In 1960, paleontologist Louis Leakey did something remarkable: He hired a 26-year-old secretary, untrained in the sciences and without a university degree in any field at all, to go into the wilds of Tanzania and study chimps. Jane Goodall is now, at age 83, one of the most renowned figures in primatology, and arguably one of the most famous scientists living today (maybe to ever have lived), one of those rare superstars of science whose work has captured the imagination of the general public. But at the time, she knew nothing about wild chimps.

Max Weinberg has spent 43 years touring the world with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. And in between his job with the Boss, the 66-year-old drummer managed to hold down a 17-year post as a bandleader for Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show. Turns out, he doesn’t do well with downtime.

’Tis the season! Fantasia Barrino is giving fans a dose of classic holiday tunes with her new release, Christmas After Midnight.

Et caught up with Barrino during a promo shoot in Los Angeles last week, where she dished about the album being inspired by her late grandmother, whose birthday was on Christmas.

“Christmas was everything for her,” the American Idol alum revealed while reminiscing about her favorite Christmas memories of “good music” and “nothing but love.”

“I want to keep that going. I feel like times have changed, families have changed,” Barrino explained. “People are not as close anymore as they used to be, and one thing about our house was music always kept us close.”

They collaborated creatively through multiple decades, creating cinematic magic on the screen that still resonates with horror fans today. As far as one-two punches go when it comes to directors and composers, Lucio Fulci and Fabio Frizzi pack a huge wallop, and in the years since Fulci's passing in 1996, Frizzi has kept the spirit of Fulci's movies alive through his music, including recent live performances of his scores, two of which will take place on October 29th and the 30th at the New York City's Music Hall of Williamsburg. Ahead of the anticipated shows, I had the honor of catching up with Frizzi for our latest Q&A to talk about the joys of performing live, collaborating with Fulci, The Beyond Composer's Cut, and more.

John Carpenter is releasing a new album containing music from his iconic films. Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 will be released on October 20. The Halloween filmmaker is also hitting the road on a U.S. tour, that kicks off October 29 in Las Vegas.

Anthology features newly recorded versions of 13 of Carpenter's movie themes, including The Thing, Escape from New York, Halloween, They Live, and the Sam Neill-starring In the Mouth of Madness. The album is now available to pre-order.

Anthology is the third album release from Carpenter, following 2015’s Lost Themes and 106’s Lost Themes II.

Some acts are neglected only because the sheer crush of music that overwhelms us every single day makes it virtually impossible to hear/see/experience transcendent music. That some acts languish in obscurity remains a cruel twist of fate. Or that they're never praised by hipsters on every culture blog in our ever-expanding universe is sometimes just luck of the draw. Or rather, the lack of drawing such a lucky card. This will not happen to the extraordinarily talented Darlingside, a band that I caught live a few short years ago at Rockwood Music Hall in New York. Not sure if I would have "discovered" them had I not been there that night to see some other act. Happy accident or destiny? Regardless, this four-person indie folk band hails from Cambridge, Ma. The band consists of Don Mitchell, Auyon Mukharji, Harris Paseltiner, and David Senft. They make and perform beautiful noise.

On April 29 the Tribeca Film Festival hosted an historic reunion between director Francis Ford Coppola and cast members from "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II". Significantly, the event was held at the nation's crown jewel of theaters, Radio City Music Hall.  Joining Coppola were James Caan, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire, James Caan, Al Pacino and Diane Keaton. The sold out venue first saw back-to-back screenings of the first two "Godfather" films, which were rapturously received by fans who applauded loudly at the introduction of certain beloved characters as well as classic lines of dialogue. (The audience predictably went wild when the scene arrived of Michael and Kay attending the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall.) Since neither film had ever been shown in the Music Hall, it was especially pleasing for retro movie lovers to experience them in Gotham's famed venue.

Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?

After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.

Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). – Exclusive: The 12th Annual Sunscreen Film Festival announced its official selections for the 2017 event featuring films with Alec Baldwin, Dylan McDermott, John Cleese, Daphne Zuniga and more. Opening night will feature Michael Mailer’s newest film, “Blind,” a romantic-drama, starring Alec Baldwin, Demi Moore and Dylan McDermott. Closing night will wrap up the festival with “Albion: The Enchanted Stallion,” a family fantasy adventure, starring John Cleese, Debra Messing, Jennifer Morrison and Stephen Dorff.

Retrospective Screenings will include Daphne Zuniga appearance at the festival honoring the 30th anniversary of “Spaceballs.” Also in this category will be “The Greatest Show on Earth,” from 1952 directed by Cecile B. DeMille, which won the Oscar for Best Pictures and Best Writing in 1953. The screening will honor the closing of the Ringling Bros.

That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening. The story of transgender internet star Gigi Gorgeous, “This Is Everything” chronicles the transformation of Gigi Lazzarato, a courageous young woman who began posting beauty and fashion videos on YouTube as a Toronto high school student when she was still known as Gregory Lazzarato. The film opens Friday for one-week runs at the IFC Center in New York and at Laemmle Music Hall in Los Angeles before premiering on YouTube Red on February 8.

Lazzarato’s rise to internet stardom came after years of encouraging her YouTube viewers to express themselves in the face of bullies and online harassment.

Havenhurst is an upcoming haunted house thriller. From director Andrew C. Erin, the film stars: Julie Benz ("Dexter") and Danielle Harris (Hatchet, 2006). In the film, a troubled former addict is given a second chance. Housed in the Havenhurst tenement, Jackie (Benz) is drawn into the mysteries of the apartment and into the disappearance of a young woman. Sam Kretchmar’s debut film “Keep in Touch” asks the question: How far would you go to restart your life, and who would you want to restart it with? The film stars Ryan Patrick Bachand as Colin, a man going through a life crisis who attempt to track down his long-lost childhood love, only to discover that she was killed in a car accident many years ago. He eventually learns about her younger sister Jessie (singer-songwriter Gabbi McPhee), an aspiring musician who bears a striking resemblance to the girl he used to love, and before he has a chance to disclose his true identity, they begin a relationship. Costume designer Sharen K. Davis and documentarian Roger Ross Williams are among the new influx of governors as Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs hailed “another step towards inclusion” on Monday.

Steven Spielberg and Laura Dern are among others voted to the board for the first time, alongside Laura Karpman and Kevin Collier.

Re-elected incumbent governors are: David Rubin, John Bailey, Jan Pascale, Mark Johnson, Nancy Utley, Jon Bloom, and Robin Swicord.

Returning to the board after a hiatus are: William M. Mechanic, Leonard Engelman, and Craig Barron. A run-off election is required for the film editors branch.

The board includes the three governors-at-large appointed in January by Isaacs: Reginald Hudlin, Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Gregory Nava.

The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.

The best things come in pairs, and Crystal Castles appear to recognize this. Earlier in the year the duo announced that they would make a comeback with Edith Frances replacing Alice Glass as vocalist, and now they’ve revealed the music video for the first single from their upcoming album alongside the dates of a three-month world tour.

The official music video for “Concrete” pairs the song’s primal vocals and foreboding synth melodies with subversive images of Frances mouthing the words while stumbling backwards through a crowded venue. The sound is not a significant departure from what Crystal Castles has put out in recent years, but it’s certainly different from the blog house tracks that put them on the map in the late aughts.

The last tour dates announced by the duo will wrap up with a performance at Reading & Leeds Festival in England on August 27th, and...
