Intellectually-talkative (but terminal layabout) James Shelley and his writer girlfriend Fran are desperate to move out of their present shared accommodation into a home of their own. Their search for the perfect pad isn't easy, but circumstances conspire to lead them to the unlikely bedsit haven of sharp-tongued landlady Mrs Hawkins.

Shelley isn't impressed when his local pub is destined for a kitsch makeover. He gets yet more grief at the Labour Exchange, who seem determined to put an end to his cushy lifestyle and endless payouts. Meanwhile, Fran has some news that may make him finally want to change his layabout ways...

Following a drunken evening stint as Nelson at the Victory pub, Shelley wakes up in bed the next morning in a stranger's house - next to a strange woman! He has some serious explaining to do - not to mention waking up to the reality of finding some permanent gainful employment.

Shelley has finally completed his week doing a 'proper' job at an advertising agency, but is a bit shocked when he sees how much tax is deducted from his first pay packet. Could it be that proposing marriage to Fran will lessen his financial burdens and provide much-needed tax relief?

With their wedding looming ever closer, Fran and Shelley take the express train across country to visit Fran's father - the first time he's ever met Shelley. Will Shelley and his new father-in-law hit it off - or could it send them off the rails?

With his wedding looming, Shelley nominates his best friend Ned as his Best Man. Fran doesn't seem too impressed, what with Ned's track-record of drinking and getting involved in the odd punch-up. With Ned now hospitalized following his latest fracas, Shelley needs to ease him gently away from the idea in hope of keeping Fran sweet.

Shelley and Fran are due to throw a dinner party for their friends, and Shelley is on cooking duties. But his cullinary efforts are jeopardized by constant interruptions and unwanted callers - will he and Fran ever be left in peace?
