Intellectually-talkative (but terminal layabout) James Shelley and his writer girlfriend Fran are desperate to move out of their present shared accommodation into a home of their own. Their search for the perfect pad isn't easy, but circumstances conspire to lead them to the unlikely bedsit haven of sharp-tongued landlady Mrs Hawkins.

Shelley has finally completed his week doing a 'proper' job at an advertising agency, but is a bit shocked when he sees how much tax is deducted from his first pay packet. Could it be that proposing marriage to Fran will lessen his financial burdens and provide much-needed tax relief?

With his wedding looming, Shelley nominates his best friend Ned as his Best Man. Fran doesn't seem too impressed, what with Ned's track-record of drinking and getting involved in the odd punch-up. With Ned now hospitalized following his latest fracas, Shelley needs to ease him gently away from the idea in hope of keeping Fran sweet.
