Before the Resident Evil franchise ended up in the hands of Paul W.S. Anderson, the filmmaker who was developing a cinematic adaptation of the zombie video game series was the one who first brought us the concept of flesh-eating zombies: Night of the Living Dead (and Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead) director George A. Romero. For decades, fans have been pondering what it would have been like if Romero had been able to bring his vision of Resident Evil to the screen – and that’s the subject of the upcoming documentary George A. Romero’s Resident Evil. We’ve been waiting for this one for a while, and now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that it’s set to receive a Digital and On Demand release on January 7th!

Well folks, current event news is ... not great. I won't go into further detail on that, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. On top of that, the cold, dead winter is closing in, which means the sun sets around 4:30 P.M. and smothers us in darkness. Things are feeling absolutely apocalyptic right now, which brings us to the subject of this month's horror streaming column: end of the world horror movies! Yes, let's just jump head-first into the bleak uncertainty of the future by watching scary movies about end times. To compile this month's list, I stuck to some loose rules. For one thing, I tried to limit the inclusion of zombie movies — apocalyptic zombie movies are a genre unto themselves, and I'm sure I could fill up an entire list of them, but that's not what I wanted to do here. Also, since this is a horror movie list,...

What if I told you that the late directing legend George Romero wrote and directed an ahead-of-its-time “one bad day” revenge slasher classic back in 2000 that mixed Michael Douglas in Falling Down with Michael Myers from Halloween and featured a live performance by The Misfits… yet no one noticed? It would take Robert Stack and a special episode of Unsolved Mysteries to uncover how a film that was arguably one of George Romero’s best films in the second half of his career went completely unnoticed, and stayed that way even as we speak today… This is just what happened to Bruiser.
Look for yourself and you’ll find a very thin file on the existence of Bruiser (watch it Here). To craft even the video you’re watching right now we had to reach into the time vault of eBay and find a DVD copy featuring a commentary from...

After featuring a number of key art that left the standard credit block out the design, it is nice to see this poster from Mexico's festival darling coming-of-age plague-zombie film, Párvulos, has a more traditional sense, where they are tucked discreetly into the bottom right corner. That and the evocative reminder of a reaching Bub from Day of the Dead. The attractive part of this design however is its commitment to verticality. It is not simply the block-red title card and director's credit moving upwards along the left side, but the reaching hands. The pull quotes and festival laurels, stacked downward on the right add even...

Before he passed away in 2017, horror master George A. Romero had been developing one final zombie movie titled Twilight of the Dead. The film is coming to life with Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist, Blood), and Deadline reports that the zombie film has found its leads in Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich and Upgrade‘s Betty Gabriel.
The George A. Romero estate is teaming up with LA-based financier-producer Roundtable on Twilight of the Dead, being positioned as the “final installment” in Romero’s ‘Dead’ franchise. The original treatment for the planned project was penned by Romero himself, but Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati tackled the actual screenplay.

Exclusive: Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) and Betty Gabriel (Get Out) have been set to star in Twilight of the Dead, the next feature from The Call and The Machinist director Brad Anderson.
The George A. Romero estate is teaming up with L.A.-based financier-producer Roundtable on the “seventh and final installment” of the seminal Living Dead franchise. Horror icon Romero had written a treatment for the movie before he died in 2017 and he regarded Twilight of the Dead as the conclusion to his epic saga, which comprised six movies and various spinoffs and remakes.
Fortitude International will present the project at next week’s American Film Market, with production being lined up for March.
Set on a tropical island, we’re told Twilight of the Dead will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on Earth who are caught between factions of the undead.

This time we wanted to bring together films that take a look at what haunts us after; the lingering remains of a life that don’t just fade away, the ones that go bump in the night. With Halloween and the Day of the Dead coming up, this month’s Fiscal Sponsorship highlights feature demons, vampires and shapeshifters, you know, the lighter side of death. Get ready for a good scare.

Land of the Dead was released in a special edition 4K by Scream Factory on October 15th.
Zombies aren’t traditionally depicted as intelligent. They’re monsters motivated by the relentless drive to feast on human flesh and brains. George A. Romero, the iconic horror filmmaker behind classics such as Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, first introduced the idea of intelligent zombies in Day of the Dead. He takes that idea and ramps it up for his forth installment in the living dead series.

Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this year we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, Frankie Freako, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) playing the title character… and now that the project is in post-production, the filmmakers recently revealed that the theme song composed for the remake is a collaboration between legendary musician Slash, composer Bear McCreary, and Deathstalker II composer Chuck Cirino!

Greg Nicotero has been involved in The Walking Dead franchise from day one. Daryl Dixon season 1 introduced us to a couple of new walkers. For many years, the two-word phrase “superhero,” as well as other variants like “superhero” and “super-hero,” were under the joint ownership of both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. While both were influential in the genre since the 1930s, they were far from the only companies producing content in that genre. But since both were the biggest names associated with the genre both filed a joint trademark in 1977 and have held it since.
But now, after nearly 50 years, the “Super Hero” trademark has been dismissed following a challenge by Scott Richold of Superbabies Ltd.
The argument was made that the superhero phrase was a generic term and thus was not qualified for legal protection and ownership.
A challenge was issued this past May with The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. While Superbabies Ltd. asked the court for a default judgment, both DC and...

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

In 1982, horror legends Stephen King and George A. Romero joined forces to bring audiences the ultimate experience in being scared. The result was "Creepshow," a gross, funny, spooky horror anthology film inspired by the old EC horror comics that Stephen King grew up reading. With a cast of familiar faces, "Creepshow" told several stories about ghosts, ghouls, monsters, and bugs. It was an all-around fun time at the movies. It was also made fairly cheaply (the budget was $8 million), which helped it turn a profit. When something like that happens, a sequel can't be far behind. Sure enough, by 1987, "Creepshow 2" had arrived.
But this sequel was a little different from the original film. For one thing, it wasn't as good. For another, while Romero and King were involved with the sequel, their contributions were different from the first film. Romero directed the original "Creepshow," but this sequel was helmed by Michael Gornick,...

Final Destination 6 is aiming for a 2025 theatrical release (IMAX screens included) – and next year we might also get a new movie from original Final Destination screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick, as Deadline reports that Reddick is teaming up with Convoke Media, Vast Entertainment, DreamPunk Entertainment, and Emmy-winning director Lane Shefter Bishop (The Venice Murders) to get a film called Bloody Mary: Origins into production.
Based on the novel Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan, Bloody Mary: Origins was scripted by Reddick and John Stancari – who, sadly, passed away in 2018 after a long battle with cancer. This is Stancari’s first produced film and will be dedicated to his memory. The story follows a group of teenage girls who discover an ancient spell that conjures the real Bloody Mary. When the terrifying entity pulls one of the girls through the mirror, she becomes trapped in the past, living out the real Mary Worth’s last days.

Art the Clown is coming to ruin your Disney memories... well, sort of.
According to a new exclusive from Variety, Terrifier star David Howard Thornton, who plays the larger-than-life yet absolutely terrifying killer clown, will next star in Screamboat, a horror comedy in which Disney's earliest iteration of Mickey Mouse becomes the stuff of nightmares.
On January 1, 2024, the classic 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie entered the public domain. Not long after that, multiple projects were announced featuring the 1928 version of Mickey becoming the latest childhood character to morph into a horror villain.

Steven Lamorte, who produced Terrifier 2, will direct the film. Lamorte previously dabbled in this kind of parody material with The Mean One, which also starred Thornton. The Mean One is a Christmas horror film loosely based on the iconic Dr. Seuss story,...

Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick that we now know is titled Screamboat. David Howard Thornton plays Art the Clown in the Terrifier films and brought the horror version of the Grinch to life in The Mean One, so it’s no surprise that...
