In Feldman’s new documentary (My) Truth: The Rape of Two Coreys, which premiered in Los Angeles on Monday, the actor, 48, alleges that his friend told him that Charlie Sheen raped Haim on set of the 1986 film Lucas. At the time Sheen was 19 and Haim was 13.

According to Entertainment Weekly, several others featured in the documentary claimed that Haim had also told them of the alleged sexual abuse, including Feldman’s ex-wife Susannah Sprague, with whom he shares son Zen, 15.

If the Artful Dodger had smartened himself up, dyed his hair, worn snazzy jackets with the sleeves rolled up, and sought an alternative career as a Jackie or My Guy cover star, he would have resembled Corey Haim at the peak of his career.

The Canadian actor, who has died unexpectedly aged 38, did not spend more than a few years in the limelight. Yet it was his chirpy, irrepressible personality, as much as the occasional high-profile film role between the mid-1980s and early 90s, that earned him the affectionate regard of mainstream audiences. Out of a meagre selection of movies, many of which went straight to video or DVD, it was the 1987 vampire romp The Lost Boys which earned him his teenybopper fanbase. The lopsided smile, impish eyes and jauntily spiked hair made him perfect pin-up fodder.

Sergeant Frank Albarren, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, tells MSNBC, "It was an apparent overdose. Unknown what type of medication." Haim, who had a long history of drug problems, is believed to have passed away between the hours of 4 A.M and 4.30 A.M local time.

Haim had reportedly been sick in the days before his death, suffering flu-like symptoms, according to TMZ. The actor had a history of drug problems and had spoken candidly of his longrunning battle with substance abuse.

Corey Haim's movie career probably reached its highpoint with one well-regarded, well-remembered vampire movie, 1987's The Lost Boys. That title became the sadly ironic tag that followed his descent from success to his tragic end, another premature Hollywood death in a shockingly short span. The cute kid with the tangled hair and the curling upper lip that hinted at hip self-awareness - well, he was sidelined. He was replaced by a spaced-out stranger who often looked bloated - he claimed at one point to have weighed 285 pounds after spending almost a decade as a shut-in, depressed and in bed.

The road to adulthood for the child star is frequently a rocky one. For Corey Haim, who has died at the age of 38, it proved, in the end, too much to negotiate. Haim's guileless, fun-loving, all-American brand of youth and confidence won him many admirers. But it was a difficult schtick to carry into adulthood.

Born in Toronto in 1971, Haim enrolled in acting lessons to help cure his shyness. He proved a natural, with a great fresh grin and an easy way with a one-liner, which won him a small role, aged 12, on TV show The Edison Twins.

His debut feature film was Firstborn, an early vehicle for then-couple Robert Downey Jr and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Haim appeared in a few TV shows over the years. He played "Larry" in 1984's The Edison Twins for two dozen episodes. A few years later, he played "Matthew Wiggins" in the short-lived Roomies sitcom which followed two very different freshman at Saginaw University.

Haim is however best remembered for his 1980s movie roles like those in Silver Bullet, Lucas, The Lost Boys and License to Drive.

He and frequent movie costar Corey Feldman starred in their own A&E improv/reality series, The Two Coreys in 2007. It lasted two seasons. According to Feldman, A&E wanted a third but he refused, as an act of tough love, to have anything to do with Haim until he got help for his substance abuse problems.

He appeared opposite Point Break actor Gary Busey as a paraplegic boy in the big screen version of Stephen King's Silver Bullet, before shooting to international stardom as the lead in 1986's Lucas - alongside Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder.

Haim went on to film eight hit movies with his child star namesake Corey Feldman, including The Lost Boys, License to Drive, Watchers and Dream A Little Dream, leading the actors to be dubbed 'The Two Coreys'.

Haim was awarded two Young Artist Awards during the 1980s - Exceptional Young Actor in TV show A Time to Live in 1985, and Best Young Actor in 1989, which he shared with Feldman for their parts in License to Drive.

But as rumours of a serious drug problem began to surface in the 1990s, his career took a dip with a string of straight-to-video movies including Blown Away and National Lampoon's Last Resort.

In 1993, he was charged for pulling out a fake handgun during a bust-up with his business manager. The charges were later reduced from felony to misdemeanour.

In 1996 he was sued for $375,000 (£250,000) after pulling out of film Paradise Bar because of his drug problem, which he had reportedly failed to mention on his insurance form. With his financial problems spiralling out of control, Haim filed for bankruptcy in 1997.

The actor reportedly checked himself into rehab 15 times in a bid to battle his drug demons, and in 2001 was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California after reportedly suffering a drug-induced stroke.

But in 2004 he moved back to his native Toronto and appeared to have overcome his problems.

In recent years, Haim attempted to resurrect his career, filming reality show The Two Coreys with Feldman in 2007, and in 2008 he shot minor scenes for Lost Boys: The Tribe, reprising his 1987 role.

The two actors' screen reunion was short-lived - Feldman, who has also struggled with drug problems, reportedly refused to continue working and communicating with Haim until he beat his addiction.

At the time of his death, Haim had signed up to appear in a number of productions, which were slated for release later this year, including The Science of Cool opposite Mischa Barton, The Throwaways alongside pop star-turned-actor Luke Goss, and action thriller The Dead Sea.

Haim was briefly engaged to Nicole Eggert, Holly Fields, and Cindi Guyer, and has previously dated Victoria Beckham and Alyssa Milano, but it is unknown if he was in a relationship at the time of his death.

Part of reporting news and events in and surrounding the film industry is always hard when reporting someone has passed away. It makes the job even harder when it is someone so young and who had so much promise earlier in their career. Corey Haim is one such tragedy. The child star has passed away at 38.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Haim passed away at 3:30 this morning from an apparent drug overdose. Haim’s history with substance abuse has been ongoing for years. According to the Lapd, he was with his mother when he passed away.

Haim made his way into the business at 13, first appearing in the 1984 film Firstborn and the TV series, “The Edison Twins.” He garnered notoriety in 1985 with the Steven King adaptation, Silver Bullet, and in the 1986 film, Lucas. In 1987, he co-starred for the first time with Corey Feldman in Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys.

Haim was found by his mother at his apartment near Burbank, CA. There's no word yet on cause of death, but TMZ is reporting that he died of an overdose.

While it's too bad that he might be remembered for all of his recent activities, including drug use, fights, and the unfortunate reality show 'The Two Coreys' that he did with frequent co-star Corey Feldman, he was actually in some good movies when he was younger. 'Lucas' and 'The Lost Boys' are great flicks. Haim also starred in two short-lived TV shows, 'The Edison Twins' in 1984 and 'Roomies' in 1987.
