The suspense is over: Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” will indeed have its world premiere and compete at the Cannes Film Festival, the fest announced Thursday.
“Intermezzo” from Abdellatif Kechiche, the Palme d’Or-winning director of “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” has also been added to the competition slate.
The star-studded movie has been widely anticipated as a festival highlight but wasn’t included in Cannes’ official selection announcement on April 18. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux told journalists several times that day that he hoped for post-production on Tarantino’s film to be completed in time for the film to be shown at the festival. Fremaux said Tarantino was eager to be back at Cannes and was working hard to finish the film by May, which was a challenge because it was shot in 35mm, which takes longer to edit than digital film, and is slated for a July release.

We’re just a few weeks away from the annual unveiling of the Cannes Film Festival lineup, and, as ever, speculation is running high about what will and won’t strut down the Croisette from May 14-25. Also as usual, nothing is set in stone until fest chief Thierry Frémaux makes the announcement. However, we’ve been able to glean some intel into what’s likely to be in store for the official selection — and what is not.
Regarding the big-ticket titles, the one on everyone’s lips is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. While we’ve heard a possible May 21 date floated — which would slot in nicely given it would mark 25 years to the day that Tarantino debuted Pulp Fiction, going on to win the Palme d’Or — and sources have indicated the film is likely to make it, we also understand that no firm...

In 2018, the Korean film business stumbled, as local films made with blockbuster budgets and targeting the usual high seasons of Chuseok and Christmas last year failed to deliver blockbuster earnings. So Korean distributors have embraced some tactics to enhance their bottom lines.
Genre films “Monstrum,” “Fengshui,” “The Negotiation,” “Take Point,” “Swing Kids” and “Drug King” tripped over each other and did healthy B.O. but not the blockbuster business that distributors anticipated.
“The South Korean market has been supersaturated and the market has reached its limit. It is pretty obvious that no one would make significant profit when there are four to five films to watch in one season,” one disappointed producer told Variety.
Now, key distributors have announced lineups filled with fewer blockbusters and more small to mid-sized titles. At the same time they are accelerating overseas expansion and diversifying content formats.

The lineup for the Cannes Film Festival won’t be officially unveiled until April 18, but early indications suggest that Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Kristen Stewart thriller “Against All Enemies” will all make their world premieres on the Croisette in May.
If Cannes director Thierry Frémaux is able to snag those three films, the French festival will already be looking at a starrier and potentially more glamorous edition than last year, when a combination of factors — a royal wedding, an industry-led embargo on Netflix movies, and the perception that fall festivals serve as better launchpads for Oscar hopefuls — led to one of the most underwhelming Cannes competition slates in years. The program itself wasn’t bad, but light on English-language fare and established directors, meaning that for the majority of American press, there literally wasn’t much to write home about.

Neon has taken U.S. rights to this year’s Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner Clemency from filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu and starring Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard.
Woodard plays female prison warden Bernadine Williams, who after years of carrying out death row executions, comes up against one inmate who forces her to confront the psychological and emotional demons her job has created. The Ace Pictures Entertainment production also stars Aldis Hodge (Hidden Figures), Richard Schiff and Wendell Pierce. The film was also produced by Bronwyn Cornelius Productions and Julian Cautherley.
“Making Clemency has been a life-changing soul journey,” said Chukwu, who also wrote the feature, “and I am thrilled to partner with the team at Neon to share the film with audiences across the country.”
The deal was negotiated by Neon and Paradigm on behalf of the filmmakers.

2018 was, by most accounts, a mixed bag of a year for South Korean cinema. Where critics darling Lee Chang-dong returned to the scene after an eight-year hiatus to much fanfare and applause with “Burning”, small films like “Little Forest” and “Intimate Strangers” ended up being more well received than tentpole blockbusters like Kim Jee-woon’s “Illang: The Wolf Brigade”, for example. 2019 has begun very strongly, with “Extreme Job” going on to become the 2nd highest grossing South Korean film of all time on the domestic box-office. Here’s a list of some films we can look forward to with much anticipation in the remainder of the year.

Neon has acquired the North American rights to Bong Joon-Ho’s family drama “Parasite” from Cj Entertainment.
The drama marks Bong’s comeback to Korean-language film following “Okja” and “Snowpiercer.” It’s also his fourth collaboration with Song Kang-Ho, who starred in “Snowpiercer,” “The Host,” and “Memories of Murder.”
“Parasite” also marks Bong’s fifth collaboration with Neon CEO Tom Quinn, who released “Snowpiercer” while at the helm of Radius. “Snowpiercer” grossed $86.8 million at the worldwide box office in 2013.
Bong directed “Parasite” from his own script. The film followed two families who were worlds apart yet somewhat alike, portraying a striking reality of the world we live in. The movie, which just wrapped production, also stars Lee Sun-Kyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, Choi Woo-Shik, and Park So-Dam.
“We’re very excited to partner with Tom Quinn and the team at Neon,” Bong said. “It’s like reuniting a great team of old friends.

Earlier this year, we reported that “Snowpiercer” filmmaker Bong Joon-ho had just begun filming his latest project, “Parasite.” Not much was known about the project at the time, but considering the director’s filmography, we were anxiously awaiting any news we can get our hands on about the film. Well, thanks to a recent post on Twitter, we now have our first look at “Parasite.”
Bong Joon-ho is known for his unique films, such as the aforementioned “Snowpiercer,” as well as “The Host” and most recently “Okja.” And while the first look at “Parasite” doesn’t necessarily look as stylized or out-there as his other works, we have no doubt that the director has some tricks up his sleeve.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about “Okja” filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming film “Parasite.” A little more than a year ago, we knew that the South Korean director would tackle the project next, but all we basically had was a title. Now, thanks to Variety, we have a bit more information on what we can expect.
According to Bong, himself, the title “Parasite” is a bit of a misnomer, as the film will feature zero actual parasites or alien creatures.

South Korea’s top filmmaker, Bong Joon-ho has begun shooting “Parasite,” his first film since “Okja” which was backed by Netflix and debuted in competition last year in Cannes. It stars Song Kang-ho, Korea’s leading character actor.
The film is a drama about a family of four, in which each member has unique characteristics. Bong says that, despite the title, the film does not include either parasites or alien creatures.
Production started on Sunday. “The film had been originally scheduled to start shooting in our studio on May 25, but was pushed back slightly,” a spokesperson from Goyang Aqua Studio, an outfit that specializes in underwater shooting, told Variety on Wednesday.
After shooting “Snowpiercer” and “Okja” largely in English, the film is Bong’s first Korean-language title since his 2009 “Mother.” He has reassembled production elements from “Mother.” Barunson E&A is on board as producer. Cj Entertainment is set as the Korean distributor.

From legendary cult filmmaker David DeCoteau (Puppet Master III, Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-o-Rama) and producer Charles Band (Re-Animator) comes one the most beloved B-horror/fantasy films of the 1980s (at least for me)… Creepozoids – which finally comes to Blu-ray from Full Moon Features.
Blending key elements of genre hits Mad Max and Alien (while also incorporating elements of Band’s Parasite and Metalstorm) but produced on a tenth of their budgets, Creepozoids tells the tale of five Army deserters who wander the post-apocalyptic, post-industrial La landscape seeking shelter from an increasingly toxic environment and poisonous rain. They end up in an abandoned laboratory where they explore, have sex and eventually run afoul of a cavalcade of genetically engineered creatures including mutant rats, a monstrous baby, a massive, bloodthirsty H.R. Giger-esque beast…and something even more malevolent.

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.
Instead, the 1984 film focuses mainly on a man (Peter Liapis) who inherits a mansion from his father (rocker Richard Des Barres) and ends up conjuring...

Charles Band, who currently runs Full Moon Features, started Wizard Video in 1980 and was a pioneer in the early days of the home video market. As a child of the 80′s, the video store was my second home. There were a few shops here in St. Louis that carried some big box titles and among them, I always remembered Wizard Video. One of Wizard Video’s most notorious releases was I Spit on Your Grave. In the past few years, VHS tapes have become a collector’s item of sorts. Some people I know go crazy and try and collect all the VHS tapes they can find. I am a bit more selective with what I pick up (I tend to go for big boxes and releases that have some nostalgia for me). There is no doubt that there is still a market in VHS. Is it the best format to watch a film, no. However, there is a certain allure to watch a film on VHS. It feels more organic and feels dynamic and...

Oh, how fondly we remember those giant VHS boxes horror films came in back in the day. Sure, they were a bitch to fit onto your shelf, but the packaging was so cool.
Horror guru Charles Band and Full Moon Features have discovered Wizard Video's treasure trove of these classic boxes, and you can get yours, with its authentically duplicated film, beginning next week.
The videos become available on February 12th, but you can check out the new Wizard Video website now, and by all means "like" Wizard Video on Facebook.

We know all know Jennifer Aniston got her start running in terror from a tiny evil leprechaun in, you know, Leprechaun, but did you know that most A-listers have a crappy horror film lurking in their past somewhere? From Paul Rudd to Jack Black, Demi Moore to Amy Adams, the biggest names in Hollywood have at one point been covered in corn syrup blood and chased by a prop chainsaw. So enjoy 10 amazing actors and actresses who had to pay their dues at the business end of a fake meat cleaver. Our personal favorite? Julianne Moore. Can anyone name a dumber movie death than hers? We honestly want to know!
1) Paul Rudd, Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers (1995)
It would be so cute to see Paul Rudd carrying a baby! Unless of course he’s carrying a baby while sprinting down a hospital corridor to escape Michael Myers in this 1995 horror film.

Blade Runner, First Blood, Wrath Of Khan … 1982 was a high water mark for genre movies, but we won't see its like again
Everyone has their favourite period of cinema. For some, it never gets better than the snappy dialogue of the 1940s; plenty espouse the more freeform cinema of the 1970s; who knows, maybe in some far-flung future there may even be people who claim that the 2010s were where it's at. But if you want to get more specific, then you must turn to the obsessives. The geeks. Because for those argumentative science fiction, horror and fantasy fans, those finickity lovers of genre ephemera, cinema achieved true perfection in a single year: 1982.
In 1982 there was an unprecedented investment in the fantastic. Subjects that would previously have been confined to B-movies, to exploitation flicks, to drive-in fodder became the stock-in-trade of the mainstream. It was a year that changed Hollywood,...

ShoulderHill Entertainment co-founder Steven Addair announced a quintet of fright features the company will be shooting soon under the banner of Five Flix to Fear. All five of the Flix, which run the gamut of horror sub-genres, will be lensed in 3D.
“Fans of horror are so underestimated, and that’s exactly what Five Flix to Fear is about—not underestimating the fans,” Addair says “There’s nothing like having the lights go down and watching a good horror movie. It’s our job to give them something they’ll enjoy.”
The lineup is as follows:
• Otis, written and to be directed by Halloween: H20 and 5ive Days To Midnight co-scripter Robert Zappia, is a variation on the Beauty and the Beast story in which the former is a sorority girl and the latter is a disfigured teen who supposedly died 30 years earlier.
• Reactor 4, scripted by Nicholl finalist Sam Strachman and Addair,...

Every fancy pants movie star has a skeleton in their closet that they don’t want to speak of. Whether it is Jason Alexander in The Burning, Tom Hanks in He Knows You’re Alone, or Demi Moore in Parasite – some of the biggest names in show business have started off their careers doing horror films. Perhaps the biggest of them all is ladies man George Clooney, who cut his teeth on the films Return of the Killer Tomatoes, and my spotlight movie of the day – Return to Horror High. Instead of talking to George, I got in touch with actress Lori Lethin to wax nostalgic about this overlooked slasher.
Jason Bene: After starring in Bloody Birthday and The Prey, were you happy to do another slasher film, especially one that was spoofing the genre?
Lori Lethin: I loved doing Return to Horror High. I thought it was so...

Are aliens out there? Do they really exist? Well, they are out there this weekend with the release of both Columbia Pictures Battle: Los Angeles and Walt Disney’s Pictures Mars Needs Moms, so we decided to talk about what makes a memorable, and all around cool alien. Where it be computers, puppets, or just a really neat paint job… these aliens bring their A-Game in the design department!
Top Ten Alien Designs Honorable Mention: The Bugs – Starship Troopers (1997)
Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997) introduced a whole new generation to the glorious goodness of cheesy sci-fi fun, complete with his own blend of bloody over-the-top action and violence and corny dialogue. But, the best part of the movie were the “bugs” (or, aliens) with which the humans were deeply embroiled in intergalactic battle. The “bugs” were a nasty bunch, primitive and wild on the surface, but organized and efficient as...

The nightmares don't just take place on Elm Street, they also take place in the laboratory of Dr. Heiter. Seems like all eyes were on The Human Centipede this weekend, the must-see shocker from director Tom Six that's slicing audiences right down the middle into "love it" and "hate it" camps. Horror Squad offered one of the first looks at The Human Centipede, way back in October, and that's just one of the reasons you should be visiting Horror Squad -- they've got their finger on the pulse of horror. If you haven't been reading, here's what you've been missing...
Alison Nastasi cuts right to the core of The Human Centipede in her in-depth review. What is "the thing in the cage"? It's easy to explain away, but it's still the stuff of nightmares. The Horror Squad Movie Club examines Don Coscarelli's adaptation of the Joe R. Lansdale story...

The Runaways, the biopic about the groundbreaking all-girl rock band starring Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, just opened this weekend - and People caught up with real-life members to catch up on their lives 30 years after their split. Best known for hits like "Cherry Bomb" and "Queens of Noise" and controversy-courting style in the days when rock music was dominated by men, the band became an international sensation, inspiring countless artists who followed. "People would say, 'Girls can't play rock 'n' roll,' because socially, rock 'n' roll is sexual and that was threatening to a wide majority of people,...

In Part 1, we looked back at the Golden Age of 3D Horror. Now let's fast-forward to… The 1980's Revival (the tech got better, the movies got worse) Parasite (1982) Dreary sci-fi nonsense about a monster burrowing in and out of various denizens inhabiting post-apocalyptic Earth. Why Watch It: It features a very young Demi Moore in her first movie, and the slimy title creature was created by Stan Winston...but that's about it. Friday The 13th Part III (1982) Actually one of the weaker entries in the saga, but the 3D deaths are fun. Why Watch It: It sets the scene for Part IV, one of the best in the series, plus this is the movie...

The Final Chapter (read Part 2 here)! We have Howard the Duck, Freejack and Shyamalan flicks on the list; these are never good signs. Nonetheless we are bringing it all to you in full-color and in 3-D. (Ed. Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.
The visual effects category pulled on our heartstrings this year due to the loss of Stan Winston, who was noted en memoriam along with other heroes, Vampira, Leonard Rosenman and Charles H. Schneer...
