In 1981,
Peter Brook Brook staged his adaption of Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen". He adapted the script with
Jean-Claude Carrière, and the original score was adapted for a chamber orchestra by
Marius Constant. The show premiered in Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Paris in November 1981. In order to have daily performances, he had to rely on three different casts, so the singer could rest in between.
He went on by deciding to record the performances on film. He emptied all seats, and restaged his direction using all parts of the theater. Furthermore, he kept the three different casts to direct three parallel movies.
