Final acting role of famous director King Vidor. His earlier roles had exclusively been uncredited bit parts in films of many years before, apart from a joke cameo as himself in "It's A Great Feeling", which also features similar cameos by fellow directors Raoul Walsh and Michael Curtiz. Vidor took this late acting role (an untypically substantial one as the hero's grandfather) after it had been turned down by another legendary veteran director George Cukor. It is said that, when Vidor met Cukor socially soon after he had completed his part, the latter responded to Vidor's enthusiasm about his experience by airily saying, "Oh, I turned that part down months ago!"

James Toback wrote the lead role of Byron Levin for Harvey Keitel, but was told he would only get finance for the film if he cast Ray Sharkey or Jeff Goldblum. (From Harvey Keitel: The Art of Darkness by Marshall Fine).
