New month, new recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. The second installment of 2024 features selections reflecting holidays, events or traditions of February.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s horror offerings include reincarnation, vampires and more.
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975)
Pictured: Michael Sarrazin and Jennifer O’Neill in The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson.
Author Max Ehrlich handled the screenplay for his own novel’s adaptation. Despite its quirky title, though, this movie is a rather surreal and sad, not to mention unpredictable viewing experience. The obsession with metaphysical matters seeped into ’70s cinema, and this trippy psycho-horror gem, one directed by J. Lee Thompson, is a valid reflection of that bygone trend.

The man is a consummate professional. In the outside world, he could be anyone — just another ridiculous looking dude somewhere between the ages of 32 and 48, the everyguy in line behind you at an Ace Hardware store or in front of you at McDonald’s. But sitting here, in an unfinished WeWork office space, is this slender, limber apex predator in his natural habitat, and an extremely patient one. He’s perched here for days, just staring out the window at a ritzy apartment in Paris. Watching. Waiting. Whiling away the hours,...

Every so often I come across a movie from years ago that I simply overlooked or didn’t have the opportunity to see. After viewing the Kino-Lorber Blu-ray release of Caravans, I have to say I’m rather sorry I missed this one.
Caravans, directed by James Fargo, had a brief release from Universal in 1978, after which it disappeared with only an ABC-TV airing and sporadic appearances on cable to mark its existence. The trailer promises that Caravans is the greatest desert adventure since Lawrence of Arabia, which clearly it is not. However, there is much to enjoy with this new video release.
The year is 1948 and American diplomat Mark Miller (Michael Sarrazin) is sent to the fictional Middle Eastern country of Zakharstan to search for Ellen Jasper(Jennifer O’ Neill), the daughter of a U.S. senator. Ellen has left her husband, Colonel Nazrullah (Behrouz...

Here’s a confession: I’m not really a cat guy. I have nothing against the critters, and I do get why a lot of people love them; loyalty, beauty, etc. I’m just a dog person. I’m assuming the lead character of Eye of the Cat (1969) is too, because he has one lulu of a cat phobia in this sly and amusing thriller.
Ailurophobia is the exact term for an extreme fear of cats, and I won’t use the word again because it’s a bitch to spell and I ain’t no fancy lad neither. Eye of the Cat was released in June by Universal with the tagline “Terror that tears the screams right out of your throat!” This would not be true unless you also suffer from a debilitating fear of felines; but what you do get is a solid little mystery with a lot of twists,...

Livingston, Mont.– Actress Margot Kidder had a roller coaster ride of a life, which ended in Montana on May 13, 2018, at the age of 69. From her modest beginnings as a Canadian performer in TV and B-movies, to her work with Brian De Palma, and her peak as Lois Lane in the first set of “Superman” movies, Kidder forged her own path. That path included a bipolar disorder that plagued her later years.
She was born Margaret Ruth Kidder in Canada, and graduated from Havergal College, a boarding school in Toronto. She made her film debut in a short film called “The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar” in 1968, and followed that up with her American debut in “Gaily Gaily” (1969). She also did television for the Canadian Broadcast Company during that era, and was a semi-regular on “Nichols” (1971) with James Garner. She relocated to Los Angeles, and began a string of appearances in notable films,...

Yes, we’ve all lived before; when I come back I don’t care who I am as long as I’m in the 1%. When Michael Sarrazin reaches into a previous life his big sacrifice is to abandon the gorgeous Cornelia Sharpe for the gorgeous Jennifer O’Neill, arousing the suspicions of his wife in his previous life, gorgeous Margot Kidder. The show looks great, Jerry Goldsmith’s music is beautiful, but it runs up against real trouble in the script and directing departments.

Margot Kidder, who is probably best known for portraying Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the 1970s and ’80s Superman movies and starred in many other films including The Amityville Horror while struggling with mental illness, has died. She was 69. The Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston, Mt, said she died Sunday but did not reveal a cause of death.
Kidder appeared with many of Hollywood’s leading men during her 50-year career, including Robert Redford and James Garner, it was her role as the plucky Daily Planet reporter with a penchant for finding trouble in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV (1987) that shot her to fame.
Born on October 17, 1948, in Yellowknife, Canada, Kidder started her career in TV in the late 1960s, guesting on such shows as McQueen and The Mod Squad. She starred opposite Gene Wilder in the 1970 film Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx...

J. Lee Thompson is an auteur – he’s an amazing director with a personal sense of style, usually low-key and humorous, and actors love working with him. With films like The Guns of Navarone (1961), Cape Fear (1962), Conquest of the Planet Of the Apes (1972) and Battle For the Planet Of The Apes (1973), J. Lee Thompson is a favorite amongst genre fans. My personal favorite is The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud (1975), starring Michael Sarrazin, Jennifer O’Neill and Margot Kidder. If you haven’t seen this film, you need to run to your nearest video/dvd rental store – David Fincher currently holds the remake rights, so it’s only a matter of time before we see a redux! In the early 80s, Thompson directed the popular horror cult classic Happy Birthday To Me (1981), starring Melissa Sue Anderson (of Little House On The Prairie fame) Glenn Ford (who needs no introduction), and Lesleh Donaldson...

"Michael Sarrazin, a tall, dark-eyed Canadian actor who starred opposite Jane Fonda in Sydney Pollack's 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, died of cancer Sunday," reports Claire Noland in the Los Angeles Times. He was 70. Noland quotes from a 1994 interview given to the Toronto Star in which Sarrazin recalled working on Horses: "You could have paid me a dollar a week to work on that. It hits you bolt upright; I still get really intense when I watch it. We stayed up around the clock for three or four days.... We stayed in character. Pollack said we should work until signs of exhaustion. Fights would break out among the men; women started crying."
"Sarrazin was one of the last actors to come up through the old studio system, signing with Universal in 1965," writes John Griffin in the Montreal Gazette. "After an indifferent start in television and movies-of-the week,...

Michael Sarrazin, a handsome, sensitive-looking leading man who was a staple in movies throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, died of cancer on Sunday, April 17. He was 70 years old.
Disc Dish’s favorite film starring Mr. Sarrazin was 1975’s The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, a creepy horror mystery about a college professor who begins to experience eerie flashbacks from what he believes a previous life incarnation. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, the film foresaw a slew of life/after-life movies that we’ve seen over the subsequent decades, including The Sixth Sense (1991), What Dreams May Come (1998) and Dead Again (1991).
Unfortunately, Peter Proud has never been released on DVD, so it might be hard to track down (even on VHS). Here are five other films Afeaturing the late Mr. Sarrazin that we recommend and are a bit easier to obtain.

Actor Michael Sarrazin, whose star rose in the 1960s, has died after a brief battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. The charismatic and handsome Sarrazin found stardom almost as soon as he entered the film business, with a prominent co-starring role with George C. Scott in the 1967 comedy The Flim Flam Man. Other prominent roles in the 60s and 70s included The Sweet Ride, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, For Pete's Sake, Sometimes a Great Notion, The Gumball Rally and most prominently, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Sarrazin was said to have been the first choice for the role of Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy, but Jon Voight ultimately rode to stardom in the role. Sarrazin's career went into decline by the late 1970s but he continued to work in low-budget films and on television. Click here for more...

Originally cast as Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy, only to be replaced at the last minute by Jon Voight, Sarrazin never achieved real stardom and his career sort of faded away but he did star in a string of memorable films in the 1970′s including They Shoot Horses, Don't They (1969), Sometimes A Great Notion (1970), Harry In Your Pocket (1973), and as the title character in The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud (1975). Originally from Canada, he was an excellent actor who will always be best remembered for the 1973 made-for-tv epic Frankenstein The True Story in which he played the soulful monster opposite Leonard Whiting’s Dr. Frankenstein.

Actor Michael Sarrazin, whose roles in the genre have ranged from The Creature in the 1973 TV movie "Frankenstein: The True Story" to a small supporting part in FeardotCom, has passed away in Montreal after a brief battle with cancer. He was 70.
Aside from the aforementioned appearances, along with a few more on TV's "The Outer Limits" and "Poltergeist: The Legacy", Sarrazin was best known (and beloved) by horror fans for his portrayal of the titular character in director J. More After Dark Originals news! How do you like it, how do you like it?! Here’s another fun interview with husband and wife writing team Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson discussing Fertile Ground, which Gierasch directed from Anderson’s script.
Known for their wilder side (see their Night of the Demons remake), here’s what the duo had to say:
Gierasch: “It’s a big, big, big departure for me, because it’s like one of those early-70’s ghost stories like Julia (which was based on the Peter Straub book The Haunting of Julia); it’s like Burnt Offerings…it’s similar to The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It’s sort of a very out-of-time, ghosty story that’s really more of a drama about a woman and her relationship with her husband and the loss of a child.”
Chris Haberman: Where did the inspiration for the story come from?...

The last couple of years have been very busy for Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. Following the remake Night of the Demons , the duo moved into Fertile Ground , an After Dark original film that marks a decided change of tonal pace for the creative team. In Shock's interview with Gierasch and Anderson, the pair shed some light on what we can expect when Ground opens this Friday. Shock Till You Drop: Out of the films released through the Originals line, this one doesn't appear to have the staple horror boogeymen - no vampires, no zombies. Adam Gierasch: This is a psychological, slightly supernatural thriller. After directing his next film, The Social Network, Academy Award-nominated director David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) will reunite with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for the first time since the two paired on Seven in 1995. According to THR, Fincher is attached to direct a remake of the 1975 movie The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, which Walker will adapt from the book of the same name by Max Ehrlich.
The original film script, also written by Ehrlich, told the story of Peter Proud, a college professor who started investigating his dreams when he came to the realization that they were actually images from his own past life experiences. Part of the popular supernatural thriller movie trend of the mid-70s, Peter Proud was criticized for a subplot involving incest. Fincher and Walker are expected to stay true to the novel, but update it for a modern audience.

Fifteen years after working together on "Se7en," director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker are reuniting for a new adaptation of Max Ehrlich's novel "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The book was previously made into a 1975 movie by Ehrlich, who adapted his own work, and J. Lee Thompson, best known for helming the original "Cape Fear."
As with many films dealing with reincarnation, the plot is pretty ridiculous even if you believe in the concept. A college professor has nightmares involving a murder, which he eventually realizes was his own, from a previous life. And in the process of discovery, he unknowingly becomes romantically involved with his (past incarnation's) daughter.
Despite the silly and scandalous storyline, Ehrlich's book could lend itself to an interesting, Hitchcockian sort of psychological thriller. Unfortunately, Thompson's original film is apparently not good for much more than seeing a...

The Hollywood Reporter reports David Fincher is now attached to direct the adaptation of Max Ehrlich's novel "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" for Columbia Pictures with his Seven screenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker, aboard to pen the screenplay.
The story centers on a college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.
The THR article says the supernatural thriller drew heat for a subplot involving incest, but the director and writer will be heading back to the novel as the source material and will contemporize the story.

Everything old is new again for David Fincher. He's brought in Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the 1975 novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, which was also turned into a film that same year.
The Hollywood Reporter says Fincher will set up shop at Columbia, co-producing with Michael De Luca. Proud is a college professor who begins having strange nightmares that appear to include images from a previous life, so he starts to investigate what might be causing them. One of the nightmares involves murder - Murder! - and, at least in the movie, Margot Kidder.
This journey eventually leads him across the country to the mysterious woman he's been seeing in his dreams, but what does it mean? What does it all mean?...

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, Columbia Pictures is now behind the David Fincher-directed remake of 1975’s The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud. Fincher had previously been working on the project for Paramount, where it had been in development for almost a decade.
The Reincarnation update reunites Fincher with SE7EN scripter Andrew Kevin Walker as well as Michael De Luca, who was president of production at New Line at the time of that serial-killer hit and will produce the new film with Alison Rosenzweig. The original movie, directed by J. Lee Thompson and scripted by Max Ehrlich from his novel, stars Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder in the tale of a man who is plagued by nightmares that turn out to be visions of a past life, and sets out to uncover their source. While the redux’s setting will be modernized, Fincher and Walker, who also co-scripted the upcoming Wolfman remake,...

Sure, David Fincher is currently working on the much talked about Facebook origin story The Social Network. But he's also working on several other things. For one, THR's Heat Vision is reporting that the director of Se7en is reteaming with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for an adaptation of Max Ehrlich's novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Director David Fincher and his former “Seven” writer Andrew Kevin Walker (Really? Two first names? That’s just greedy) will be remaking the 1975 supernatural thriller “The Reincarnation of Peter Proud” by Max Ehrlich, who wrote the novel and the movie adaptation for director J. Lee Thompson. The film didn’t set the world on fire, though apparently it did stir up a bit of controversy for including a subplot that involved incest. The story follows college professor Peter Proud, who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions for some answers. With his girlfriend in tow, our hero discovers a woman and her daughter may be keys to unlocking his past life, though perhaps he should just have left it all alone. Past lives, I tell ya, unless you were Cleopatra or Abraham Lincoln...

The writer/director tag team behind 1995's thriller masterpiece Se7en are getting back in the ring to tackle The Reincarnation of Peter Proud based on the novel of the same name. Seasoned thriller director David Fincher will be at the helm with Andrew Kevin Walker (who also wrote one of my favorites, Brainscan) at the quill and ink. The novelized Peter Proud was written in 1973 by Max Ehrlich who at the same time adapted his story into a screenplay to be later directed by J. Lee Thompson. According to THR, Proud is about a college professor who starts seeing progressively more terrifying visions of what he discovers to be a past life. When he reconnects with people who were a part of the life he once lived, he realizes he may be in more danger than he had planned on. Tossed into the mix is a weird subplot involving ...

David Fincher announced today that his next project after the Aaron Sorkin scripted Facebook movie The Social Network will be an adaptation of the Max Ehrlich novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Better still he’ll be teaming up with Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker and producer Michael De Luca.
It’s been fourteen years since Seven catapulted the dark visions and tight direction of Fincher to an ebullient audience and to have Fincher and his team concentrating on a supernatural thriller is an awesome prospect.
Heat Vision at THR have this synopsis:
“Proud” centers on a college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.

Se7en... I'll never forget the first time I watched it, nestled with friends into the old seats at Gettysburg's Majestic Theater, all of us enamored, shocked, chilled, and buzzed on the thrill of the film IMDb ranks as #27 out of the Top 250 Films. It's one of those movies that elicits glazed eyes of fandom at its mention. But could the magic be brought to life again?
The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog reports that Se7en alums David Fincher, Andrew Kevin Walker, and Michael De Luca are re-teaming to make a new adaptation of Max Ehrlich's The Reincarnation of Peter Proud for Columbia Pictures. The story focuses on a college prof who becomes plagued by recurring dreams and nightmares that he realizes are memories of a past life.

I know a lot of people are still unsure about the fact that David Fincher's next project is a movie about Facebook [1], but if that's not your cup of tea, his follow-up project should put you at ease. For his next movie, it looks like Fincher will be bringing back together the same team that worked on his 1995 thriller Se7en starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, in order to remake the 1975 film The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. According to Heat Vision [2], screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker will adapt the Max Ehrlich novel on which the movie was based, while Fincher will produce along with former New Line president of production Michael De Luca. The story centers on a college professor who begins to have visions of a previous life, and finds himself drawn to a woman and her daughter who are seemingly connected to his past. David Fincher’s career is pretty much flawless. You might cry “blasphemy!” simply because of Alien 3, but I’ll be very honest with you: that is not a bad entry in that series, no matter what you might believe. And then Fight Club? Zodiac? Seven?
Now, he’s working on an adaptation of the Max Ehrlich novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, to be scripted by Seven’s Andrew Kevin Walker. The story has already been self-adapted by the author once for a film in the mid-1970s, starring Margot Kidder.

With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.”

David Fincher. Andrew Kevin Walker. Michael De Luca. Even outside of SE7en, these three have accomplished so much in the film world. In 1995, when these three came together, they created one of the most engaging and original thrillers, arguably, in the history of the art. Now, 14 years later, they are coming back together. Heat Vision is reporting that the team is stepping up to adapting Max Ehrlich’s novel The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud.

David Fincher may have already had Alien 3 on his resumé when he directed the runaway hit Se7en but there is no doubt that the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman starring thriller put him on the map, and so it will come as good news to those who have watched his career patchily develop that he is currently attached to direct an Andrew Kevin Walker adaptation of the 1975 Max Ehrlich novel (and film) The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud.
The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog has it that the adaptation will contemporize the supernatural-thriller about a college professor who starts to have visions and nightmares of a past life.
Fincher, who is just about to start shooting the Aaron Sorkin scripted The Social Network, will produce the remake alongside Se7en producer Michael De Luca reforming a powerful trinity that put together one of the best and most haunting films of the 90s.

David Fincher's next gig, following Facebook app The Social Network which he's just started shooting, looks set to be The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It'll re-team the director with Seven's writer Andrew Kevin Walker, who will adapt the novel by Max Ehrlich. The 35-year-old supernatural thriller involves a university lecturer's attempts to prove he's the reincarnation of somebody who died shortly before he was born, and to solve the mystery of his murder, for which the killer was never caught. It was filmed once before: a 1975 Bing Crosby production by J Lee Thompson, starring Margot Kidder and Michael Sarrazin, and adapted by Ehrlich himself. We all know David Fincher's stellar trajectory from Alien 3 to Benjamin Button, but Walker's path has been rockier.
