But Raj's mother has bigger ambition for him. Raj's boss Seth Deendayal expresses his desire to get his daughter, Kamini, married to him and make him a partner. Raj's mother is jublient at the opportunity. She convinces her son to agree to the proposal. That changes life for Shanti. After Shanti's death Vijay goes in search of the man who betrayed his mom for the riches. That man is now a millionaire and owner of a very big construction company in Delhi. Vijay is still a poor guy with nothing but self-confidence and his mom's blessings. A great movie unfolds about Vijay's struggle to gain a foothold in the city and how he makes his presence known to his father. Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan present sterling performance as father and son. The battle is not only of money but also of minds. The dialogues are simply superb. Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Poonam Dillon and Sachin provide delightful support. Rakhee is very good as a level-minded intelligent secretary. One must see the movie to find out how Vijay faces all challenges thrown in by R.K. Gupta and how he reveals himself to his step-family and to his father. Although the film has five lengthy songs, the serious drama and action is not lost. Amitabh yet again reprises his role of angry young man successfully.—Nisha Jetley

- Construction manager Raj is in love with an orphan named Shanti who is a clerk in a private company. They both are very close to each other, intend to marry and even have sex. Raj puts off introducing Shanti to his mother as he is afraid of facing her. Raj used to work in Dindayal's (Manmohan Krishna) construction firm as a site supervisor. Balwant (Prem Chopra) is his colleague in the construction company & is jealous of Raj's closeness to Dindayal.
Raj is invited to a party by Dindayal at his home, where Dindayal speaks to Raj's mother about a match between his daughter Kamini (Gita Siddharth) and Raj. Dindayal reveals that he wants to give an equal partnership to Raj in his company.
Then one day, Raj brings Shanti home and declares that they want to marry each other. Raj's mother knows that Shanti will be a dutiful wife and will keep Raj happy, but she makes Raj realize that with Kamini Raj will have a chance at being someone in life and will have access to everything that he ever dreamed of. Raj's mother says that by marrying Shanti, Raj will only get responsibilities in life. Raj's mother reminds him that before his promises to Shanti, he made promises to his mother and to himself that he would become someone in life. She is adamant that Raj has to marry Kamini.
Shanti comes by to wish him success on his marriage, with the news that she is carrying his child and moving away. Raj tries to cover his guilt by offering money to Shanti, which she refuses with disdain. Shanti is clear that life offered a choice to Raj, and he made it. She gives birth to son Vijay in a different city and raises him into adulthood. Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) is the illegitimate son of a construction baron Raj Kumar Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar) and his first love Shanti (Waheeda Rehman). Shanti raises Vijay in abject poverty and teaches him to take revenge and to never be weak in life. Vijay grows up to be a blasting specialist at mines and handles dynamite without any safety equipment. Shanti had never hidden the truth from Vijay, and he knew whom to blame for their squalid life.
After Shanti dies, Vijay comes to Delhi to take revenge by destroying his father's business and family connections. Vijay starts by buying a disputed plot from Raj for Rs 5 Lakhs, which has been rendered worthless due to the possession of a goon called Madhav Singh (M. B. Shetty). To buy the plot he takes a loan from Balwant who is now a financier & still a rival of Raj. Vijay beats up Madhav Singh & gets the plot vacated by removing his illegal liquor distillery. He then proceeds to construct a residential colony on the same plot with more loans from Balwant. Vijay names his company "Shanti Constructions".
Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) and Kusum / Babli (Poonam Dhillon) are Vijay's half-siblings who are caught in the crossfire of Vijay's revenge. Shekhar has returned to India after studying MBA abroad for 2 years, while Kusum studies in college and is in love with a boy named Ravi. Shekhar joins his father's company after returning to India. After Ravi graduates from college he joins Raj's company, after giving an interview with Shekhar.
Vijay also crosses paths with Geeta (Raakhee), the devoted secretary of Raj Gupta. He also meets the general manager Sheetal (Hema Malini) (of a different company) who is also the daughter of the owner of the company PL Verma (Iftekhar). Shekhar likes Sheetal a lot and this is noticed by Vijay.
Vijay tries to bribe Geeta to reveal Raj's tender documents to him, but she refuses. So, Vijay bribes another person Bhandari (Yunus Parvez), in Raj's company to reveal those documents to him. Bhandari was being harassed by a goon named Gangu (Mohan Sherry) who was exhorting money from Bhandari as he knew that Bhandari had a mistress and would pay any amount to keep this a secret. Vijay offers to "take care" of Gangu in exchange for access to Raj's tender documents. Vijay then thrashes Gangu and tells him to keep away from Bhandari.
Raj loses out several tenders to Vijay by only Rs 1. Raj suspects an insider who is leaking information to Vijay. He knew that a few weeks ago Geeta had asked for a salary advance of Rs 3000 and suspects her. Raj sees Geeta with Vijay (Vijay was apologizing for his behavior earlier and having coffee with Geeta) & presumes that Geeta is the insider & fires her. Vijay is livid to find that Geeta was blamed for the leak and exposes Bhandari in front of Raj to clear Geeta's name.
When Geeta is fired, Vijay hires her as he needs honest and hardworking people for his growing business. Vijay's company grows rapidly & this bothers Raj. Shekhar wants to attain the business success in one year that others took 25 years to achieve. Vijay tries to create differences between Shekhar and Sheetal. Vijay also takes all the good construction deals which resulted in losses for Raj. Vijay tells Geeta the truth about his hatred for Raj.
Vijay & Raj bid together for one the biggest housing projects in Delhi. Raj bribes the commissioner using Vijay's name & the commissioner disqualifies Vijay's bid. When Vijay comes to know, he buys all the land around Raj's project & plans to build & sell flats at half the rate, bringing financial ruin to Raj. Raj is forced to mortgage his house to repay his loans, Vijay buys the deeds to the loans from the lenders without Raj knowing about it. Balwant now hates Vijay as Vijay had slapped him one day when Balwant was badmouthing Raj in front of him.
Raj pays Balwant not to sell any cement to Vijay to halt his construction. Vijay reports Balwant to the anti-corruption bureau. The police raids Balwant's warehouses & confiscates all the cement & ruins Balwant. Balwant now hates Vijay even more.
Vijay even encourages Kusum to marry Ravi (Sachin) (a clerk in Raj's company, whom she loves) against her father's wishes which enrages Shekhar, and he ends up fighting with Vijay. But Geeta comes and tells the truth to Shekhar & Kusum. Shekhar and Kusum leave Raj. Raj in anger tells Balwant (Prem Chopra) to kill Vijay. Later Vijay comes down and tells him that he is Raj's son and leaves. Raj tries to stop Balwant, but he had already left and kidnapped Ravi in order to get to Vijay. Vijay, with the assistance of Shekhar and Raj, rescues Ravi.
Balwant aims at Vijay, but Raj comes in between and thus Raj is shot in the process by Balwant. Before dying Raj asks for forgiveness. Vijay forgives him and unites with the family. In addition, Vijay changes the name of his company from Shanti Constructions to Shanti-Raj Constructions.
