We've finally come to the end of 2017, which means: lots of under-the-wire Oscar hopefuls! The return of the Bellas! A brand spankin' new Star Wars! Along with the final push of awards contenders (Steven Spielberg! Paul Thomas Anderson! Guillermo del Toro!), viewers can look forward to a pair of biopics about ethically compromised women, two vastly different musicals and the Rock taking on motorcycle-riding warriors and a safari's worth of jungle creatures. Oh, and James Franco giving what may arguably be the single greatest performance of the year. Yes, you read that sentence correctly.

Priyanka Chopra, former Miss India and Miss World, grabs more newsprint than Donald’s presidency or Caitlyn’s menopause. Now upon us, she’s in NYC. The usual talk shows to push Paramount’s babes and boobs in “Baywatch,” her Us film debut.
“‘Baywatch’ was a ginormous hit in India. My mom’s favorite show. I was 6 and watching it on TV. Now, with this updated version, I worried what they’d do to my favorite characters, but I couldn’t stop laughing because now I play the villain. He’d been a man, but they thought I’d bring a new dynamic to this antagonist. So I made it whatever I wanted to be.”

Erin Moran‘s cancer battle came as a surprise to many — including her former costar Ron Howard.
During an appearance on Monday’s episode of The Talk, Howard admitted he wasn’t aware that Moran, who died Saturday at age 56 after succumbing to stage 4 cancer, was sick.
“It’s been a rough time,” said Howard, 63, who played Moran’s onscreen brother Richie Cunningham on the beloved sitcom Happy Days throughout the 1970s and ’80s. “My stepmother Judy passed away a couple of months ago, so the Erin event really did hit hard. … I had no idea she was ill whatsoever.

In the years leading up to her death on Saturday, Erin Moran claimed to be depressed about her financial struggles, People can exclusively report.
According to a local bartender in the Indiana area where the late Happy Days star resided, Moran used to come in for drinks and speak openly about how she had “lost all her money.”
In 2012, Moran and her husband Steve Fleischmann were living at a Super 8 motel in Corydon, Indiana. According to Amanda Richard, a bartender at O’Charley’s bar and restaurant near the motel, Moran came to the bar “nearly every day and spent most of the afternoon there.

On March 1, Ava DuVernay’s independent film distribution company Array kicked off Women’s History Month the right way: by hosting a 12-hour Twitter take-over that united female filmmakers for a day of awesome, virtual interaction.
More than 30 filmmakers participated in the third “Rebel-a-Thon,” including DuVernay, Amma Asante, Julie Dash, Gina Price-Bythewood, and Mira Nair, with actor Kerry Washington adding her voice in support of the Twitter gathering. Array’s mission is to amplify the voices and visibility of underrepresented filmmakers. Spotlighted during the take-over was the company’s newest acquisition, Egyptian-American director Heidi Saman’s newest film “Namour,” which hits Netflix on March 15.
DuVernay, busy at work on her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, checked in with nothing but positive vibes.

Although it’s not one of the first series that comes to mind when I think of the term video game, the Star Fox franchise is something that I’ve had a lot of great times with over the last couple of decades. Fond memories include the first time my cousins showed me the original game, with its unique and stunning visuals, on their Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as the many hours I spent repeatedly playing through Star Fox 64 after my Mom bought it for me. Both games were infinitely replayable; something which was helped by branching paths and fun, arcade-y gameplay. And, when the N64 classic made its way to 3Ds after quite a few years, it remained just as enjoyable as ever.

If there were such a thing as the happiest place on Earth one imagines it would be Pixar Animation Studios. That it should create something that brings so much joy to millions of people is reason enough but it’s the years spent lovingly creating that joy that make it truly special. The Pixar formula has never been one of instant gratification but crafting movies that aim not only for our hearts but our minds too with movies that stay with the viewer, young or old, long after they have left the cinema. Happy memories to be stored forever in our memory banks. With Inside Out they have truly surpassed themselves. Nostalgically reminiscent of ‘The Numskulls’ cartoon strip, (published originally in The Beezer in the 1960s), Inside Out runs on a similar notion of having tiny people in our heads controlling, not so much everything we do, but our key emotions.

With Monsters: Dark Continent out in UK cinemas this weekend, director Tom Green talks to us about filming in the desert, Misfits and more.
In 2010, British director Gareth Edwards made a huge splash with his feature debut Monsters, a road trip drama with giant monsters stalking around in the background. It was an atmospheric movie that made ingenious use of its low budget; Monsters' success led to Edwards departing for Hollywood, where coveted franchises like Godzilla and Star Wars awaited.
Five years later, and director Tom Green brings us Monsters: Dark Continent, an entirely new story set in the same world as the first movie. A decade after a Nasa probe crashed in Mexico, bringing the giant monsters to Earth, their lumbering threat has spread to the Middle East. João Bénard da Costa—Others will Love the Things I Loved
Directed by Manuel Mozos
Portugal, 2014
João Bénard da Costa (1935-2009) was the director of the Portuguese Film Museum in Lisbon for 18 years, and he is responsible for what it is today. He was also a writer, poet, critic and actor. The biographical documentary about his life and work made by his fellow countryman Manuel Mozos is one of those films that defies film criticism in its conventional form. If film criticism is deficient in general for trying to speak about a medium that entails several tracks—image, dialogue, music and so on—by using a single-track medium, i.e., words, then the conventional form of film criticism can be deficient, as it is in this specific case. The history of da Costa’s life work is what it is, however poetically presented it may be—it is literally a...

It's unlikely that anyone had a better 2014 award season than 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o, but if we had to come up with someone, it would be her younger brother, Peter Jr. We were first introduced to Peter when the actress brought him as her date to the Palm Springs Film Festival back in January of last year. After that, Peter supported his famous family member at multiple award season events and was by her side at the Academy Awards, when she took home the Oscar for best supporting actress. Ahead of this year's big ceremony, Lupita shared a sweet throwback photo on Instagram of herself and Junior, saying, "Fond Memories... #Oscars 2014 with my chivalrous brother." One only needs to look to Peter Jr.'s Instagram page to see that he had just as exciting a year as his sister; he's got to go to some pretty sweet industry events,...

Chelsea Handler is planning on ending her talk show Chelsea Lately, according to The Hollywood Reporter. I’ll admit, I wouldn’t mind if E! were thinking of turning Hello Ross into Chelsea‘s replacement, but Variety says the channel is developing a panel show that will probably replace it.
Sharp-eyed Good Wife viewers already suspected this (I’m told his name appeared with the regular cast instead of the guest-cast), not it’s official. Matthew Goode has been promoted to series regular for the rest of the season.

Syfy’s outbreak drama Helix got a second season renewal.
Vulture looks back at the named credits on TV show, where a cast member appears in the opening credits with their character’s name (like how the Dynasty credits ended with “And Joan Collins as Alexis). The way the credits have shrunk, those credits are mostly a memory by now.

Go by the general law of Indiana Jones movies, and Raiders Of The Lost Ark is regarded as the best, Last Crusade is second, then there's a gap to Temple Of Doom in third, and the other one is fourth. I looked at Temple Of Doom earlier in the week, here, after I watched the movie with my ten-year old son. After that, we popped The Last Crusade on. And it left me wondering: is Last Crusade's stranglehold on second place fair?

A pale, odd-looking white-haired man with a large entourage notices him and marches straight over, complaining that the Cannes film festival, of all places, has refused to screen his film because of its nudity. The man agrees to see the film, Chelsea Girls, and everyone bundles into speedboats and heads for the Carlton Hotel on La Croisette.
That chance meeting between the millionaire playboy Gunter Sachs and artist Andy Warhol had a profound effect on both men. For Sachs, a serious collector, it led to a sea change in his art buying; for Warhol it marked a vital first foothold in Europe.

With more and more of the heretofore unseen contenders (Tintin, J Edgar, Young Adult, War Horse, etcetera) beginning to show their goods to tastemakers and balloting voters of various orgs & circles & associations... where to now? Or when to?
Time is a funny thing with Oscar watching. Though the race progresses chronologically in familiar ways each year through its many stages, it's simultaneously a non-linear experience. We're always hopping around in the timeline from the future (What Will Happen on Oscar Nomination Morning? On Oscar Night?) to the past (Statistics, Past Grudges, Happy Memories, The Perennial Subject of "Overdue" and "Momentum" and Over Analysis of Things That Just Happened). Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The time we're very rarely in is the present. If we're in the present at all (wrist check: it's 2:19 Pm on 11|06|11 as I begin writing this) it's to take immediate stock of...

October is FX's most-watched month ever. Great news on the heels of the precipitous DirecTV / Fox Mexican stand-off that ended no harm no foul:Is it Clay's dirty deeds, done not so dirt cheap on Sons of Anarchy? The freaky Rubber Man who ruined Chad's Halloween on American Horror Story? Rob's massive weight gain on Sunny? Burt Reynolds coming to Archer? Louie's sex scene with Joan Rivers? Wilfred's crazy delightful mom played by Mary Steenburgen? The League's fantasy football mayhem? Fond memories of Testees, Damages and Party Down, three of my favorites? Kurt Sutter's awesome unfiltered Tweets?Must be all of it.The good people on the Fox lot who make up team FX are doing the happy dance jig and...

The Donald, suddenly riding high in the 2012 polls, drew rave reviews at a Tea rally in Boca Raton. Jim DeFede reports on why the birther card is working-and what Trump has learned from Gary Busey.
Hours before Donald Trump arrived for his Tea Party debut Saturday in Boca Raton, 68-year-old Jerry Hochfelsen was handing out hundreds of "Draft Trump" T-shirts. "He's the man for today," said Hochfelsen.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Trump to McCain: 'You're Hired!'
A month ago, Hochfelsen, who has his own printing company, was having lunch, as he does every day, with his best friends - a physician and a fellow who does manufacturing. "We talk about politics, we talk about women. We talk a lot about women actually," he recalled. "But a month ago we started talking about Trump running for president. So we each put up a few bucks and said let's support him.

There's a point partway into Wonder Boys when the main character, Grady Tripp, remembers his wife's response to reading his meandering, 2,000+ page novel: 'It's awfully male.' While this is a valid criticism of Chabon's work, it also endears the reader who would make that criticism to his writing. While I can easily find small things to criticize in Michael Chabon's Wonder Boys, those criticisms grow even smaller because of the immense likeability and humanity of the novel.
Wonder Boys tells the story of Grady Tripp, a middle-aged professor and writer who is going through personal and professional crises. He has been immersed for years in finishing an unwieldy follow-up to a successful novel, but he doesn't want anybody to read it. His wife leaves him, and he finds out that his mistress is pregnant. That's the plot, but it's really about a man who's made a lot of...

Irish or not, comics tweeters sounded off about St. Patrick's Day today. Some love it. Some, like Warren Ellis, want it to leave them alone — and others downright loathe the holiday. And while we're on the subject of green, Geoff Johns got a look at Green Lantern's ring for the movie going into production right now.
Find out what he thought below, along with what Gail Simone wants to write if Marvel and DC ever do an Amalgam Comics line again, who's been working on a WWE comic and who the "Penny Arcade" guys threw a birthday party for.
It's all in the Twitter Report for March 17th, 2010.
@GeoffJohns0 Saw the finalized power ring from the Green Lantern film. Yeah. It rocks. Also saw freaking Salaak. This is Amazing.

In case the giant warning at the top wasn’t enough for you, I am going to spoil Remember Me. Partially because that horse manuer of an ending deserves to be spoiled, but also because it’s near impossible to not talk about the movie without discussing the ending. In this abortion the film calls a conclusion, Robert Pattinson’s Tyler is standing in his father’s (played by a lovely Pierce Brosnan) office waiting for him to come have breakfast with him. This all sounds swell, except for this building happens to be the World Trade Center, and this is also the morning of September 11th,...

After a long playoffs-related break, Fringe returned with its spookiest episode yet.
A shadow from Broyles' past came back to lurk the halls of a Boston hospital, taking its victims in their beds and even following them home. These victims were then turned to dust.
Is the killer a man at all, or something more alien than anything the Fringe team has dealt with? As the team races to stop this latest oddity, Broyles may have stepped on a few too many toes in Washington, putting himself at risk. Read the recap of "Earthling" and then the review below...
What We Liked: How It Looked
The shadow man was one of the coolest villains we've seen thus far on Fringe. Whether sneaking through an apartment, a darkened hospital hall or gliding through security footage, this thing was just plain creepy to look at. The little girl's line at the...
