Within the blink of an eye, 9-1-1 Season 8 rolled out its first half, leaving us in that lowly hiatus period until the show returns in late winter next year.
Coming off a shortened 9-1-1 Season 7, the series launched with another three-part opening disaster, which, by all accounts, was a rousing success. Then, it settled back into some character-focused storylines to close out the season.
But while the opening hour had everyone buzzing, subsequent hours were more hit or miss, with some stories being speedrun through, beloved characters being sidelined at times, and disjointed storylines leaving us frustrated.
(Disney/Ray Mickshaw)
Even with some missteps, the season has had some great moments and continues to be one of the most riveting series on television.
We’re reviewing the first eight hours of this season and offering some superlatives as we evaluate the good and the not-so-good.

But first, the joy: Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) get Mara [Askyler Bell] back, Gerrard (Brian Thompson) leaves the 118 to go work at Hotshots, and Bobby (Peter Krause) returns to the 118 as its rightful captain. And all of that is connected! Councilwoman Ortiz (Veronica Falcón) was responsible for putting Gerrard at the 118 in the first place, to ruin Hen’s life, and once Bobby appeals to Gerrard about what’s in his best interest, the other man records Ortiz (on the body cameras she wanted the firefighters to wear!) detailing her vendetta against Hen, who plays that during a hearing to shut down the 118 completely to help with budget cuts. To celebrate, TV ...

From Disney darling to Academy Award winner, Brie Larson has carved a unique path in Hollywood. At just 30 years old, she has already acted in various movies, from small independent ones to big blockbusters. She even tried her hand at directing, with projects such as The Arm (2012), Weighting (2013), Unicorn Store (2017), The Dew Project (2021).
Her latest movie is The Marvels, in which she played Captain Marvel again. However, it didn’t perform well, partly due to criticism from fans who disliked the story or the villain. Negative reviews further compounded the issue, and there were problems with promoting the movie because of actor strikes.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the colorful classic "The Wizard of Oz." Featuring a masterful use of Technicolor, the film offers some of the most vibrant hues ever seen in a motion picture, creating a stunning contrast between the fantastic world of Oz with the sepia-toned, mundane real world of teenager Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland). Over the 85 years since the film's theatrical debut, it's been re-released in theaters over and over again, and it's always ranked as one of the greatest films ever made. Even now, the film is still being celebrated, and this time the milestone 85th anniversary is bringing a new collection of Funko POPs to the table.

There’s no place like prison?
A federal grand jury today indicted a man in the 2005 theft of a pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Terry Martin is charged with one count of stealing a major artwork — specifically facing a charge of theft of an object of cultural heritage from the care, custody or control of a museum.
The indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota in Minneapolis, did not give Martin’s age or hometown, nor did it suggest a potential maximum prison term. It alleges that he stole the revered footwear from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Mn. At the time, the slippers were insured for $1 million, but a current fair-market appraisal value the slippers at $3.5 million, the Justice Department said.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Anouk's The Dark and Thee Wreckers' No Place Like Home, both by Rosto A.D. Rosto A.D. is a Dutch animator and director whose work might not be that well known, but who deserves more consideration. For this Sound and Vision I want to highlight two music videos he has made, that show different sides of his craft. First up there is the music video for No Place Like Home for the band Thee Wreckers. This is a pure Rosto-project, through and through. One of the core tenets of American mythology is the "rags to riches" story, the idea that any anonymous individual can, through sheer ambition and force of will, achieve lasting success in life. Nowhere is this myth best utilized than in the numerous stories about people making it big in show business. Most films about this topic throw enough hardship at their protagonists to keep things feeling realistic, but they make sure to perpetuate the myth: most of these stories have a happy ending worthy of a fairy tale.
"Pearl" is a different kind of fairy tale, and its emotionally harrowing finale subversively looks like a Technicolor happy ending while being anything but. This shouldn't come as much surprise to those who saw "X," which was co-writer and director Ti West's initial installment in what we now know is a trilogy of films. In "X," star Mia Goth portrayed both that film's nubile lead,...

Melvin Van Peebles and Perry Henzell made seminal 70s films – now their kids have recovered their fathers’ would-be classics
Justine Henzell and Mario Van Peebles both know what it’s like to grow up on movie sets as the child of a groundbreaking director. Henzell was six in 1972 when her father, Perry, finished The Harder They Come, Jamaica’s first full-length feature, starring the reggae legend Jimmy Cliff as a fugitive whose musical success coincides with his criminal notoriety. Van Peebles even starred in his father Melvin’s third film, the 1971 underground hit Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, which is credited with inspiring the Blaxploitation genre.
As adults, each of them has now had a hand in rescuing and restoring great movies by their fathers that might otherwise have been lost or neglected: Henzell’s more ruminative second feature No Place Like Home, which was lost for more than 20 years, and Van Peebles’s stylish,...

"Why country?" "Because it's three chords of truth." Neon has released a final "No Place Like Home" trailer for Wild Rose, the film about a country singer that just opened in theaters this weekend (full trailer). This first premiered at the Toronto & London Film Festivals last year, and stopped by SXSW this year. Acclaimed Irish actress Jessie Buckley plays a young mother from Glasgow, fresh out of prison, who decides to give up everything and move to Nashville to chase her dreams of becoming a country singer. An "uplifting story with an original soundtrack about family, dreams and reality, and three chords and the truth." The full cast includes Julie Walters, Sophie Okonedo, Jamie Sives, Gemma McElhinney, James Harkness, and Ashley Shelton. This has excellent reviews, saying it's "crowd-pleasing" with an "unbelievably great" performance from Buckley. It just started playing in theaters - check your local art house cinema to catch it.

A first-look image of Paolo Sorrentino’s TV series “The New Pope” has been released showing John Malkovich and Jude Law both wearing papal vestments, which appears to confirm rumors that Malkovich will play the new pontiff. The show is currently shooting in Venice.
Sky, HBO, and Canal Plus have also announced that “Homeland” star Mark Ivanir has joined the cast of “The New Pope,” as well as veteran British actor Henry Goodman (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”); Denmark’s Ulrich Thomsen (“The Blacklist”); and Italy’s Massimo Ghini (“No Place Like Home”). Details are being kept under wraps about their roles in the limited eight-episode series, which is not, strictly speaking, a second season of “The Young Pope.”
Malkovich’s casting had been previously announced. Sharon Stone is also widely reported to be a guest star on “The New Pope,” but a representative for production company Wildside declined to comment Wednesday.

Midsomer Murders ITV
Despite the demise of Poirot and the unexpected cancellation of Whitechapel, ITV continues to dominate the market for British TV detective shows. Within this genre, there is arguably no show more popular than Midsomer Murders, and more blood has been spilled on the streets of Britain’s most dangerous rural community in the stories included in Acorn’s latest DVD release. Midsomer Murders Set 23 features three tales that are intriguing, unpredictable and just a little bit peculiar.
The trilogy of tales begins with The Dark Rider, a spooky adventure in which local residents are seemingly being tormented by the vengeful spirit of a headless horseman. The guest stars include William Gaunt who is perhaps best known for his role as Martin Clunes’ Dad in No Place Like Home. His onscreen wife is Doctor Who veteran Eleanor Bron while James Callis has his work cut out playing twins.
