As of 2021, this is the only version of Hollywood Squares in which contestants could answer the question of a deciding square incorrectly and the opponent could win the square and the game. In all other versions, the contestant had to earn the square on their own by answering the question correctly.
This was the first program to combine two game shows into one single program.
Gene Rayburn's biography said that Peter Marshall was asked about hosting the program, but declined because he didn't like how Mark Goodson changed the format. In a later interview, Marshall admitted that it was strange seeing Bauman host the program, and he was glad it was cancelled after one season.
Reruns aired for the first time in 2018 on BUZZR, a channel dedicated to reruns of old game shows. Reruns didn't air before that due to licensing issues; Fremantle owned the rights to Match Game, while Sony Pictures Studios owned the rights to Hollywood Squares.
This program replaced Fantasy (1982), which was co-hosted by former Hollywood Squares (1965) emcee Peter Marshall.
