So for her intimate love-making scene with Martin Hewitt, director Franco Zeffirelli kept grabbing her toe and twisting it off camera to provoke a reaction that would look like an orgasm. Shields revealed later that it hurt, and it humiliated and traumatized her so much, she "really shut down after that".
Shirley Knight begged Franco Zeffirelli to cast Rosanna Arquette, Linda Blair, Bo Derek, Carrie Fisher, Jodie Foster, Melanie Griffith, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kristy McNichol, Michelle Pfeiffer or Debra Winger for the role of Jade Butterfield, as she felt that 16-year-old Brooke Shields did not have the right talent for the role.
The MPAA awarded the initial cut of the movie an X rating. Franco Zeffirelli subsequently made several cuts in the love scenes between Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt to achieve a lower rating. The movie was resubmitted to the MPAA five times before they awarded this an R rating.
