- March 1980. Paul, a director of advertising films, takes Maurice in. Maurice is a strange guy, someone who crashes in and lives off of schemes. Especially when Paul, as is often the case, is not at home. Coming back from a trip one day, he is surprised to find Anne in front of him, the one who left him two years earlier. His goal today is not to return to live with Paul. But to get him to marry a Polish woman who will be able to leave her country where she has just spent two years in prison and where her opposition to the regime has become too conspicuous. The idea is unexpected, but Paul ends up accepting. His meeting with Polish opponents exiled in Paris completely baffles him. He is even about to give up. But the voice of Zosia, his fiancée, on the phone warms his heart. And he leaves once all the papers are ready. In Warsaw, he discovers the beautiful Zosia and her Polish fiancé, Marek. The wedding takes place, then a honeymoon with Marek who does not leave them. But, because his papers are not in order, Paul must return to Paris alone. And he mourns. Zosia has really become for him the one he must get out of Poland. So the day she calls him, he drives like a madman to pick her up for a return trip that looks like a real honeymoon. In Paris, Paul resumes his work and Zosia is literally caught up in her Polish friends. They don't see each other anymore; Paul is very sad about it. And when they start living together again, Zosia can't stand being uprooted. She leaves for the United States. Paul feels really lost, especially since he has sent Maurice away. In the fall of 1981, when Anne has arranged for Zosia to become a French citizen, Paul meets her by chance in an airport. A reunion, enthusiasm, mad love: on his return from Poland, Zosia will never leave him. But the day after this meeting, a state of war is declared.
