Originally, this TV movie was offered to Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner, with Wood's daughter Natasha Gregson Wagner to play Susan. However, Wood, a former child star herself, who portrayed Susan in the 1947 classic original Miracle on 34th Street (1947), declined on the grounds that Natasha was too young, and she wanted her to have as normal a childhood as possible.
Sebastian Cabot had to shave off his famous beard for this film and wear an artificial one after makeup artists were unable to whiten and fill his real beard out so that it made him look like Santa Claus.
Melissa Gilbert liked the original Miracle on 34th Street (1947), so much so that she wanted to audition for the role of Susan Walker but unfortunately lost the role to Suzanne Davidson.
David Doyle, who plays Mr. Macy in this production, had previously played the psychologist Dr/Mr Sawyer on Broadway in the musical adapted from "Miracle on 34th Street," "Here's Love."
Suzanne Davidson, who played Susan Walker in this picture, had also provided the voice of Karen in the perennial Christmas TV special "Frosty the Snowman" (1969).
