As the situation comedy disappears from broadcast television, we might be losing more than simply 23 minutes of laughs surrounded by Progressive commercials. Over the past 50 years, the sitcom has been a surefire cannon from which to launch unknown comic actors onto the A-list.
Here are 7 sitcoms that turned anonymous comedians into the biggest stars in the world…
1 Mork & Mindy
Robin Williams was a 1970s club comic with a growing reputation as an improvisational genius. A guest turn on Happy Days — producer Garry Marshall’s kid was into Star Wars so Marshall ordered writers to invent a funny alien — launched a spin-off series that turned Williams into a star practically overnight. Also up for the Happy Days alien cameo? A young Richard Lewis.
2 Bosom Buddies
Want a idiotic premise for a sitcom? How about two guys who decide to pose as women so they can get a permanent room in an affordable women-only hotel.

Legend has it that every turning point in American history was marked by the presence and influence of an elusive and mythical Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks’s 1994 film, directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis, was powerful enough to move souls and shape ideas even decades after its critically acclaimed release.

Although Forrest Gump developed into an instant classic and a global phenomenon upon release, the film was shrouded in troubled production and studio politics at the time of its making. From problems related to the rights to the IP to slashing of the film’s budget, the uphill battle that Hanks and Zemeckis weathered to get Forrest Gump on the road is a tale in and of itself.

The 1984 summer movie season kicked off in May and early June with a flurry of blockbusters. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" opened to a gargantuan $25 million over Memorial Day weekend, and, unconcerned about getting chopped up in the mega-sequel's wake, Paramount scored a $17 million debut the following weekend with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." If you're thinking the studios might sit out a weekend while these films dominate the box office, Columbia and Warner Bros opted to throw a couple of haymakers over the June 8 three-day with, respectively, "Ghostbusters" and "Gremlins."
And then, on the fourth weekend of the summer movie season, Hollywood at last took a breather. With kids fresh out of school, the studios sat back and watched the aforementioned titles continue to flourish, while other pricey gambles (e.g. "Streets of Fire" and "Once Upon a Time in America") flopped.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. While it’s not necessarily true crime per se, The Ashley Madison Affair about the notorious dating platform premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 11, which is based on a compelling podcast of the same name. The Jewel Thief arrives on July 13 to provide an account of Gerald Blanchard, one of history’s most creative criminals.
But where does the cartoon excitement comes in? Well, that’s because season 11 of Matt Groening’s beloved Futurama premieres on July 24. Fry, Leela, the Professor, and Bender will all return for a direct continuation of...

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.
Check out the Season 5 trailer of “What We Do In the Shadows”:
Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Stirring parents up into a paranoid mob is an American tradition, and it's one of our lousiest. The poorly-researched anti-comic book tome "Seduction of the Innocent" led to a public comic book burning in the 1950s and decades of oppressive self-censorship within the publishing world. Violent video games like "Mortal Kombat" were accused of corrupting our children in the 1990s, leading to congressional hearings and a video game rating system.
That these waves of mob mentality are almost universally viewed, years later, as embarrassing ignorance and/or obvious manipulations doesn't seem to stop the cycle from starting up, over and over again. Apparently, nobody ever learns anything. Even when we finally admit that there was nothing terribly sinister about the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons — which was also accused of corrupting kids for many years — and transform it into a family-friendly fantasy movie (for the second time), we find ourselves...

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Tom Hanks is known as one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors with a number of successful movies to his name. But much earlier in his career, Hanks confided that his newfound fame had an unwanted influence on his ego.

Hanks’ fascination with acting started when the actor was in high school. During his adolescent years, he stumbled onto his passion thanks to a class he took in high school. It was a passion that would follow Hanks all the way to his college years.
“I took a drama class that determined my career. In the course of ten weeks, I saw five completely different types of theater,” Hanks once said in an interview with Playboy. “I felt that the theater was as magical a place as existed, and I wanted to be involved in it. So I majored in theater arts.

Tom Hanks got his first big breakthrough on the big screen with Ron Howard’s mermaid-out-of-water comedy Splash. But it wasn’t his run on the sitcom Bosom Buddies that landed him a spot alongside Daryl Hannah. It was actually whooping Fonz’s butt!
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (per Entertainment Weekly), Tom Hanks reflected on his one-off appearance in the season 10 episode “A Little Case of Revenge”, which aired in November 1982. “I kicked Fonzie…I got dressed up in a judo karate outfit. And I think I’m legendarily the first guy to actually strike Fonzie. I kicked him through the stained glass window of Al’s Drive-in,” he said, referring to the popular hangout for the Happy Days gang.
And that, apparently, was enough to impress Ron Howard, who was set to direct Splash, based on what would become an Oscar-nominated screenplay.

In “A Man Called Otto,” Tom Hanks plays one of those misanthropic over-the-hill loners who never misses a chance to vent his spleen. Giving a hard time to everyone is what gets him through the day; you might call it his hobby. From Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol” to Alan Arkin in “Little Miss Sunshine,” we’ve seen this sort of get-off-my-lawn curmudgeon many times before. But with the right actor and the right script, it’s a formula for yocks (and for gently rediscovered humanity) that audiences never get tired of — and Hanks, make no mistake, is the right actor for this role. For years, when he was America’s top movie star, Hanks was routinely described as our own James Stewart, the soul of guy-next-door decency, but going back to his earliest performances in films like “Bachelor Party” Hanks has always had an edge to him. That’s...

Before Tom Hanks became "America's Dad," he was a young heart throb of the 1980s. Starring in hit films like "Big," "Splash," and "Bachelor Party," Hanks met his match for most lovable lead character in the 1989 comedy "Turner & Hooch."

If you were any kind of celebrity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, chances are you booked a one-episode trip on "The Love Boat" at some point. It's also possible you boarded "de plane" to "Fantasy Island." These two ABC shows were the backbone of ABC's losers-and-old-farts-stuck-at-home-on-a-Saturday-night line-up, and scored impressive ratings throughout the majority of their runs based primarily on their constantly revolving carousel of guest stars. Week to week, you never knew which washed-up actor, up-and-coming ingenue, or reasonably telegenic pro athlete was going to show up.
Basically, if you weren't getting badgered by these series' casting directors for a guest appearance, you needed to either fire your agent or quit the business altogether. That said, if you relented and made an appearance on either program, you might've required a career intervention. "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" had everything to gain from landing biggish names, while...

Update: Actress Tawny Kitaen died on May 7 from dilated cardiomyopathy. The manner of death was ruled natural today by the Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. in California.
The spokesman said other significant conditions with Kitaen included: mild coronary atherosclerosis; mirtazapine, mirtazapine metabolite, alprazolam, acetaminophen, pregabalin, and hydrocodone.
Earlier: Tawny Kitaen, an actress whose stunning presence in two Whitesnake videos helped propel that band’s multiplatinum albums to No. 1 in the late ’80s, died Friday in Newport Beach at age 59. No cause of death has been determined, according to numerous reports.
Whitesnake’s hits “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love?” from the album Whitesnake helped make that band the toast of the late 1980s, thanks in no small part to Kitaen’s allure. “Here I Go Again” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. Watch the clip below.

People a bit younger remembered her as Jerry’s girlfriend in the 1991 Seinfeld episode “The Nose Job,” or her tumultuous real-life marriage to Major League Baseball pitcher Chuck Finley. After Matt James' conversation with his dad was aired on The Bachelor, Rachel Lindsay is asking one big question: "Who green-lit this?" On the March 8 episode of the ABC series, Matt sat down with his father, Manny James, and discussed their estranged relationship. In a new episode of the Bachelor Party podcast, Rachel spoke out against the televised moment, telling listeners she is "so disturbed" by how the conversation was shown. "I felt it in my soul and I had to speak out about it because I am so disturbed at what I just watched take place on the Bachelor stage—the conversation between Matt and his father," she told host Juliet Litman....

Matt James, this season’s star of “The Bachelor,” took to Twitter during tonight’s episode to address the conversation he had with his father on-screen before heading into fantasy suite dates.
The deeply personal conversation is garnering a considerable amount of attention on social media with many calling the scene exploitative.
The negative social media attention is the latest chatter to cast a cloud over this season of “The Bachelor,” which has been airing — per usual — as a racist controversy centered around its longtime host, Chris Harrison, and frontrunner contestant, Rachael Kirkconnell, continues to explode in real-time off-screen.
As Monday night’s episode was airing, James — the first-ever Black Bachelor in the franchise’s history — cautioned viewers on social media about the “dangerous stereotypes and “negative depictions” of Black fathers in media.
“Tonight’s convo with my dad was hard to experience, and it’s just as hard to watch all this time later,...

Rachel Lindsay is weighing on Bachelor Nation's biggest question: Who should replace Chris Harrison? Earlier this month, the 49-year-old host announced he was temporarily "stepping aside" from The Bachelor franchise after receiving backlash for the comments he made about the controversy surrounding contestant Rachael Kirkconnell. Following his statement on Feb. 13, a source told E! News that Chris "will appear at the Women Tell All episode on March 1, which was pre-taped." However, the source revealed, "the After the Final Rose special has not yet filmed," which is why many are curious to know who will take his spot. As Rachel discussed on the Bachelor Party podcast, she...

The Alienist Season 2 Episode 3
Rarely does a crime show build to a satisfying reveal if the series settles in on its first suspect, then reveals that suspect to be the killer. That’s why despite the circumstantial evidence pointing at the matron, Dr. Markoe’s right hand woman at the Lying In Hospital, it seems almost too obvious that she’s the culprit. However, the episode certainly wants you to think that the barren, slightly crazy-eyed matron has kidnapped the Linares baby, with a lot of “Labyrinth” dedicated to investigation and plot. However, the final stinger, that whoever harmed the baby fed it breast milk, seems to suggest the show is already moving away from the matron.
That said, the episode only truly came alive after Dr. Kreizler indulged in a little too much fruity brandy and champagne. John Moore’s Bachelor Party was...

Rachel Lindsay is happy that Matt James will be the first black Bachelor, but she’s still waiting for the franchise to prove its commitment to diversity.
The first black Bachelorette congratulated James on Twitter following his casting on Friday, saying it’s a “step in the right direction.” But she added, “I would be remiss to not point out that based on the current climate, it feels like a knee-jerk reaction and a result of societal pressure. This announcement, without any further commitments regarding diversity, sweepingly brushes deeper issues under the rug.”
Lindsay had long called on the franchise to fix its diversity problem, but those cries have intensified in the last few weeks in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd‘s death. Last week, fans started a petition demanding, among other changes, a black lead. Both the petition and Lindsay have laid out...

As ABC’s retrospective series “The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons — Ever!” kicks off Monday with Sean Lowe‘s installment, his now-wife Catherine Giudici is reflecting on her time on Season 17 in 2013, revealing that she thought she was only cast to fill a Poc quota.
“When I was originally cast, I was very flattered but somewhat grounded by the fact that I would be one of the faces that represented people of color. I knew that one of the reasons I was probably chosen was because I was Filipino,” Giudici wrote on Instagram on Sunday.
The graphic designer admitted she “counted myself out to be his fiancée because of what I assumed Sean liked” and because she believed she was “there just to check a box.” However, she added, “I ended up with so much more.”

A group of young, scrappy and brilliant writers penned some of the most accomplished dramas presented live during the Golden Age of TV in the 1950s. Writers such as Paddy Chayefsky, J.P. Miller (“The Days of Wine and Roses”), Reginald Rose (“Twelve Angry Men”), Tad Mosel (“The Haven”), James Costigan (“Little Moon of Alban”) and Horton Foote.
But the most influential and best-known of these writers was Rod Serling, who became a superstar as not only creator and writer but host of the landmark 1959-1964 CBS sci-fi/fantasy anthology series “The Twilight Zone,” for which he won two Emmys for his writing. “The Twilight Zone” and even his less successful 1970-73 NBC anthology series “Night Gallery” has overshadowed his earlier work for which he won three Emmys for his writing.

ABC has postponed its next “Bachelor” spinoff, “The Bachelor Summer Games,” in light of the recently announced Olympics delay, TheWrap has confirmed.
The series was planned to air opposite the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer, much in the same way 2018’s “The Bachelor Winter Games” aired as counterprogramming to NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. ABC and Warner Bros.’s decision to postpone “The Bachelor Summer Games” comes after the International Olympic Committee confirmed on Monday that the this year’s Summer Olympics would be delayed until 2021.
“The Bachelor Summer Games” was never formally announced, but ABC alternative boss Rob Mills confirmed the series was in development on an episode of the “Bachelor Party” podcast earlier this year.

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in March 2020.
March sees the beginning of one of TV's more interesting experiment in 2020. Hulu's new releases for March 2020 are highlighted by the launch of the torturously-named "FX on Hulu" in which certain FX shows will premiere exclusively on Hulu.
Yes, when Disney set out up the entertainment industry, it gained more brands than it knew what to do with. And that's how you get stuff like FX on Hulu. The streaming/cable hybrid begins in earnest in March with two series, Alex Garland's sci-fi Devs and the weird Lil Dickey comedy Dave. More FX on Hulu is set to arrive in April as well.
Hulu's only $5.99/month now, grab the deal here!
In addition to FX's offerings, Hulu has some intriguing originals of its own for March 2020. Hillary Clinton docuseries, Hillary, premieres on...

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? Writer/director Just Jaeckin (Lady Chatterley’s Lover) has concocted an almost unwieldy mix of Raiders of the Lost Ark,...

When Tom Hanks jogged onto screen in his feature film debut in the 1980 slasher pic “He Knows You’re Alone,” one probably couldn’t have predicted he would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved actors of all time. Playing a psychology student who postulates about the appeal of fear, Hanks makes manages to the most of his few minutes of screen time. And even though it’s brief, you can catch some of the hallmarks of what would later become a Tom Hanks performance — charismatic but a little goofy, handsome but non-threatening, and able to make any line sound like it has a handful of meanings.

If you've been thinking, "Pilot Pete is pretty perfect...except he still lives with his parents," get ready to turn that "except" into an "especially because." Or at least a "and it's fine that." Ahead of their son's debut as the star of The Bachelor next week, Peter Weber's parents Barbara and Peter Sr. were the guests on the Bachelor Party podcast with Rachel Lindsay and Becca Kufrin, and proved themselves to be incredibly sweet people. They had a lot of little things to share about their pilot son, like how he never complains and never got in trouble, and Pete's mom Barbara was happy to explain why it's absolutely not weird that he still lives at...
