Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon" is a rip-roaring road movie with a lot of hijinks and heart, anchored by the incredible performances from real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. They play Moses Pray, a two-bit con artist who hoodwinks widows into purchasing Bibles, and Addie Loggins, a precocious nine-year-old with a permanent scowl who claims to be his daughter. With their streetwise charm, they unite to drive across the dusty Midwest, gradually increasing the stakes of their swindles. The sharp, black-and-white cinematography by László Kovács perfectly captures the sparse, unsentimental Depression-era America. But there's also a sweetness to "Paper Moon," especially in the development of Moses and Addie's complex and tenuous father-daughter bond. The film has a certain magic that can only come from the O'Neals' actual relationship, and it's something that makes "Paper Moon" such a joy to watch. Here are the main cast members still with us.

After a whirlwind journey to even get made, Nimona received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature on Tuesday morning, much to the delight of directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. “This movie was dead, it was not even going to exist, and now here it is, standing shoulder to shoulder with the top films of the year,” says Quane. “It’s crazy and incredible.”
Nimona was originally at Blue Sky Studios, which was dissolved after being acquired by Disney. “It’s a testament to what Nd (Stevenson) created with the graphic novel,” says Bruno. “For all those people who’ve ever felt misunderstood, it’s unapologetically LGBTQ+. At the time, Disney was unapologetically against it, but we had a whole industry pick this movie up and help carry it across the finish line.”

Mikey, Donnie, Leo, and Raph in Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’
The pizza-eating, ninja-fighting, socially awkward teenage turtles are back on the big screen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a fresh, new adventure that reboots the popular animated franchise.
The film begins by showing how the attempted arrest and collection of a mad scientist and his experimental mutant pet leads to green experimental ooze seeping down into the sewers of New York. The ooze infects four young turtles and a rat named Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan), transforming them into nearly human-size mutants who can talk and have intelligence.
Splinter adopts the young turtles and names them Michelangelo (voiced by Shamon Brown Jr.), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Leonardo (voiced by Nicolas Cantu), and Raphael (voiced by Brady Noon). The overprotective adoptive father fears humans and the outside world and keeps his turtles safe in his sewer home.

Actor Bruce Willis teamed up with Michael Bay for the ensemble hit feature Armageddon. But Willis admitted he didn’t have the best time with the director, and didn’t see the two ever collaborating afterwards.

Armageddon was one of Willis’ most successful films. The blockbuster saw the outspoken actor work with people in the film industry he’d never had before. Among them were superstars like Ben Affleck, and Billy Bob Thornton, and Liv Tyler.
It would mark the first time Willis worked alongside filmmaker Bay as well. But Willis assured that their first time together would also be their last.

Stella Stevens, who starred with Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and with Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor” as well as in disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure,” died Friday in Los Angeles. Her son, Andrew Stevens, said she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 84.
“Girls! Girls! Girls!” (1962) was one of the more generic Elvis films— there wasn’t all that much for Stevens to do — but Variety was keen on her performance in 1963’s “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” starring Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones in the story of a widower who’s romantically interested in one woman while his son wants him to marry another: “Stella Stevens comes on like gangbusters in her enactment of a brainy but inhibited doll from Montana. It’s a sizzling comedy performance of a kook.”

Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson surprised viewers with a throwback sketch to his ’90s TV show, Kenan & Kel. And when talking about his reunion with Kel Mitchell, the comedian recalled how “emotional” the moment was.
Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell revived ‘Kenan & Kel’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’
On the Dec. 3, 2022, episode of Saturday Night Live, Thompson and host Keke Palmer appeared in a sketch paying tribute to Thompson’s sitcom Kenan & Kel. Thompson portrays his old character, as Palmer plays a female version of Kel — Kelly.
The sketch begins with Palmer, as herself, on the set of SNL, telling Thompson that she loved Kenan & Kel growing up and wants to reboot it. Thompson is excited at first. But as clips from the new sitcom Kenan & Kelly are shown, Thompson begins to admit how the ill-conceived, partly dramatic, and partly cheesy show turned out to be “not good.

Busby Berkeley’s musical comedy extravaganza not only gets away with a social message, it makes one of the best cultural statements ever about the Great Depression. Social upheaval suddenly being a real thing these days, we understand. The story is a romantic backstage musical but The Wolf at the Door is present in the dialogue, the lyrics, everywhere. This might be the sexiest of Berkeley’s musicals, with even star Joan Blondell teasing the nudity; but audiences were floored when the gala curtain number ‘Remember My Forgotten Man’ shouted out a cry for social justice. Warren William, Aline MacMahon, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell & Guy Kibbee star; and this is Ned Sparks’ best role, with additional gold-digging by pert ‘n’ perky Ginger Rogers.

Chicago – The work of filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich – who passed away on January 6th, 2022, at age 82 – was inspired by the cinematic language of American movies, which he interpreted through his many classic films. His most fertile and imaginative period were three movies from 1971 through 1973, which began with his masterpiece, “The Last Picture Show.”
Bogdanovich’s personal life was also the stuff of legend, and contributed to to a less inspired creative period after 1973, but he made a major comeback with “Mask” (1985) and didn’t stop there … he directed six more narrative feature films thereafter, two documentaries and seven TV movies.

After years spent on the shelf gathering dust, The New Mutants was finally released into theaters in August, a full 28 months after it was initially scheduled to hit the big screen. And given the X-Men spinoff’s tortured production that involved extensive reshoots and countless delays, it was almost fitting that it was sent out in the middle of a pandemic when most people were keeping a wide berth from their local multiplex.
Reviews weren’t particularly kind, with some labeling it the worst entry in the entire mutant franchise, and it finished up with a box office haul of just over $45 million. However, because of the year we’re having, that’s still good enough to make The New Mutants the fifteenth highest-grossing title of 2020 so far. To put things into perspective, the fifteenth biggest hit of 2019 was Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which raked in $491 million.

Sean Hannity may not be worried about the 2020 election — if he is, he hasn’t said it on his Fox News Channel show — but his ultimate boss has indicated media investors might have some cause for concern.
The executive who has final oversight of Fox News Channel suggested Tuesday that the surge in audiences enjoyed by news networks may fall noticeably after the 2020 election — a development that could have ramifications for some of the nation’s biggest media companies.
“I would expect that as we enter a more normal news cycle, which will happen eventually, that appetite for news will shift,” said Lachlan Murdoch, executive chairman and CEO of Fox Corporation, during a Tuesday call with investors. Fox, he added, would focus on keeping its share of viewership, so that it could continue to maintain leverage in the advertising market and wield influence with its audience and newsmakers.

Coming soon after is a collection of more than a dozen Joan Blondell starrers from the pre-Code era, including Howard Hawks’ The Crowd Roars, three collaborations with Mervyn LeRoy, and Ray Enright & Busby Berkeley’s Dames.

Tyler Perry has put down deep roots in the state of Georgia, becoming the first African American to independently own his own studio — one whose acreage exceeds that of Warner Bros, Paramount and Walt Disney’s Hollywood lots combined. But Perry’s decision to put down those big, expensive roots hasn’t come without controversy — or at least questions.
Perry is notably expanding his presence in Atlanta during a period of turmoil, as Hollywood reacted to the news of Georgia’s abortion-restricting “Heartbeat Bill” with loud disdain and many in the industry proposed boycotting production in the state if the bill passed. But the writer/director/producer/actor stayed quiet on the issue until recently declaring that he would not “up and leave,” though he is personally against the proposed law. Sitting down with Variety at Tyler Perry Studios, Perry explained why he’s so steadfast in his decision to stay.

Burt Reynolds, one of the great movie stars of the ’70s and a massive sex symbol on screen, has died. Reynolds flashed his charisma and his testosterone in largely blockbusters and action films, but he always demonstrated dramatic range and energy even late into his career. Here are some of the actor’s most iconic and memorable movie and TV roles.
Gunsmoke
Reynolds hopped around TV for several years before landing a recurring part on the long-running Western “Gunsmoke.” For three years and 50 episodes he played Quint, a part Native American man who in this scene flips a guy onto a barroom table after he’s called a “dirty half-breed.”
Deliverance
In John Boorman’s classic about a group of men in a perilous fight against nature, Reynolds plays the domineering alpha male, open leather vest, crossbow and all. But the film grapples with themes of masculinity and how being...

Burt Reynolds, a top Hollywood star of the 1970s whose hits ranged from such classic, easy-going drive-in fare as Smokey and the Bandit to the intense, hunted-men drama Deliverance, died today at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. He was 82.
“It is with a broken heart that I said goodbye to my uncle today,” Reynolds’ niece Nancy Lee Hess said in a statement (read it in full below).
With a sly, knowing grin, signature moustache and a unique blend of charm and machismo, Reynolds was a bona fide cultural phenomenon. He became a frequent guest of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, was the first major celebrity nude male centerfold and off-screen romantic partner of such stars as frequent co-star Sally Field and Dinah Shore. Reyrolds would achieve a newfound respect among critics and fans alike for the late-career peak in 1997’s Boogie Nights, for which he earned his only Oscar nomination.

Burt Reynolds, one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men during the ’70s and early ’80s in such films as “Deliverance,” “Smokey and the Bandit, “The Longest Yard” and “Semi-Tough,” has died. His rep confirmed that he died Thursday in Jupiter, Fla. He was 82.
He later earned an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to skin flicks, “Boogie Nights.” He had been set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Hollywood.”
Reynolds’ appeal lay in his post-modern macho posture undercut by a wry self-awareness, which he used to good effect in comedies as well as action films. For a period during the ’70s he was the nation’s top box office draw. But after one too many bad movies, his popularity waned. He returned to television, where he’d gotten his start, mostly in Westerns, and produced his own sitcom, “Evening Shade,” which brought him an Emmy.

The year 1990 was the beginning of a new decade that just had survived the neon excesses of the ’80s. Martin Scorcese's powerful religious film, following the Catholic church's mission to instill Christianity in Fuedal Japan, Silence is coming out this March! Come inside to find out how you can get your hands on it early.
One of the biggest snubs of this year's Academy Awards, Silence, is making its way to digital and blu-ray, merely 3 months after being on the big screen. The Martin Scorsese religious feature, starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson will arrive on Blu-Ray on March 28th, but for audiences who can't wait that long the Digital HD version will be available March 14th.
Understandably, there aren't many added features for the Blu-Ray/Digital copy of Silence. If you haven't seen the movie, there really isn't much of a need for an alternate ending, deleted scenes, bloopers, or anything of the sort. Instead, the only new content will stem from a...

Chicago – If Peter Bogdanovich had only been a film writer and critic, he still would have made a major contribution to cinema culture. But he also chose to direct, and besides producing arguably one of the best American films ever made (“The Last Picture Show”), he continues to work and fulfill his creative vision.
Bogdanovich was honored at the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival with a Gold Hugo Career Lifetime Achievement designation, which was augmented with a magnificent documentary about a period in his career called “One Day Since Yesterday: Peter Bogdanovich and the Lost American Film.” The film tells the story of “They All Laughed” (1981), a post modern screwball comedy starring Audrey Hepburn, John Ritter and Dorothy Stratten. Bogdanovich was in a relationship with Stratten during the production of the film, and she was murdered by her ex-husband while the film was being edited. The tragedy, the prescience of...

At the time of its production, Louis Malle’s 1978 title Pretty Baby (the title derived from the Tony Jackson song) was quite the scandal, a period piece frankly depicting child prostitution in turn of the century New Orleans. But like many provocative titles from the period (another being Richard Brooks’ Looking For Mr. Goodbar), decades of suppression has resulted in unavailability and a disappearance from modern cinematic conversations. Recently made available courtesy of the Warner Bros. Archive collection (solely on DVD) this is property begging for a more masterful restoration.
In the Red Lights district of 1917 New Orleans, legal prostitution is on the wane as a surge of conservative, religious rhetoric begins to sweep through the country. Nell (Francis Faye) owns a booming brothel in the famed Storyville district, and one of her most notable employees is Hattie (Susan Sarandon), whose twelve-year-old daughter Violet (Brooke Shields) has grown up within the house.

The biggest remaining treasure trove in the world of cinema is the long lost and destroyed ending to Orson Welles‘ The Magnificent Ambersons, his cynical director’s cut that he felt would’ve made it an even greater film than Citizen Kane. But anything having remotely to do with Welles may be just as great of a find.
In 2015, Royal Road Entertainment will release Welles’s last film The Other Side of the Wind in accordance with Welles’s 100th birthday. The New York Times reported Wednesday how Welles spent the last 15 years of his life shooting and editing the picture, a meta story about an aging, legendary director played by John Huston. The cast includes Lilli Palmer, Dennis Hopper, Susan Strasberg and Peter Bogdanovich playing an up-and-coming film director, who at the time was essentially playing himself.

Nickelodeon gets no love. And yet its place in the popular, Biskind-approved narrative of The Decline and Fall of Everyone in the 1970s New Hollywood is a bit uncertain. It comes after the despised At Long Last Love (1975), which ought to mark the same point in Peter Bogdanovich's career as Sorcerer for Friedkin, Heaven's Gate for Cimino and especially One from the Heart for Coppola. True, critics didn't go for it, except in the sense of savaging it, and the public didn't go to it, in any sense, but it certainly didn't attract the tsunami of opprobrium that P-Bog's Cole Porter musical, sung live, brought down upon the heads of the director and his entire cast.
Like his musical, his comedy about early Hollywood (it climaxes with the premiere of Birth of a Nation) now exists in two versions, as Bogdanovich revisited the film, inserting a few deleted moments...

A melancholy history of Hollywood recounted in terms of the offspring of its greatest personalities would reveal a litany of also-rans, failures and addicts. Harry Carey Jr was one of the happy exceptions to that rule. His father was John Ford's favourite actor; the director dedicated his 1948 film Three Godfathers to "the memory of Harry Carey – bright star of the early western sky". Ford's The Searchers (1956) ended with John Wayne standing, one arm across his chest, in a pose made famous by Carey Sr.
Carey Jr worked prolifically with Andrew V McLaglen, the son of Victor McLaglen, another of Ford's stock company. For that director he made many episodes of TV westerns and roughly a dozen films, often starring Wayne and James Stewart, including The Rare Breed (1966), Bandolero! (1968), Something Big (1971) and Cahill (1973).
Carey was sought out by American directors who recalled the golden era of their national cinema and his part in it.

The folks at JEFusion.com shared footage from this year’s Power Morphicon of Saban Entertainment’s promo reel for next year’s Power Rangers series. Their seventeenth series, Power Rangers Megaforce, will be based on the thirty-fourth of Toei Company’s Super Sentai series, Tensou Sentai Goseiger.
Starting with the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in 1993, based on Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, Saban has been producing series using costumes, props and action footage from the Japanese originals. The series have remained a perennial hit in the States, as the original series has done in Japan for the past thirty-six years.
It’s not the first time the name has appeared in entertainment either. One of the original sentai series had “mega” in the title; Denji Sentai Megaranger, which was used to create 1998′s Power Rangers in Space. Action film fans may remember the Hal Needham directed MegaForce, starring Barry Bostwick and Persis Khambatta.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

The big showdown from the Mar. 12 Raw, live in Cleveland, Ohio is a musical battle between John Cena and the Rock.
We're two weeks away from "WrestleMania 28" on Sun., April 1. Live from the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida, headliners Cena -- the face of World Wrestling Entertainment -- will be squaring off against wrestler-turned-movie star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at the Super Bowl of wrestling.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, onto this week's showdown:
Opening Segment: John Cena's Battle Rap
Watch On WWE Fan Nation
Cena comes out in full "Doctor of Thuganomics" gear, complete with Cavaliers jersey. Despite the local sports team pandering and wrestling fans' love of nostalgia, Cena is met with a divisive crowd. He lays down some pretty vulgar rhymes, including wanting to give Rock a Cleveland steamer. Cleveland, uh, appreciates(?) the shout-out.
When John Cena used to do this Mark Wahlberg...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

30 Rock, Season 6, Episode 2, “Idiots are People Two!”
Written by Robert Carlock
Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Tonight on 30 Rock an attempt is made to deal with Tracy Morgan’s homophobic outburst this summer, and I’m not sure they wouldn’t have been better off leaving it alone. It’s not that the show isn’t capable of handling touchy political issues, last season’s “Tgs Hates Women” was one of the best episodes of the show’s run. It dealt with the perceived misogyny inherent in modern comedy (even more of an issue today with David Letterman’s talent booker being fired this week for claiming female comedians aren’t as funny as men), the Olivia Munn/Jezebel spat and female gross out comics like Sarah Silverman with a measure of insight and more importantly a level of humor that is completely absent from tonight’s episode.

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...

Self-taught costume designer who dressed Beatty and Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde
Theadora Van Runkle was almost 40 and broke, a commercial illustrator drawing fashion ads for the May Department Stores Company to support her children, when she met the movie costume designer Dorothy Jeakins at a party in Los Angeles in 1966. Jeakins had been in the business a long time by then (from Joan of Arc to The Sound of Music), but she was no sketch artist, and she hired Van Runkle on the spot to do that task for the glum epic Hawaii. The engagement lasted barely a month. As payback, Jeakins later called to say: "I've just been asked to do a little western over at Warner Bros" – she couldn't do it because of conflicting schedules – "and I recommended you."
Van Runkle, who has died of lung cancer aged 83, panicked. She had no design training, but she had...

Labor Day is all about talking a day off to relax and celebrate the unofficial end of summer. But for TV viewers, there may be no rest for your remote. TVLine has labored (sorry) to compile a cheat sheet of the many offerings this holiday weekend. Cloo (fka Sleuth) might take the cake with four marathons over three days, but Monday presents a Sophie’s Choice of options from old (The Golden Girls) to cult (Buffy) to new (Wilfred). Scan the list and tell us what you’ll be watching.
