Hank Katts has just graduated from Police Academy and is assigned to the K-9 Corps. He refuses to work there because he wants and "human partner". Later he gets a call to retrieve a dog, where he meets his new K-9 partner, Rudy/Rinty.
When a young man commits a robbery, Rudy pursues him and his girlfriend to their house and stays on them for two days. Stevie helps Maggie study for her real estate exam.
Lou's K-9 partner is killed while he was trying to protect him. Lou announces that he is leaving K-9, but pursues the man who killed his dog. Meanwhile, Maggie is arrested after arguing with a meter maid about a broken parking meter.
After Hank witnesses a cop shoot an unarmed man, he feels he needs to protect Maggie and Stevie from him since Maggie is dating him, but Maggie tells him to butt out.
K-9 assists Metro in locating a bank robber who strips during her get-away. Meanwhile, one of Maggie's clients introduces her to a possible movie script, and Hank falls for her.
Princess Rosa, a retired movie actress witnesses a shooting and someone being kidnapped and taken by helicopter but everyone is having a hard time believing her. She intends to exaggerate things by seeing the helicopter as a "space ship" and the men in suits as "aliens".
Scotty, Fred Katts' partner, comes to town and opens old and new emotions surrounding Fred's death. Both Scotty and Hank must come to terms with reality. Stevie wants to know more about his father's life.
Hank is shot during a police chase and is temporary blind. The doctors aren't sure if it's temporary or permanent. Hank is upset and is forced to quit the K-9 force.
