“When Vir Das hears an American comedian talk about being “canceled,” he can only laugh.
“Every time an American comedian complains about getting canceled, I’m like: ‘Grab a flight to India, just let me show you something,’ ” says the Indian stand-up comedian and actor.
Three years ago, Das got a taste of cancel culture, Indian style. His “Two Indias” routine, performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Nov. 12, 2021, in which he pointed to the absurd contrasts in his home country — “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang rape them at night” — triggered a furious backlash. Politicians from India’s ruling Bjp party accused him of defaming the nation and filed criminal charges. He got bombarded with death threats.

President-elect Donald Trump has been extremely controversial. The former President had a polarizing tenure from 2016 and it is only bound to be more during his upcoming presidency. Trump is also the oldest president of the USA and the only one with pending criminal charges on him.
Trump also reportedly has a connection to disgraced comedian and actor Bill Cosby. Cosby was accused of s*xual assault by over sixty women and was convicted of one count of aggravated assault in 2018. Trump mentioned once that he had never been a fan of the actor.

Jerry Seinfeld was proud of his bad report card. During a 1997 appearance on 60 Minutes, he showed Steve Kroft a framed copy of the test audience reaction to The Seinfeld Chronicles, the sitcom title that was eventually shortened to Seinfeld. “This is the audience test on the pilot back in 1989,” Seinfeld said. “‘Pilot performance weak.’”
Kroft read another choice assessment: “No segment of the audience was eager to watch the show again.”
“Here’s another great line,” said Seinfeld. “‘Viewers felt that Jerry needed a better backup ensemble.’ Can you imagine a better backup ensemble in the world than those three people?”
TV Guide got hold of the report as well, noting other highlights from the thumbs-down review:
“The more typical sitcom scenes of Jerry and his friends at common day locations were negatively received — as one viewer put it, ‘You can’t get too excited about going to the Laundromat.

"Seinfeld" was famously a grower in terms of popularity. The sitcom struggled in the Nielsen ratings throughout its first three seasons before rising in season 4 and, finally, becoming the juggernaut that it would continue to be until the gang called it quits at the end of season 9.
To get there, Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David had to tweak the formula a little to set the show apart from more amiable hit sitcoms like "Cheers" and "The Cosby Show." For folks familiar with Seinfeld's stand-up through his appearances on HBO comedy specials or "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," this irascibility was surprising. Sometimes, the show got downright mean — never nastier than the dispatching of George's bride-to-be Susan (Heidi Swedberg) in the classic episode "The Invitations."
Seinfeld himself got more acerbic than he had been in his act, but, because he was not and has yet to be a versatile actor,...

Bill Maher Says A Second Trump Presidency Would Be Like “Rebooting ‘The Cosby Show’ With Bill Cosby”
During his opening monologue for tonight’s installment of Real Time with Bill Maher, host Bill Maher cracked jokes across political aisles, taking hits at candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, as well as the Menedez brothers.
Getting started with a Halloween-themed joke ahead of the weekend, he said, “I’ve already seen so many people out, wearing crazy makeup, trying to scare people — what Trump calls campaigning. Kamala, also, in the Halloween mood; she loves it when the little kids come up on her porch and say those three little words: ‘Please don’t shoot.'”
Maher, whose prediction that Harris will win received cheers, cautioned that they’re not through the wringer yet, joking, “Her supporters are getting very nervous, they just can’t put their finger on it, but they feel something is wrong, like when Doug Emhoff drives the babysitter home.”
When that comment drew chuckles,...

As “Reasonable Doubt’s” Jax Stewart becomes the newest Black woman lawyer to grace our television screens, TheWrap wanted to take a trip down memory lane by listing the most iconic Black woman TV lawyers our time.
For fans, these roles may just be the characters we show up to watch in our favorite shows weekly, but for the actresses that play them and the writers that write them, their existence has impacted on-screen representation for Black women as well as the careers of Black Hollywood actresses.
That rings true for Kerry Washington’s role in “Scandal.” While we primarily recognize Olivia Pope as a crisis manager in the series, she was a former lawyer who often exhibited those tactics from her legal career. Until Washington signed on for the role — which ABC originally suggested a non-Black actress take — there hadn’t been a drama series with a leading Black woman on TV for 37 years.

Sean Combs continues to make headlines, not only for his crimes against humanity but for his real and fictional cameos on TV shows ranging from South Park to All That to MADtv.
Satirist Robert Smigel also got in some punches on Saturday Night Live, featuring Combs in a TV Funhouse cartoon called Diddy Kiddies.
Diddy Kiddies are three multi-ethnic middle-schoolers “solving mysteries, doing the bad thing, they out there going for the brass ring.” What mystery are the Kiddies trying to solve this week? They’re trying to get to the bottom of what exactly Diddy does for a living.
He doesn’t contribute much to his music videos, creative efforts that feature an all-star team of 2006 celebrities with Diddy popping in for a few frames. “Any clues to what I do?” he asks the kids. “Am I rapping?”
Diddy’s mouth opens and some words come out, but it doesn’t really qualify.

The title track from Like a Prayer is, by all accounts, Madonna’s most broadly beloved contribution to the pop-music canon. Even the Queen of Pop’s most ardent critics can’t help but bow at the altar of this gospel-infused conflation of spiritual and sexual ecstasy, a song that helped transform the singer from ’80s pop tart to bona fide icon in 1989.
Now, with its inclusion in the Marvel blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, “Like a Prayer” is reaching a whole new generation. Already one of Madonna’s most popular songs, it’s gotten an exponential boost since the film’s premiere, with over one million streams per day on Spotify alone.
To celebrate the song’s resurgence, we’re taking a look back at its evolution over the last 35 years, from its deceptively demure world premiere in that Pepsi commercial to its various live reinventions.

There are people who’ll tell you that Japanese folklore fantasy Monkey airing at 6pm on Friday nights in the 1980s was the highpoint of post-school, pre-bedtime TV scheduling in the UK. Let’s not tell them that they’re wrong; let’s just pity them for having mistimed their childhood by a decade.
The 1990s were the real peak of the 6pm weeknight TV slot. As long as there was no Wimbledon, snooker, cricket, athletics or Horse of the Year Show, that’s where anyone too young to go to the pub found joy. While grown-ups were watching the Six O’Clock News, kids in households flush enough to have a second television switched on BBC Two or Channel 4. When Variety broke down the 100 greatest TV shows of all time late last year, 12 creators were invited to discuss the series that inspired them. Among those welcomed was Lena Waithe, who didn’t waste a beat to credit “The Cosby Show” spinoff, “A Different World,” for sparking her early interest and getting her creative juices flowing.
“When it came time to name my production company, Hillman Grad just felt right,” Waithe says of the fictional college in the sitcom. “It represented a lot about who I was and how ‘A Different World’ was so inspirational to me as a writer, as a kid, as a person. It just made sense.” On June 29, Waithe will be honored with the Variety Creative Conscience Award at the 48th San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival (Frameline48) for her work and for helping directors tell their stories.

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

It’s that time of year again that we celebrate the ladies who brought us into this world, raised us and inspired us to be the people we have become. It seems all the more significant during this time in which moms have been spending a lot more time with their kiddos.
It would be interesting to see how some of our favorite tv moms would have handled quarantine, or if some kids would actually be “safer at home” with some of these moms. It’s quite likely that if Malcolm and his brothers didn’t blow the house up out of sheer boredom, Lois’s screaming would have brought the place down. It’s doubtful that Marie Barone could have maintained social distancing, and not popped over to criticize Debra’s latest meal or endeavor while continuing to spoil Raymond. Prior to creating the hit absurdist sitcom "Night Court," Reinhold Weege was a writer on "Barney Miller" and on "M*A*S*H," for which he received a grand reputation in American television. "Night Court," however, launched him into the stratosphere, as the show was part of the invaluable NBC Thursday night lineup that revolutionized television. "Night Court" came at the end of a block of programming that included "The Cosby Show" (which was responsible for saving "Night Court"), "Cheers," and "Family Ties," and the four sitcoms collectively buoyed the network to new heights. The series was nominated for 12 Emmys during its 1984 to 1992 run, with four wins going to star John Larroquette.
Despite the success of the show, Weege remained an affable, unglamorous, street-level bloke, flaunting his Chicago roots with pride. In the 2022 book "Barney Miller and the Files Of the Ol' One-Two" by Otto W. Bruno, Weege preferred presenting himself as low-fi and unassuming,...

Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.

For any television series reaching its 100th episode, looking back is a given, but there aren’t many shows with a 35-year history like ABC’s “The Conners,” the sitcom following the blue-collar family with an affinity for getting knocked down by life’s struggles while making us laugh along the way. “It’s just lucky, I guess,” says John Goodman, who plays patriarch Dan Conner. “Now all of a sudden, it’s 100 episodes. I can’t believe how fast the time went by, but I guess that’s just because I’m getting old.”
We first met the Lanford, Ill., clan on Oct. 18, 1988, when “Roseanne,” named for brash standup comedian Roseanne Barr, premiered on ABC. The cast included Roseanne’s big-hearted husband Dan (Goodman), their three salty young children Becky (Lecy Goranson), Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and D.J. Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.
Dr. Hibbert was kindly, bemused, but possessed of a strangely cold bedside manner. When Bart comes to see Dr.

We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

Raven-Symoné is clarifying a headline-making comment she made in 2014.
On Tuesday, the former Disney Channel star shared a new episode of her podcast Tea Time With Raven and Miranda, in which she recalled receiving hate a decade ago for telling Oprah Winfrey that she doesn’t consider herself to be “African American.”
“A lot of people on the internet thought I said that I wasn’t Black, and I never said that,” the former child star told her co-host and wife, Miranda Maday.
When asked by Maday what she meant, the That’s So Raven alum said, “When I say that ‘African-American’ doesn’t align with me, that label, it doesn’t mean that I’m negating my Blackness or I’m not Black. It means I am from this country. I was born here.”
She continued, “I understand my history. I understand where my ancestors come from. I also understand how much blood,...

There are few television shows where one moment, you can see wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper fully freaked over a poltergeist and the next, catch The Partridge Family‘s Shirley Jones in an ascot mildly put out by a haunted house. Such is the joy of Celebrity Ghost Stories.
One of the show’s many notable qualities is that the celebrities within one episode are strangely matched, like someone tore out pages from a bunch of People magazines from the 1970s and beyond, threw them in the air like confetti, and then picked 3 or 4 celebs at random to group together per episode. This isn’t a criticism — what would the alternative even be, weird theme nights? — but it’s amusingly whiplash-inducing all the same.
So naturally, Guide to the Unknown followed suit. This week, join Kristen and Will as they recount and comment on the hauntings of a batch of public...

It’s tough being the daughter of one of the coolest rock stars in the world. At least, that’s what Zoë Kravitz would have you believe as she was joined by Denzel Washington this week for the unveiling of her father Lenny Kravitz’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Four-time Grammy winner Kravitz was honored Tuesday with the star but got roasted by his daughter, who took the opportunity to gently mock her dad, the rock star and style icon.
“I’ve seen the way you show up and take care of the people you love,” the Big Little Lies actress said from the podium. “I’ve seen your incredible dedication to your art. But mostly, I’ve seen through your shirts. According to my dad, if it doesn’t expose your nipples, it’s not a shirt. And sure, it used to embarrass me when you...
