(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

Way back in March of 1927, famed writer Hp Lovecraft wrote the science-fiction/horror short story The Colour Out of Space. In the story, a meteorite crashes in the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. Fifty years later, the people who lived there suffered greatly. Their crops grow bountiful but rotten on the inside, their animals become mutated, and eventually, they themselves are driven to insanity and death. Not only was this Lovecraft’s favorite personal short story but would become one of his most well-regarded works. Sixty years later, in 1987, a film based on Lovecraft’s short story went into production under the title The Farm. What would follow was the financial failure of a movie with stories behind the scenes more grotesque than its monsters. Yet, it still somehow spawned three even more unheard-of and totally unconnected sequels. This is the story of What the F*ck Happened to The Curse?...

What are the defining traits of a character actor? Why is a shapeshifting virtuoso like Daniel Day-Lewis considered a full-blown movie star, while a chameleon-like genius like Giancarlo Esposito is routinely relegated to supporting player status? As previously discussed here at /Film, there are multiple factors at play: box office, deeply ingrained cultural notions of physical attractiveness, distinctive utility, and the Borgnine Paradox.
It should come as no surprise that my solo endeavor to arrive at a solid-ish definition of "character actor" is not the first in the history of the written word. There have been many, many attempts by whole groups of esteemed journalists to get at some kind of reasonable understanding of this term/concept, and, having read more than a few of them, I can assure you that there is no hard-fast rule. You could call just about everyone outside of Britney Spears a character actor --...

A movie doesn’t have to be good for it to be Good. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be good for it to be meaningful.
For many, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is more than a so-bad-it’s-good rewatch; it’s a film to rally around for its gay subtext (and just plain text). Though it was widely panned at its 1985 release, Freddy’s Revenge has since found a vocal audience in the queer community that celebrates much of what it was initially criticized for.
This week on Bloody FM’s Guide to the Unknown, Kristen and Will discuss the movie alongside the super illuminating documentary Scream, Queen: My Nightmare on Elm Street. The documentary focuses on lead actor Mark Patton’s experience shooting the film as a closeted gay man at the time, going through the inner turmoil of being tasked with playing a...

Netflix recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street by bringing the horror classic to the streaming service as part of their 1984 Anniversary Collection, but the bad news here is that the movie is already leaving Netflix next month.

A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.
In 2000, Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernández launched the Spanish production company Fantastic Factory. The Filmax banner’s objective was to create modestly budgeted genre films for international distribution.

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge character Jesse has been recreated as a Bull Airs shoe
A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. Images of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Bull Airs website.

The Original Screen-Worn Freddy Glove from the Original ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Is Up for Auction!
The original Freddy Krueger glove armour – seen in Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – has been located and put up for auction by Propstore this week.
This prop has been screen-matched, meaning Propstore was able to verify that it’s the very same metal glove armour and razor blade fingers worn by Robert Englund in the original Nightmare on Elm Street! What do they mean by “glove armour,” you might be wondering?
Propstore notes, “Replica rings have been lightly tacked into the finger interiors to allow the metalwork to be displayed on a replica leather work glove, as the original leather glove is no longer present.”
Propstore describes the one-of-a-kind prop as follows: “Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) screen-matched hero metal glove armour and razor blade fingers, with an original hand-drawn design schematic, from Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jack Sholder...

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

While we keep waiting to hear distribution news for the Blind (watch it Here, read my review at This Link) sequel Pretty Boy, the film’s creative team is continuing to create. Last year, we heard that filming had wrapped on a giallo thriller called That’s a Wrap, the first film from Neon Noir, a production company formed by Blind and Pretty Boy director Marcel Walz, screenwriter Joe Knetter, and star Sarah French. Now production has also wrapped on the second Neon Noir project, a horror film called Garden of Eden!
Directed by Walz from a script by Knetter, Garden of Eden has the following synopsis: The Eden family are devout Christians and do everything they can to live the word of God and set an example of what is right and wrong. They have been very successful in business and are rich beyond their needs. In order to give back,...

Even if you only have a passing interest in horror films, chances are you've been terrified by Robert Englund. The man who brought Freddy Krueger to life in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise is a living legend, and fans are soon going to be able to peek behind the striped sweater and razor gloves in the new documentary, "Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story." Directed by Gary Smart and Chris Griffiths, who recently won the morbid statue for Best Documentary for "Pennywise: The Story of It" at Fangoria's Chainsaw Awards, the documentary follows the life and career of one of horror's most recognizable and prolific performers.
Ahead of the film's release on the Screambox streaming platform and VOD, I was honored to speak with Englund about the staying power of Freddy Krueger and how one becomes a horror icon. I wore a yellow button-up with black crosses on it,...

Jacques Haitkin, who served as the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies, has died. He was 72.
Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved his job so much,” he noted.
Haitkin also manned a camera and/or did second-unit work on three Fast & Furious films, two Captain America movies and other action features including Cherry 2000 (1987), Last Man Standing (1995), The Expendables (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Black Panther (2018), Venom (2018) and 21 Bridges (2019).

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

Among horror fans, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is generally regarded as one of the best entries of the fantasy slasher franchise, which is now nine films deep. It's the entry that cemented Freddy Krueger as the wisecracking child killer he's known as now, an evolution that took creator Wes Craven's original concept and expanded it to give his monster more commercial appeal.
The third installment comes along on the success of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge," a sequel that, like its predecessor, follows a teenager battling the evil spirit of a scarred, blade-gloved child killer. Freddy operates in the dream world, and his signature striped sweater and filthy brown fedora are often the last things his victims see before their dream death and corresponding real-world death. New Line Cinema struck gold with the "Nightmare" movies; their baddie, unlike the hulking Jason Voorhees or strong,...

If it's one thing all horror fans understand, it's that every month is a good month for watching scary movies. Sure, we often like to ramp up the on-screen scares come October, but the frights still continue throughout the rest of the year. And while the holiday season brings with it a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, there's also quite a lot that still goes bump in the night.
In honor of the various terrors that occur every December — i.e. every single trip you will take to a shopping mall in the coming weeks — here is a list of the best horror movies available to stream this month. Consider it your holiday gift guide for movies you can watch after the family has gone home and you are left to piece your sanity back together. The holidays may only come around once a year, but terror lasts forever.

Warning: The below article contains spoilers for "Halloween Ends."
"Halloween Ends" is finally here. Fans are already taking to their keyboards to debate their conflicting takes on what feels like the most divisive film entry in the franchise since "Halloween III: Season of the Witch." The film takes some big swings and plays with genre expectations, sidelining Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) to focus on his apprentice-copycat killer, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell). There are themes of evil infecting Corey and the town, and intriguing supernatural elements teased but left purposefully vague. Will this final chapter earn cult classic status over time or remain a source of fan outrage? Only time will tell. Whether you loved this movie or were disappointed and looking for something to hit the reset button, we've got ten killer slashers you should check out next.

Christopher Young‘s brilliant Hellraiser score is nearly as synonymous with the film as Pinhead — but if writer-director Clive Barker had his way, the soundtrack would have been composed by British industrial music pioneers Coil.
Barker first became aware of Coil through Forbidden Planet, the UK’s enduring genre bookshop where band member Stephen Thrower worked. When Barker happened into the store, Thrower mentioned that he was a fan of his Books of Blood, and the two hit it off. Thrower eventually played him some of Coil’s music, and Barker was immediately won over.
Barker was quoted as saying that Coil is “the only group I’ve heard on disc whose records I’ve taken off because they made my bowels churn.” That’s high praise coming from the master of the macabre. Shortly after completing the script for Hellraiser, he told Coil that he wanted them to compose the music.

Sleep can literally kill you. That's what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" so downright spooky. Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.
In the coming years, Freddy Krueger has haunted our dreams across six sequels, a vs. movie with Jason Voorhees, and a 2010 remake, starring Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy himself.

Horror movie sets can be the happiest places on earth, where air-powered cannons paint fake blood murals and human torsos can bite. At other times, a setback in the VFX department can cause delays and tension on the set. That's how a prosthetic tongue threatened to derail a scene in Jack Sholder's 1985 slasher sequel, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge."
"Freddy's Revenge" picks up half a decade after the events of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," with new occupants in Nancy Thompson's old home. Filmmaker Carter Smith started his career doing fashion photography before successfully making the switch to directing horror films. Smith is known for the body horror driven film The Ruins (2008) as well as Jamie Marks is Dead (2014). Written and directed by Carter, his new film Swallowed premiered at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival and brilliantly showcases cringe-inducing body horror by utilizing creepy crawly effects, a standout cast, and an intriguing story. By far, the highlight of Swallowed is an emotional and magnetic performance from Cooper Koch.
Koch stars as Benjamin, a gay, aspiring porn actor who is about to move to Los Angeles. He is spending his last night at home out drinking and dancing with his best friend Dom, played by Jose Colon. After Dom tells Benjamin he needs to make a quick stop on the way home, the friends go to Dom’s cousin’s house where they meet Alice,...
