Gunmen: Mario Van Peebles fondly recalls working with Christopher Lambert on underrated 90s actioner
The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.
“Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is.

Tommy “Tiny” Lister, the hulkish character actor whose pro-wrestler frame and menacing onscreen disposition highlighted the first two Friday films, Jackie Brown, The Fifth Element, and more than 200 other movies, died Thursday at the age of 62. His manager, Cindy Cowan, confirmed the actor’s death to Variety. A cause of death was not immediately known, but Cowan told Variety that he was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles apartment “after displaying symptoms of Covid-19 in recent days.” Cowan said Lister had been diagnosed with Covid-19 earlier this year.

Tommy “Tiny” Lister, who appeared in “Friday” and “The Fifth Element” and was also a professional wrestler, died Thursday, his manager Cindy Cowan confirmed.
Cowan said he was found unresponsive in his apartment in Marina del Rey, Calif. after displaying symptoms of Covid-19 in recent days. He had been working on a film and had to cancel shooting after falling ill, Cowan said.
“He was a wonderful guy with a heart of gold. Everyone loved him. A real gentle giant,” she said, “We’re all devastated.”
Lister wrestled Hulk Hogan in the World Wrestling Federation after appearing as Zeus in 1989’s “No Holds Barred.” He later spent time in World Championship Wrestling, where he was billed as Z-Gangsta.
The actor, who was blind in his right eye, played the neighborhood bully Deebo in the 1995 “Friday” and appeared in the sequel “Next Friday.”
His other appearances include playing a prisoner in “The Dark Knight,...

It was 1974, late September and October and into November. We shot Posse in Tucson, Arizona, about 12 miles from the city. It looked like the Old West — or the surface of the moon — whatever you wanted it to be. I never sat down with Kirk [who directed and co-starred] before I did the movie, never met him. But he was so courteous to me and so intrigued by the kinds of movies I’d been doing because he came out of the studio system. And what I was doing were the first of the independent movies —...

Rising star Mike Beckingham will star in “Waltzing With Brando” alongside Billy Zane, who plays a “Godfather”-era Marlon Brando in the upcoming movie.
Beckingham, younger brother of actor, writer and producer Simon Pegg, will play Bernard Judge in the comedic feature, which is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Judge was an idealistic L.A. architect selected by Brando and tasked with building the world’s first ecologically perfect retreat on a tiny Tahitian island that had been thought uninhabitable.
The picture is based upon Judge’s memoir, which recounts his relationship with Brando and his work with the enigmatic star on the designs for the would-be island getaway.
British actor Beckingham’s credits include horror pic “Redwood” and supernatural movie “Black Site.” In 2020 he will be seen in “The Host,” with Derek Jacobi and Dutch actor Maryam Hassouni, and British sci-fi film “G-Loc” alongside Stephen Moyer...

“How to Make Love to a Black Woman (Who May Be Working Through Some Sh*t),” the intriguingly-named pilot in the works at Showtime, has kicked off its casting.
Variety has learned exclusively that Tony award winner Tonya Pinkins, “New Jack City” director and veteran actor Mario Van Peebles, and newcomer Amandla Jahava have joined the cast of the Lena Waithe-produced project.
“How to Make Love to a Black Woman” is a half-hour comedy anthology series which tells stories “about connection and rejection that explore our most harrowing – and harrowingly comic – sexual secrets,” according to Showtime.
Van Peebles will play Sam, a kind stranger who connects with Rashida (Jahava), a young woman confronting an unexpected loss. Pinkins plays Rashida’s mother, Florence, who is keeping a secret from her daughter.
The project comes from Waithe’s first-look deal with Showtime which the producer, writer and actor signed last July.

Exclusive: Last seen on horseback in a period film in the 1993 film Posse, Mario Van Peebles is set to direct and star in Outlaw Posse. He wrote the script. Peebles has teamed with Emmy-winning filmmaker Kip Konwiser and Christopher Miller’s The Money Pool on the cowboy drama. The film is in preproduction and Van Peebles has begun casting leads for early next year, with Konwiser and Miller producing.
Outlaw Posse is set against the rolling hills and the lawless towns of the American wild west in the late 1800s. Van Peebles plays Chief, leader of a posse of black cowboys in search of truth & justice.
Van Peebles aims to uphold the spirit of the earlier film, in which his character led a group of black infantrymen after the Spanish-American War to find the men who lynched his father.

In honor of Mexico’s Día de Los Muertos (Aka Day of the Dead), Warner Bros. has partnered with Poster Posse artist Orlando Arocena to create a host of suitably spooky Justice League posters.
There are six in total; one for each of the founding members – namely Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) – while the other is an ensemble piece featuring the Justice League of America.
To celebrate Día de Los Muertos, each costumed crusader is rendered with skull-like face paint, and if you peer close enough, you’ll notice that Bats and Co. have a Spanish word plastered across their lips – “maravilla/wonderful” for Diana Prince; “rey/king” for Arthur Curry, etc – which is a rather fitting nod to what is undoubtedly one of the biggest festivals on the calendar.
It’s also further proof that Justice League...

As Wonder Woman continues to blow up at the box office, fans and critics alike are praising the film. I've seen it twice already and I've enjoyed the hell out of it both times. It's just such a wonderfully told story filled with themes of hope and love. Of course, it's loaded with a ton of great action as well.
To celebrate the success of the film, Poster Posse has released a collection of Wonder Woman poster art from various artists. Each one of them envisioning the film and its heroic character in different ways and styles.

This extraordinary poster caught my eye recently. It is quite unlike any American poster I have ever seen, with that beautiful ink drawing at the top (signed by one G. Contreras) dwarfed by that boldface sans-serif three-beat tagline. And no images of either of its stars. Made in 1975, Posse was Kirk Douglas’s second and final film as a director (he had previously co-directed the children’s adventure film Scalawag in 1973), the story of a politically ambitious U.S. Marshal (Douglas) who, with the help of “five of the most ruthless killers ever trained in the name of the law,” goes after a notorious bank robber (Bruce Dern) to further his career.
And as if one extraordinary Us one sheet for the film wasn’t enough, there is also this one, which in many ways is even more unusual with its Muybridge-esque still frame of figures in motion spelling out...

The star of Nebraska will attend the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala on January 4 2014 to receive the Career Achievement Award.
Dern has earned strong reviews for his lead performance in Alexander Payne’s black-and-white drama from Paramount Vantage.
His credits include They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Drive, He Said, The Great Gatsby, Coming Home, Monster, Django Unchained, On the Edge, Posse and The Driver. He earned an Oscar nomination in 1979 for Coming Home.
“Bruce Dern is truly a one of a kind performer,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner. “His skill at capturing the essence of a character, no matter how complex or unorthodox, is unique and unparalleled.
“In over 80 feature films, this talent is vividly reflected in such classic roles as the deranged pilot plotting a mass attack in Bloody Sunday, or the scarred Vietnam vet who returns home to find his wife embroiled in an affair with another man in [link...

[1] What if Walt Disney Pictures produced Pixar's Up in the 1960s as a live-action feature film? YouTube user whoiseyevan has created an amazing faux "premakes" trailer which imagines this exact possibility. Watch the video now, embedded after the jump. Here is a note from the video editor: Ah, the swinging 60s. It was a time when films were dominated by flying automobiles and flying nannies. It was also a time when live-action Disney films flourished and spawned such hits as "The Love Bug", "The Absent-Minded Professor", and "The Monkey's Uncle". In an alternate reality, this era also saw the production of the high-flying adventure-comedy, "Up!". Starring Spencer Tracy and Kirk Douglas, "Up!" followed the oddball escapades of the elderly widower, Carl Fredricksen, and his earnest band of misfits as they traveled through the wilds of South America. Produced two decades after "Saludos Amigos" and "The Three Caballeros", the film continued...

One of the highlights of the just-wrapped Santa Barbara Film Festival was a matinee screening of the underrated 1975 feature Posse, produced and directed by its star, Kirk Douglas, who agreed to appear on stage with the film’s number-one fan, Quentin Tarantino, in what festival director Roger Durling dubbed a “Q&K.” To everyone’s surprise, Douglas said, “I don’t want to talk about Posse. I want to talk about Inglourious Basterds.” And he did! He raved about Chrisoph Waltz and mentioned that his son Michael had recently met the film’s leading lady, Diane Kruger, and reported that she was even more…...
