Bradford English had a screen acting career that spanned from 1971 to 2010, and over those 39 years he racked up more than 70 credits – but for many of us, he’s best remembered for playing the drunk, abusive blowhard John Strode in the 1995 horror sequel Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Sadly, we lost English right before Halloween this year, as it has been reported that he passed away on October 25th in Pasadena, California at the age of 82.

English was born in South Orange, New Jersey on January 16, 1942. His obituary can be found online and says he “was a true force of life and was filled with love. He was a husband and a family man who was survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Cecelia Gail English. Together they created a beautiful family of four children: James Bradford English Jr., Jeffrey Brennan English, Kristin Lunney English and Colleen Margaret Theresa English.

When you have two wholly original films on your resume like Mud and Take Shelter, it’s a wonder that you’d ever consider adapting the work of others, yet that’s what Jeff Nichols has been doing for the last few years.

It’s understandable of course: Nichols has been inspired by some incredible works, having produced 2016’s Loving along with The Bikeriders earlier this year. Both films were adaptations of a sort, with the former being based on Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary and the latter adapting Danny Lyon’s book of photographs.

DirecTV this week officially debuted their free, ad-supported streaming television platform with a curated portfolio of more than 70 content channels.

Brad Pitt is reportedly being eyed to star in a new untitled science fiction movie led by The Bikeriders director Jeff Nichols. The project is set up for a 2025 filming production in Arkansas after a long-gestating process.

Jeff Nichols has reportedly managed to secure the services of Brad Pitt for his next project, a bleak story about America undergoing another Great Depression. According to World Of Reel, Nichols’ project was struggling to get off the ground and was in fact a rewritten version of a pilot TV episode that he sold to HBO called Land Of Opportunity.

The tale is said to be ‘a dystopian story set in Arkansas, about a new Great Depression where oil has run out and the dollar has collapsed.’ However, HBO chose not to press ahead with the project and instead Nichols has now adapted it into a feature film which will surely get the green light if Pitt comes on board.

In 2016, the writer/director of films like "Mud," "Take Shelter," and "Midnight Special" was tapped to direct a remake of the 1988 film "Alien Nation" by 20th Century Fox. A couple of years later, Nichols gave us an update about the project, explaining that it was set in his home state of Arkansas, would have a $100 million budget, and he referred to it as "epic." But when Disney purchased Fox in 2019, the movie fell by the wayside and it seemed to be dead forever. In early 2021, Nichols revealed that Disney asked him to expand his screenplay into a 10-episode TV series, and at the time, he was awaiting word about whether or not that version would move forward. It’s been over seven-and-a-half years since acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols last had a film in movie theaters, and with tonight’s release of The Bikeriders, the interminable wait for his sixth feature is now over. In the aftermath of his two 2016 releases, Midnight Special and Loving, Nichols knew he needed to take a step back and rejuvenate himself, creatively. However, through no fault of his own, his breather became far more prolonged than intended due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances including 2019’s Disney-Fox merger, 2020’s pandemic and 2023’s double strike.

In the case of the Disney-Fox merger that was completed in 2019, it effectively ended Nichols’ four years’ worth of development on his Alien Nation film. The Arkansas native had already been working on an original sci-fi film, but at the urging of 20th Century Fox, he agreed to retrofit his script for the sake of using a recognizable IP as a springboard.

Apple TV+ Renews “Invasion”

Apple TV+ will continue its intergalactic expansion: the streamer has announced a Season 3 renewal for its global hit “Invasion.”

The sci-fi drama series, which debuted in October 2021, follows an alien invasion of Earth through different perspectives around the world, following the events as they unfold in real-time through the eyes of five ordinary people struggling to make sense of the chaos happening before them.

His death was announced by his ex-wife, actress Susan Lavelle, in a Facebook message posted shortly after 1 a.m. today. She did not provide a cause of death.

“It is with deep profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful only child together, Haylee Graham, has passed away today,” wrote Lavelle, who met Graham when she was 20 and he was starring in Alien Nation. “We are completely devastated especially our daughter Haley. His wife, Becky was by his side.”

Born June 6, 1950, in Long Beach, CA, Graham began making appearances on episodic TV in the mid-1970s, including one-off roles in Eight Is Enough, Starsky and Hutch, Police Woman and The Incredible Hulk.

Gary Graham, who starred as the human detective who partners with an extraterrestrial newcomer to solve crimes on the Fox sci-fi television franchise Alien Nation, has died. He was 73.

Graham died Monday of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Spokane, Washington, his wife of nearly 25 years, Becky Graham, told The Hollywood Reporter.

In the Star Trek universe, Graham played the Ocampan community leader Tanis on Star Trek: Voyager in 1995; recurred as Ambassador Soval, a Vulcan ambassador to Earth, on Star Trek: Enterprise, from 2001-05; and portrayed the first officer Ragnar in Star Trek: Of Gods and Men (2007) and Star Trek: Renegades from 2015-17.

The close-knit "Star Trek" family has lost one of their own today. Actor Gary Graham, most well-known for playing the role of the Vulcan Ambassador Soval in "Star Trek: Enterprise," sadly passed away early in the morning January 23, 2024. His death was first announced in a Facebook post by his ex-wife and actor Susan Lavelle (viaParade.com). No cause of death has yet been revealed, except that it was described as "sudden." Graham was 73 years old. 

In addition to starring in "Enterprise" and even showing up for a brief appearance in "Star Trek: Voyager," Graham was more than willing to lend his talents to various roles in "Star Trek" fan films throughout the years, bringing Soval back to life in several unofficial movies that may not be formally sanctioned in the official canon of the franchise, but nonetheless speaks to the actor's passion for the character and his appreciation for the Trekkie community.

Every single person knows the sting of their favorite TV show getting canceled but it’s only gotten worse in recent years. The streaming era has been incredibly inconsistent. With an algorithm choosing the fates of shows, these days you’re lucky if a show gets ten episodes, let alone released at all. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was canceled by Netflix after a single season. Willow was not only canned by Disney+ after one season but also removed from its catalog. The same thing happened with Gordita Chronicles on HBO Max.

Streaming services like Netflix, once known for picking up canceled shows such as Arrested Development and giving creatives limitless freedom are now more known for not giving anything a chance unless it’s a massive Squid Game like success. Before word of mouth even spreads about a show, you often find out it’s canceled or removed entirely.

Back in 2014, Nichols was approached to helm the Dcu installment after his success on indie films “Take Shelter” and “Mud.” However, according to Nichols, his concept for “Aquaman” was not “ever feasible” due to its darker storylines.

One of the big reveals to come out of the infamous 2014 Sony email hack was that Warner Bros. had been in talks with indie director Jeff Nichols to helm its “Aquaman” movie starring Jason Momoa. Nichols was coming off acclaimed back-to-back dramas “Take Shelter” and “Mud” at the time. His involvement with “Aquaman” did not move beyond talks, but now Nichols is opening up a bit about what went into his failed pitch.

Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast from the Telluride Film Festival, where his latest directorial effort, “The Bikeriders,” world premiered to rave reviews and Oscar buzz, Nichols explained why his pitch for “Aquaman” was never going to be the $1 billion movie Warner Bros. ended up getting.

“I still have scenes from [‘Aquaman’] in my head that would’ve been good,” Nichols said. “They would’ve been quite different from the film that was made. It wasn’t ever feasible…...

Prolific writer Peter David is currently in rehab following a series of strokes and a mild heart attack, complicated by existing kidney problems.

His wife, Kathleen O’Shea David, updated the legendary creator’s GoFundMe, saying:

“Peter is still in rehab but that is week to week until the insurance decides that he is well enough to come home. The big hurdle is that he is a two-person assist right now. I have the door widening in the works so he can come home along with a couple of other things that will make his life easier...”

The YouTuber movie is one that's often been considered very specific. Usually, they are comedies that star and/or are made by a YouTube content creator specifically to appease their fanbase. None of these are what you can consider future Oscar contenders, but as long as they succeed in satisfying their target audience, they'll be perfectly fine. Right?

If the history of these movies is anything to go by though, a ton of YouTuber movies aren't particularly successful in winning this niche fanbase, let alone general audiences. In a way, it almost seems like the sheer amount of terrible movies with a YouTuber's name on them has set back one of YouTube's primary appeals in the first place. Patricia Heaton was born on March 4, 1958 (Patricia Heaton: Age 65) in Bay Village, Ohio to Patricia and Chuck Heaton. When Heaton was 12 her mother died of an aneurysm, leaving behind Heaton and her four siblings.

Heaton graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in drama. After graduating, Heaton moved to New York City to study with drama teacher William Esper in 1980.

Heaton’s first appearance on the Broadway stage was as part of the chorus in Don’t Get God Started in 1987. Her time on Broadway caught the attention of a casting director for ABC’s Thirtysomething where she guest-starred six times.

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.

In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.

As folks will start to pull out their sweaters and add a little pumpkin to their coffee, and they'll be in need of some at-home entertainment to match the oncoming autumn mood. For horror fans, the fall equinox (and the entire month that precedes it) is prime time, when the programming powers-that-be start adding a little more genre spice to their offerings in anticipation of Halloween.

In 1979, Stephen King was in New York for an appearance on a late-night talk show. Greeted by fans outside the studio, one man, claiming to be the author's "Number One Fan," wanted a polaroid photo with his idol instead. King was in a hurry so he relented to the request and signed the picture. The name the man gave was Mark Chapman.

Later, King couldn't say for certain whether it was the same Mark Chapman who shot John Lennon just a few hours after getting his autograph, but the incident unnerved the author. He already had a somewhat ambivalent towards his more ardent fans (via Washington Post):

Director Neill Blomkamp’s first feature film debut, “District 9,” the Johannesburg-set sci-fi, action pic was a bonafide banger. The sci-fi film took a dark theme like South Africa’s apartheid, and segregation and applied it to aliens. Sharing some DNA with the 1988 film “Alien Nation,” the film used non-humanoid aliens to establish drastic differences between the two populations. A rather large swing, the bold choices earned “District 9” four Oscar nominations in 2010, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

A rather amusing headline in a 2008 issue of The Onion read "Some Old Man Still Churning Out Marmaduke." The joke of the article was that Brad Anderson, then 83, the creator of the long-running dog-centric newspaper strip, was toiling away at his 20,000th monotonous "Marmaduke" comic in complete obscurity. Despite being a staple of the funny papers since 1953, much of Marmaduke's audience had long since ceased paying attention. Incidentally, Anderson continued to draw "Marmaduke" until his death in 2015 at the age of 91. The strip continues under the eye of Paul Anderson, his son.

Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" is — a more cynical critic might say — slowly approaching "Marmaduke" levels of tedium. There are now 34 seasons of "The Simpsons" to contend with, translating to 728 episodes, with more on the way. I’m beginning to think this Satan character holds a grudge, you know? He tries to take over the world with his kid Damien in The Omen (1976)? A bust. Teenage Damien takes another run at it in Damien Omen II (1978) and survives, but daddy is nowhere to be seen. Deadbeat. So here we are with The Final Conflict (1981), Damien grown up and preparing the throne for pa, but this time, God’s got his own present to deliver. “When does the Devil get a break?” and other burning questions are answered in this low-key yet overall effective finale. Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. Lyndon Chubbuck, a director and photographer known for such film as 2001’s “War Bride” and 2000’s “The Right Temptation,” has died. He was 67.

Chubbuck died at his home in Los Angeles on April 13. He was married to prominent acting coach Ivana Chubbuck and was a co-founder of Ivana Chubbuck Studio, which has worked with such notables as Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt and Halle Berry.

Lyndon Chubbuck also served as a partner in advertising agency Andrew Janson & Partners, where he worked on campaigns for Swatch, Paramount Pictures, E!, Sallie Mae and Miller Brewing Company. He was known for his strong social conscience and also worked on creative material for the ACLU, Amnesty International and Salvation Army.

Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Chubbuck worked steadily as a director in TV from the late 1980s through the late 1990s. His credits include episodes of such series as “Baywatch,” “Wiseguy,...

From Roswell to V to Alien Nation to Alf to The Neighbors, the alien-as-immigrant allegory is familiar and resilient stuff.
