The show takes place at the fictional Walt Whitman High School. The old building at Los Angeles High School, which was used for the exterior of Walt Whitman High, collapsed in the 1971 earthquake.
The first six episodes of the first season included a laugh track. However, starting with episode #1.7 (Teacher's Dropping Out (1969)), the laugh track was gone to help emphasize that the show was a drama, rather than a comedy.
The exterior campus shots were all filmed at University High School (Uni) in Los Angeles. Los Angeles High School was only used as the front of the school.
This was the first of three long-running sitcom franchises created or developed by James L. Brooks that are currently the property of 20th Television, formerly 20th Century Fox Television. The next two were "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", initially a production of MTM Enterprises which TCF TV acquired in the 1990s, and "The Simpsons", widely regarded as the most popular of the three. Brooks was involved in other shows for MTM and TCF TV during his career, but none were as popular as "Room 222", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", or "The Simpsons".
Room 222 ran for 5 seasons . During its entire run Mr Dixon the American History teacher had at least the same two students: Jason and Bernie.
