Writer Hugo Claus based the novel on his tumultuous relationship with Kitty Courbois that lasted from 1970 to 1971.
Rijk de Gooyer was offered the lead role of Pierre, but declined. Rutger Hauer then took the part, even though he was noticeably younger than the character was portrayed in the source novel.
In the original novel, Toni, who's star sign is cancer, actually dies of cancer. This movie ignores this aspect and ends on a happier note.
