crazy. I hate her!” She calls out the title of Scarlett’s ballad of pain, inspired by Beverly’s borderline abusive mothering. ‘Black Roses! Black Roses!'”

The first scene plays out like an anti-thesis to the satanic and heavy metal antics that the film devotes itself too. The setup is quaint. A young father happily shaves his face. A young mother is cooking breakfast, and their son yells that he can’t wait to scramble eggs with her! All of the sudden demons pop out of the oven and kill the mom and dad. Thus begins Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare – also known as The Edge of Hell in certain parts of the world – perhaps the most definitive entry into “Metalsploitation”.
What is “Metalsploitation”? One of my friends brought the term to my attention, and I’m not sure if that subgenre classification already exists, so if not congratulations to him for inventing it. Metalsploitation exists in this bizarre era of cinema where horror films and heavy metal artists and music met. It produced cult classics like this,...

Shocking as it may seem given the amount of horror flicks I review here on Nerdly, I’m not just a horror fan. My movie-loving passion is in fact split between three genres: horror, teen comedies and action movies. As much as I can appreciate low-budget horror flicks I can also appreciate low-budget action movies – which, at least from major studios, are few and far between these days. Which is one of the reasons I was excited to check out Sniper: Legacy.
The other reason? Well, as a teenager I used to love Impact Magazine. It really was my film bible, I’d religiously pick up each and every issue from the newsagents near where I used to catch the bus to college; in...

The first-ever Nashville cast concert tour hit New York City on May 6, with Charles “Chip” Esten (Deacon), Clare Bowen (Scarlett), Jonathan Jackson (Avery), Sam Palladio (Gunnar), Chris Carmack (Will), Chaley Rose (Zoey), and Will Chase (Luke) in tow. They performed songs heard on the show, as well as originals. In honor of Bowen’s song “Cheap Red Wine,” which will be on the album she’s currently cutting, Mandi Bierly and Samantha Highfill grabbed a couple of glasses after the show and discussed their notes on the set list, Esten’s biceps, and the adorableness that was Chase’s girlfriend,...

Thank goodness there's a four-week break before we get a new episode of "Nashville," because Wednesday's (April 2) episode was a doozy. There were so many revelations, confrontations and emotions running high that it's going to take four weeks to recover from the roller coaster that was "Crazy." Let's dig right in to the drama, y'all!
Even though Maddie took down the video she titled "Maddie Claybourne," everyone knows the Internet is forever. Someone got hold of the video and it went viral. Even the ladies on "The View" made a cameo to discuss the murky waters of Maddie's paternity, calling her Rayna and Deacon's "love child." When the paparazzi get vicious, Rayna gets worried when she can't reach Deacon. She freaks out, thinking he might have started drinking again.
Knowing that Deacon would head to the lake house they were supposed to live in way back when, Rayna and Luke...

What the heck is going on with Scarlett?
On Wednesday (Jan. 29) night's "Nashville," the blonde, doe-eyed country singer (Clare Bowen) was a total mess. Her touring was still taking a toll on her, and it was obvious just by looking at her: She had dark circles around her eyes, her hair was a frizzy birds' nest, she was dressing in dark clothes (gasp!) and her eyes were constantly bloodshot. She was tired, and her energy was gone.
All this couldn't have happened at a worse time, either: Rayna (Connie Britton) set up a meeting for Scarlett with Liam (Michiel Huisman) to work on her album, and the rocker had zero patience for her complaints about being tired and her songs that were clearly shallow and didn't come from here. Seriously, Scarlett was singing about slammin' whiskey and dirty dancin'? Puh-lease.
That's when Liam pulled a trick so dirty that it was at first horrifying,...

Rock and Roll Nightmare aka Edge of Hell (1987)
Directed by: John Fasano
Written by: Jon Mikl Thor
Cast: Jon Mikl Thor (John Triton), Jillian Peri (Lou Anne), Frank Dietz (Roger), David Lane (Max), Teresa Simpson (Randy)
Gateway films can take a horror aficionado down roads to a destination that resurrects memories of humble beginnings as a young horror fan. I found “Trick or Treat” on YouTube in its entirety a few weeks back, and nostalgia overpowered me to the point that I had to go down the rabbit hole of horror and hair metal to see how far it goes. “Trick of Treat” seems to be the one that everyone remembers, mainly because of Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne making brief cameos, and Skippy from “Family Ties” sporting long hair, and dropping the “F” word from time to time. Stuff like that is downright unforgettable.

FEARnet hit the ‘Elvira Mistress of the Art Show’ show and signing this past Saturday in Hollywood, CA, and while there sat down for a chat with horror icon and celebrity Cassandra Peterson, better known to genre fans as ‘Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.’ Held at the retail store Monster-a-Gogo (7361 Melrose Avenue), the showing consisted of Elvira-inspired art pieces by such notable artists as Elizabeth McGrath, Queenie, Lucky Hellcat, Allan Graves, Tim Polecat and Gris Grimly, among others, and a long and unwavering queue of black-clad fans eager for an autograph from and photo-op with the star.
For those unfamiliar (although I highly doubt that there’s a FEARnet reader unaware of Elvira’s genre pedigree), Cassandra Peterson’s alter ego entered the public’s conscious in the early 80’s as the host of the Los Angeles weekend Khj-tv horror show Movie Macabre, in which her risqué double entendres,...

Reel Evil filmmaker Danny Draven announced today via his Facebook page word on his next feature project, a flick titled Hair Metal Massacre, as well as a look at the film’s teaser art. Check it out!
States Draven, who helmed the recently released Reel Evil for Full Moon, “My production company will kick off the new year with Hair Metal Massacre. I'll be producing and directing. Expect gore, mayhem, killer music tracks, rock stars, and other surprises!”
With the tagline "The 80’s Are Back... From the Dead!," Hair Metal Massacre sounds to be channeling the tone of that decade's cult fave, Satanic metal flicks Trick or Treat and Black Roses (which in this writer’s opinion wouldn’t be a bad thing).
Draven promises to keep us in the loop as the film moves closer to principal photography so stay tuned for that and for exclusive word from the set.

In the 80s, rock music and horror movies went together like acid washed jeans and feathered hair. The trouble is, even though many horror movies had awesome rock soundtracks, the movies that specifically featured rock musician characters as heroes or villains varied wildly in quality. Although the rock horror movie has mostly gone the way of the 80s, I’m not sure any other type of music will ever have such a successful love affair with horror. I can’t picture people turning up for a movie called Pop Divas of the Apocalypse, or Death by Dubstep, or even Bloody Pit of Techno Bastards. But what do I know? I’m still stuck in the 80s. Here are 10 of the movies that are stuck with me.

Welcome back to Junkfood Cinema; we’re so metal we can’t get through airport security. Every week during the month of October we will be showcasing the shockingly schlocky, the horrifyingly horrible, and the most terrifyingly terrible horror films we can get our claws on. We will drive a lampooning stake through the film’s heart and laugh maniacally as it takes longer to die than Paul Reubens in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But then, because we learned nothing from The Evil Dead, we will resurrect the film by reciting passages from the necronomicon of pure adoration. To complete the blood ritual, we will pair the film with a insidiously delicious snack food item in the hopes that we can create for you a completely interactive horror film experience by actually shortening your life. This Week’s Beast: Black Roses The basic story here, and I do mean basic, is...

I was totally on-board with Rob Zombie’s cinematic output, that is, until I realized that he could only tell stories about screwy, murderous rednecks and their nameless rabble of victims. Each of his films offer just a slight variation on that theme, and while they’re amusing on a purely visceral level, anyone looking for story or substance will be left with long-haired hillbillies and their penchant for mayhem. Zombie’s upcoming endeavor “The Lords of Salem” sounds like any of those rock-oriented genre efforts from the 80′s, such as “Black Roses” and “Trick or Treat”. I’m curious to see what he does with the material. After all, it can’t be any worse than his “Halloween” films. Can it? Surely not. Here’s a super-handy plot synopsis: Heidi, a blonde rock chick, DJs at a local radio station and, together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster...

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my...
