All 21 episodes were written by Peter de Rosa, based upon his own experiences as a novice curate, which he had previously published in book form under the pseudonym 'Neil Boyd' (the name he also bestows on Daniel Abineri's character). The books are: "Bless Me, Father" (1977), "A Father Before Christmas" (1978), "Father in a Fix" (1979), "Father Under Fire" (1980) and "Bless Me Again, Father" (1981).
The series is set in the parish of St. Jude in 1950. Saint Jude is best known as the patron saint of lost or desperate causes.
